Considering that Gmod is made with Half Life assets, I think it's safe to assume you won't be sued for using Facepunch's own assets in their own game. You also don't need to worry about being sued for copying the gameplay of another game, almost every game in existence does that.

The S&box is an interesting case. The tools seem really great and the possibilities are endless, but the life of this game depends on building a large, loving and active community. I really want this game to be a great success because it's sad to look at those dying Gmod servers you have been playing on for years, but it's hard for me to imagine the community of this game. People who play Roblox won't go to the S&box because they aren't going to pay for a game that propably isn't going to run on their pc, and people who play Gmod just want to play with HL assets and stick together thousands of addons. Times have changed and I don't know if S&box has a chance to conquer the market. Time will tell. Personally, I like what's shown so far and have even considered creating maps for this game.

I love where Facepunch is attempting to go with S&Box, but I agree with you that there needs to be some major changes and major progress that needs to be made in order to make the game playable for everyone. I could see S&Box releasing in late 2022 or early 2023, and in all honesty, I wouldn't even be disappointed with that kind of release date. With the current state of the game, I believe that it's necessary to have a later release date rather than push the game out quickly and have it flop. After all, Facepunch has a really great track record with Rust, Gmod, etc. I would hate to see a game with so much potential disappear forever.
The one thing I really liked about Garry's Mod is the fact that you just download all the mods you want and make a giant amalgamation of features and items to suit what you want in your game, but as amazing as S&Box looks, it seems more like just Roblox but better as opposed to the ultimate sandbox
yeah Garry has his head far up his own ass and is hellbent on making Roblox 2 instead of what people truly want, and he’s also pretty much declared war on porting and using copyrighted stuff, which is weird considering he also said something along the lines of "I don't mind if you want to port stuff, I only care if Valve or other companies get mad". The whole game mode system itself is messy as fuck and I really hope he reconsiders. It’s insane that you’d need to modify the gamemode itself to add server-specific content instead of just being able to install an addon (which I heard are going to be sandbox only or something like that) and that’s it

Also the fact that they don't want to include Valve assets because they'd have to give Valve 10% more. This is going to lead to a bunch of maps having clashing assets from random websites, that aren't even set up properly. Look at all the random free Unity projects that pop up from time to time. They always have incorrectly set up textures that end up looking like plastic instead of the intended material, textures that don't look realistic, or textures that are way too different and clash tremendously. Having a set of assets made by the same AAA studio really helped make most maps look good in Garry's Mod, although i'd say the thing that contributed the most was the engine just being old. Garry's Mod didn't really support PBR textures so all you had was albedo and maybe a normal map, that's it. It's much harder to fuck up that way. You can already see it in the stuff posted in the official discord servers, in #waywo. Most of it just looks like generic unity projects. No personality or soul at all. The only good gamemode I've seen is a shitpost one where you're a melon flying around and that's it lol.

Honestly I just don't like the way this is looking. I was only interested in S&box because I assumed it would just be Garry's Mod with better performance and graphics. This just looks like a mix between Roblox and Dreams that doesn't really do anything to make people from those communities want to switch over. But hey, who knows, maybe some more appealing playermodels and dedicated servers will appear later to get the Gmod community in. No way they are capturing the Roblox audience though, having to download and compile everything is simply too inconvenient compared to Roblox where you just find what you want from their webpage and it loads in seconds.
The special thing is that you are not limited by a 20 year old engine that is source 1, now posibilities are so much larger, less hard, accesible, and with proper vr support.
What I keep hearing from those who have S&box is "Its not gmod 2" This makes no sense to me, People shouldn't expect a game to replace Roblox or get rid of the crappy stuff from gmod. The bad assets and gamemodes are what kept gmod alive because that made it form a community. And saying that its not gmod 2 just makes it fit in with every other modern game. There is no other game like gmod and I don't understand why S&box is trying to be something its not.
They don’t want DarkRP 2 to be the top gamemode again, its funny how much Garry and FP hate DarkRP. Its almost like they are creating this game as a reaction to the DarkRP community. The funny part is no matter what “new and original” gamemodes FP creates, DarkRP 2 is going to be the thing that gives this game traction and blows it up.

