    One tip I recommend is to do the install relatively quickly, especially on newer cars. The longer the battery is completely disconnected, the more likely it is that some systems in the car will need to recalibrate etc. Better yet, leave the battery mostly connected and wire off a different source. Only speaking from experience :)

    Always disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive.
    The entire car should be isolated from the negative terminal.
    Then you should connect your charge lead + to the positive terminal, your charge lead - to a chassis ground. Then reconnect your negative battery terminal (thus completing the circuit for all of the chassis grounded items).
    The idea is to just have the single negative cable that is effectively connected to every other negative in the system.. That way you don't have a risk of something accidentally grounding when you don't want it to.

    I've found that even though the battery itself may be buried (My Grand Cherokee has it under the seat and my e90 has it in the trunk) there is almost always a terminal somewhere in case you need to jump start the the car. Hook the positive to that and then find some bare metal to ground to. Connecting directly to the battery works but there is a VERY small chance you could have a fire or explosion from the spark if your battery is venting out gasses.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Car batteries are not made for deep discharge. If you monitor the voltage, you don't want to see it go below maybe 11.75 volts. You can only charge maybe 4-5 packs before you're done, unless you have like a gigantic truck battery or something. I almost always idle my engine when charging.

    • @DoctorWhom
      @DoctorWhom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshuaBardwell You should mention the capacity and the cell count.
      But monitoring what the particular battery is capable of doing is very important. Just because Bardwells car will do 4-5 packs doesn't mean your battery will. And as the battery ages, that number will go down as well. Kind of a good way to know that your car will need a new battery soon, It's better to notice a 0 pack field charge day rather than have the battery totally die on you the next week.

    Most all cars since about 2005 are metric. American cars started the transition in about 2000. The dealer will have an OEM terminal, or you can go to any auto parts store and get a replacement. Since you should never parallel charge in your car, you really shouldn't need to be more than about 10A (in most cases). So unless the car is Very old, the lighter outlet should be able to carry the load. That being said you should be charging outside the car. I have a lighter lead I made with 12awg wire that is just long enough to reach out of the car. I would also recommend against charging packs back to back without any time for the system to cool a bit.

      @JoshuaBardwell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The dealer only sells the terminal with the cable pre-crimped = $300. I ended up buying a spare terminal of the same type, then file off the threads where they were crimped down so I could remove the nut without damaging it. Then reinstall it on the car.

    Josh probably best to tap after the SBF (slow burn fuse) its the highest rating amp average of 100A. Any short would pop it, equivalent is jump starting ur car with reversed jumper cables. Ground wire to the charger u can attach to any bare metal on the cars chassis aka make your own ground. It's kinda like wiring a car amplifier but using a already built in fuse.

    Nowadays I'm curious about battery charging on field from electric vehicle. Seen one of them (Leaf probably) having 12V port for more powerful load. But others doesn't.
    Also direct connection to 12V car battery may not work with some LiPo chargers. There was reports about chargers shutting down when car battery voltage sag to 11.9V. 12V to 24V converter for 300/400W load can help here.

    Howdy. I do up fitting on police and fire trucks and I see people attach wires to those battery clamps often. I would suggest not attaching your wires to them because they were never meant to conduct electricity and will fail to do so consistently.

    Auto tech here, everything on basically every car is metric, this is absolutely a good thing otherwise I'd need twice as many tools.
    A lot of luxury cars have the battery hidden somewhere else like under a seat or in the trunk, so if you don't see it under the hood it might be somewhere else.

  • @RobertMehrer
    @RobertMehrer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Depending on your car/suv/truck you may not need to do this. If you have an inverter in the car for 110/120 you more than likely have the correct wiring installed. My Grand Cherokee has 12v 13amp accessory ports in the rear cargo area as well as 110/120 plugs. I run a 10awg lead from the acc port to my table in the rear. A lot of cars now have the batteries inside the cabin, mine sites under the Passenger seat and is not accessible for wiring like this. Keep that in mind!

    I use a 150W inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter, then plug my HOTA D6 into the inverter. The combined cable length of the inverter and HOTA charger is enough to set the charger outside of the car.
    I only use this for backup, or I leave the engine running, as to not kill the car battery.

    Permanent charging lead is the best way for real. I have one routing into my glove box where it connects to 4 xt60s in parallel. I've also wired in a 100amp fuse for car audio. Gotta say tho if you want to do it right get a car audio wiring kit and use the parts from it. It also features a new positive clamp in many cases. Cables should be 8 awg or more then.

    Your car 12v output has the max amps listed in the handbook. Anyone not wishing to dick around should just limit the charger input amps to this value and use a 12v car adaptor that has a cable rated for this amperage. I agree charge outside the car and don't have an excessively long cable.