That’s the current issue I’m worried about, nothing has even been mentioned about a platform for devs to make things / monetize, it’s no different then gmod when it comes to making money from the platform, I’m hoping they create a proper environment for developers to come in instead of just an engine with nice tools. S&box would develop much faster if more people had the desire to come in.

I'm excited for the game(mostly for that sexy source 2 engine like damn) I think it won't be release for another few years or more since as of this now the game to me seems so barebones especially the single player aspect since this is coming from my time playing garrys mod when I would prefer to play it on singleplayer, and barely on multiplayer, I know that S&Box is not gmod but rather it's own thing which I am really excited for it. I really like the part where you said it could start a new wave of games or possible genres that I am so so so really looking forward too!!! like whoooa there are soooooo many awesome possibilities. One thing I'm worried of is the quality of the gamemodes, I feel like once the game comes out there will be tons of low effort games that nobody put any heart into them but rather as a joke. These lowest common denominators will be so much that the developers who actual put effort into their games will be buried thus those makers wont get any exposure to their work which sucks. While I do have a few concerns about some parts of the game I'm optimistic that the game will do well once it's been fully polished and ready to be release to the public! Gmod is a thing where you can make any mod, take any assets from any game, and have them all in a sandbox. I bet it is completely possible to just have identical replicas of any game but in this game.
By the looks of it, this is too broken/unstable to be used as a proper tool to make actual games, and too complex to be considered a GMod sequel. My guess is that it will take at least 2+ years before its even worth getting into.

I think the moderation part will solve itself (like Roblox). If game modes are sorted by popularity, only good games will be at the top. Though, when a game mode is uploaded, there should be an automated system to check if it can even compile, if not. The uploader should be told the game doesn't work (probably are more detailed message than that).

at 0:16 you mentioned there's glimpses of updates from 2018, but they went back even further. I've been following this project on and off since around 2018 and there was some work being done all the way back in 2017 (you can see these on the wayback machine). I think on garry's blog he's been talking about wanting to do this since the early-mid 2010s.
i don't think fp understood what made gmod so special. it wasn't because you could "do anything" it was because you hop on a server to play your favorite game mode, and you know half the players there. servers were little communities, which made the experience of doing wacky shit so much better. sandbox/roblox's "gamemode" system means unless youre lobbying up intentionally, you'll be stuck playing with random people everytime. there won't be as much community to it
Imagine you build a world, and you want a mini golf course, so you take it from the golf course game and drop it into your world. So essentially you can take entities from other games and place them in your own. So you could make your own world made of multiple different games. Or just make your own entirely. to be quite honest. i think the key here is monetization. if developers can make money off of their games, we will definitely begin to see extremely complex games made by professional game developers. then again i dont known shit about game development
Monetization is a double edged sword. The plus is that it lets developers make money which allows for more complex games. The negative is that it incentivizes favoring design elements that generate revenue over elements that provide a better player experience. You also have the risk that the platform itself will begin favoring monetization, making the most profitable games more visible while hiding the others. This problem is best demonstrated with what has happened to Roblox after they implemented their developer exchange
I think monetization sounds good, but generally it stifles creativity and community sharing and communication in a platform like this. It's just not worth the couple hundred $ per person to tank a community. That's the beauty of passion projects -- they're made to be beautiful and fun, and that almost always attracts more people (and if everything is free, the pressure is to keep contributing new and interesting and valuable things!) Just my 2c and personal experience, I work in a field that may not really exist at all if it was heavily monetized like other fields are these days. :')/:'(

The fact that You can recreate conway's Game of life is astounding. I do think this will be a really good tool for modders and gamedevelopers as a whole, but yeah, it needs a lot of polishing and develop a toolset robusto enough to virtually make anything. Just give us an almosto completely Open API to build upon with C# and the capability to import custom models, animations, textures, sounds and fonts and this would be priceless. I have a lot of faith in this, it doesn't seem good for players, but oh boy for creators this seems like taking a very good path
I'm sorta worried about the new system. In Gmod you could make your own gamemodes by slapping together a bunch of mods and it worked incredibly well, but in this case you pretty much have to have a team or do everything yourself to make an good gamemode. I really hope they also make more assets for the game. Having so many assets from Half Life made Gmod far easier to work with, and it served as great base for developers. Oh well I'm still hopeful for S&box, I think we need an alternative to Gmod and Roblox, both of which are pretty outdated by today's standards.
If people freely share assets, then surely the game will rocket. Just like how PHX, tiles and Wiremod (especially E2) literally changed the game. I sincerely hope that this will happen to S&box too!
Facepunch is currently hiring artists to make assets so don't worry! I think the new system is gonna be a big improvement, they are still gonna add addons for gamemodes but the way I think it will work is that a gamemode can choose whether or not they want addons or something like that. And when games have to rely on a proper implementation of content rather than slapping a bunch of addons together it's gonna be good for quality control and performance.
I like to think of it as a sort of Team Fortress and quake mod type beat, where it’s just a really good base to work off. Good ideas have the potential to become a really good game in s&box and would have potential to become their own games outside of s&box.

S&box had a que system and people are still waiting in that que to get private access however… As of a month or so ago the Que has been paused/closed so there are still people in the que waiting that have not realised it’s currently closed. No one knows when the que will re open but I’d guess somewhere in 2023 but again that’s just a guess.

Ok, i watched a vid by bluedrake 1 year ago and was like "nice gmod 2" now with this its like shit....... this is like if you took dreams ps4/ps5 and shot it full of roids, made it run on PC and overhauled everything. If this blows up just as much as gmod, i truely believe that s&box would take over a lot of games, so in turn aaa dev studios would need to change the way they look at game development.

Make sure to credit TheParryGod for the video clips you used near the end. I'm lukewarm about this game so far. I hope that it still has some features that are recognizable from gmod, as well as plenty of half life assets either built in (which probably won't be the case) or modded in. Time will tell, and there is still a long way to go
I think you fundamentally misunderstand the appeal of roblox for developers. as a platform, roblox has a readily available audience of players dying to play something fresh, and the engine itself is lightweight enough that it can run on phones without a hitch. s&ndbox is likely going to remain pc exclusive given its asset fidelity, and there isn't a promising monetization incentive to keep developers on the platform outside of hobbyist work.
will s&box allow people to add custom player models and weapons because given that the game has built in vr support and also works for desktop players I see this as a potential vr chat killer in the sense of RP communities especially half life
Super Monkey Ball is owned by Sega, not Nintendo, and Sega is usually a lot cooler with their fan communities. Tower Unite has a game mode like that too.

S&Box could take over FiveM but everybody in FP has PTSD from DarkRP including Gary.

Honestly I just don't like the way this is looking. I was only interested in S&box because I assumed it would just be Garry's Mod with better performance and graphics. This just looks like a mix between Roblox and Dreams that doesn't really do anything to make people from those communities want to switch over. But hey, who knows, maybe some more appealing playermodels and dedicated servers will appear later to get the Gmod community in. No way they are capturing the Roblox audience though, having to download and compile everything is simply too inconvenient compared to Roblox where you just find what you want from their webpage and it loads in seconds.
The special thing is that you are not limited by a 20 year old engine that is source 1, now posibilities are so much larger, less hard, accesible, and with proper vr support.

What I keep hearing from those who have S&box is "Its not gmod 2" This makes no sense to me, People shouldn't expect a game to replace Roblox or get rid of the crappy stuff from gmod. The bad assets and gamemodes are what kept gmod alive because that made it form a community. And saying that its not gmod 2 just makes it fit in with every other modern game. There is no other game like gmod and I don't understand why S&box is trying to be something its not.
It's pretty much gmod 2 though, it's gonna have everything gmod has and more.

They don’t want DarkRP 2 to be the top gamemode again, its funny how much Garry and FP hate DarkRP. Its almost like they are creating this game as a reaction to the DarkRP community. The funny part is no matter what “new and original” gamemodes FP creates, DarkRP 2 is going to be the thing that gives this game traction and blows it up.

What you see as bad is seen completely differently by the Gmod community. The free and whimsical nature of Gmod is what makes it good. It's something too difficult or impossible to do on other platforms. People are disappointed that this isn't a successor to Gmod because that's what everyone wanted

Please remember that all these games are still being developed. For the developers who didn’t get their game shown it’s because it simply didn’t compile. This is not a reflection of your game mode but more on the state of s&box. When gamemodes are ready they will be shown in a different kind of video. A better kind

That’s the current issue I’m worried about, nothing has even been mentioned about a platform for devs to make things / monetize, it’s no different then gmod when it comes to making money from the platform, I’m hoping they create a proper environment for developers to come in instead of just an engine with nice tools. S&box would develop much faster if more people had the desire to come in.

Good analysis! I'm excited for the game(mostly for that sexy source 2 engine like damn) I think it won't be release for another few years or more since as of this now the game to me seems so barebones especially the single player aspect since this is coming from my time playing garrys mod when I would prefer to play it on singleplayer, and barely on multiplayer, I know that S&Box is not gmod but rather it's own thing which I am really excited for it.
I really like the part where you said it could start a new wave of games or possible genres that I am so so so really looking forward too!!! like whoooa there are soooooo many awesome possibilities. One thing I'm worried of is the quality of the gamemodes, I feel like once the game comes out there will be tons of low effort games that nobody put any heart into them but rather as a joke. These lowest common denominators will be so much that the developers who actual put effort into their games will be buried thus those makers wont get any exposure to their work which sucks.
While I do have a few concerns about some parts of the game I'm optimistic that the game will do well once it's been fully polished and ready to be release to the public!

I can't believe I never thought of this. And I can't believe how like, seriously dumb I was to to assume they would use the original source engine. God i'm dumb. Gmod is a thing where you can make any mod, take any assets from any game, and have them all in a sandbox. I bet it is completely possible to just have identical replicas of any game but in this game.
If there is tool gun, better characters customisation(not this odd looking things) and if moders gonna make something cool after relase.
By the looks of it, this is too broken/unstable to be used as a proper tool to make actual games, and too complex to be considered a GMod sequel. My guess is that it will take at least 2+ years before its even worth getting into.

I think the moderation part will solve itself (like Roblox). If game modes are sorted by popularity, only good games will be at the top. Though, when a game mode is uploaded, there should be an automated system to check if it can even compile, if not. The uploader should be told the game doesn't work (probably are more detailed message than that).

at 0:16 you mentioned there's glimpses of updates from 2018, but they went back even further. I've been following this project on and off since around 2018 and there was some work being done all the way back in 2017 (you can see these on the wayback machine). I think on garry's blog he's been talking about wanting to do this since the early-mid 2010s.

i don't think fp understood what made gmod so special. it wasn't because you could "do anything" it was because you hop on a server to play your favorite game mode, and you know half the players there. servers were little communities, which made the experience of doing wacky shit so much better. sandbox/roblox's "gamemode" system means unless youre lobbying up intentionally, you'll be stuck playing with random people everytime. there won't be as much community to it

Imagine you build a world, and you want a mini golf course, so you take it from the golf course game and drop it into your world. So essentially you can take entities from other games and place them in your own. So you could make your own world made of multiple different games. Or just make your own entirely. to be quite honest. i think the key here is monetization. if developers can make money off of their games, we will definitely begin to see extremely complex games made by professional game developers. then again i dont known shit about game development
Monetization is a double edged sword. The plus is that it lets developers make money which allows for more complex games. The negative is that it incentivizes favoring design elements that generate revenue over elements that provide a better player experience. You also have the risk that the platform itself will begin favoring monetization, making the most profitable games more visible while hiding the others. This problem is best demonstrated with what has happened to Roblox after they implemented their developer exchange
I think monetization sounds good, but generally it stifles creativity and community sharing and communication in a platform like this. It's just not worth the couple hundred $ per person to tank a community. That's the beauty of passion projects -- they're made to be beautiful and fun, and that almost always attracts more people (and if everything is free, the pressure is to keep contributing new and interesting and valuable things!)
Just my 2c and personal experience, I work in a field that may not really exist at all if it was heavily monetized like other fields are these days. :')/:'(

In the past 14 days of making this video some games just didn’t load, horde was 1 of them
It worked 1 week ago and I saw all the cool added stuff like the grenade they run to with sound ect
But then when I went to film days later it didn’t work, I’m guessing now it does work but this wasn’t a “ playing every game andcritique”
This was “ playing all functional games so far” so ones that loaded and are obviously in development

The fact that You can recreate conway's Game of life is astounding. I do think this will be a really good tool for modders and gamedevelopers as a whole, but yeah, it needs a lot of polishing and develop a toolset robusto enough to virtually make anything. Just give us an almosto completely Open API to build upon with C# and the capability to import custom models, animations, textures, sounds and fonts and this would be priceless.
I have a lot of faith in this, it doesn't seem good for players, but oh boy for creators this seems like taking a very good path

It would be better if you learned S2 Hammer using HL:A or SteamVR since the mapping workflow in S1 Hammer is way different from S2's mapping workflow

I'm sorta worried about the new system. In Gmod you could make your own gamemodes by slapping together a bunch of mods and it worked incredibly well, but in this case you pretty much have to have a team or do everything yourself to make an good gamemode.
I really hope they also make more assets for the game. Having so many assets from Half Life made Gmod far easier to work with, and it served as great base for developers. Oh well I'm still hopeful for S&box, I think we need an alternative to Gmod and Roblox, both of which are pretty outdated by today's standards.
If people freely share assets, then surely the game will rocket. Just like how PHX, tiles and Wiremod (especially E2) literally changed the game. I sincerely hope that this will happen to S&box too!

I think the new system is gonna be a big improvement, they are still gonna add addons for gamemodes but the way I think it will work is that a gamemode can choose whether or not they want addons or something like that.
And when games have to rely on a proper implementation of content rather than slapping a bunch of addons together it's gonna be good for quality control and performance.
I like to think of it as a sort of Team Fortress and quake mod type beat, where it’s just a really good base to work off. Good ideas have the potential to become a really good game in s&box and would have potential to become their own games outside of s&box.
This could even be like the old steam green light days as well.

the super monkey ball game existed since the Gmod Tower days and never got taken down. Tower Unite has an exact gamemode like this.

S&box had a que system and people are still waiting in that que to get private access however…
As of a month or so ago the Que has been paused/closed so there are still people in the que waiting that have not realised it’s currently closed.
No one knows when the que will re open but I’d guess somewhere in 2023 but again that’s just a guess.

Ok, i watched a vid by bluedrake 1 year ago and was like "nice gmod 2" now with this its like shit....... this is like if you took dreams ps4/ps5 and shot it full of roids, made it run on PC and overhauled everything. If this blows up just as much as gmod, i truely believe that s&box would take over a lot of games, so in turn aaa dev studios would need to change the way they look at game development.

Make sure to credit TheParryGod for the video clips you used near the end. I'm lukewarm about this game so far. I hope that it still has some features that are recognizable from gmod, as well as plenty of half life assets either built in (which probably won't be the case) or modded in. Time will tell, and there is still a long way to go

I think you fundamentally misunderstand the appeal of roblox for developers. as a platform, roblox has a readily available audience of players dying to play something fresh, and the engine itself is lightweight enough that it can run on phones without a hitch. s&ndbox is likely going to remain pc exclusive given its asset fidelity, and there isn't a promising monetization incentive to keep developers on the platform outside of hobbyist work.
Your right, I don't think s&box will ever be able to leave pc, and if they did it would probably be a decade away.
