Hey animation graduate here! What you’re talking about in most of your video, the ‘popping thing’ is an actual and important technique called overshoot! For anyone who wants to dig further into it, check out the 12 principles of animation, anticipation and overshoot is one of them :)
Totally agree! I was thinking about commenting on it too, since it’s kind of overlooked in animation tutorials. It’s super helpful, and really makes the animation look realistic/fluid
A yes, an even 100 likes. But seriously thanks for the info. I don't animate, I rarely even draw but I love learning about art techniques of different kinds. Its super interesting.
@strawberrys0da714 thanks for the recommendation I've been trying to find something to teach me more about animation since being a character animator is my dream job.
Animation major graduate here! Most animators are taught to do inbetweens with poses, but you can have multiple end points, so you wouldn’t just mark the starting and ending pose, you’d also mark the very middle pose. Then you do the inbetween frames. :) but the second method is also super cute!! I’d add like one transition frame in between poses just to make it a little more seamless, but that’s my own take:) both methods are good when you need them
Personally, I think most of this is an example of ease in and out. You add more frames at the beginning and the end of the animation wich will make the animation seem really smooth with little effort.
The "before" blink could still be useful for certain scenes - a slow, deliberate blink while she's processing something, say. You know, "Um--" s l o w blink "--what are you TALKING about?" Or to emphasize that a character is really zoned out - like another character asks, "What do you think?" and they blink like that. Man, though, the "after" blink looks really cool.
Animation student here. These tips are really good! Some of them did actually help me out. I do want to mention that for the full body movement, the first example could work if you simply put one extra frame where the character goes past the key frames then returns to them. Now in technical terms this may sound confusing, but for example, let's say your moving your arm to the right. Before you ever move your arm to right, you move it slightly to the left first, and vice versa. The more power you need for a movement, like, per se, pitching a baseball, the more you'll move that arm in the opposite direction beforehand before actually pitching it. This is called anticipation and is one of the fundamental principles of animation that they teach in school. Basically if you added some anticipation on the first example of the full body movement, it legitimately could work just fine along with some other minor tweaks.
@@LavenderTowne sorry for intruding. I don't know if you would read this but please, please, make a video analysing the toxic ml Sahed of the webtoon of Marionetta!! I suffer from PTSD and I find utterly disgusting how the author Miriam Bonastre has been washing genre based violence called now "flirting", just because the toxic guy is so hot!! He has been manipulating the fl, pushing to murdering, to commict crimes without explaining why, saying "this all for your best", intimidating her even stabbing her with a knife, and now Miriam has called all that behaviour "flirting". It is so hideous. He hasn't even apologised. People claim his behaviour was "for the greater good and the sake of his people", but tell me how this affect the freedom of his people?? It has nothing to do. Please, denounce the situation, it is so crazy. 🥲🥲🥲 Their fans even called me frigid for saying I don't like how the toxicity of his behaviour is ignored.
I’m an a beginner animator myself, the saying words out loud to study the way the mouth works when you pronounce them as you animate is such a real one, also great video as always! 😊
Quick tip for lipsyncing! There is no need to try and sound out all of the words and match the voice posistions, it's far to tedious and normally ends up really janky looking, although it can be really cool looking What I normally do is make my character change their pose whenever there is a pause/tone shift in the dialog To change the pose, (I just do what lavendertowne describes) This is far easier and looks much cooler in my opinion :)
at 2:17 keep in mind that if you stretch something, it has to squash to retain the volume, making it more fluid. Although it is an eye so im not sure how well it would apply, but try to squeeze the eye horizontally when you stretch it vertically and vice versa and see what you prefer.
Great tutorial and undertale music?! This is not only teaching me how to animate this is also giving me a huge dose of nistolgia! Thank you for this tutorial Lavendertowne! Informative and entertaining as always!
For full body movements i recommend combining the two methods shown in the video, still drawing in between frames from each pose but still having that bouncy effect!! Thats how i do it personally
WOW! Honestly, these are the easiest/best tips I have ever seen! I have watched a lot of videos about the principles of animation about timing and leading up to motion.... But this was sooooo much more helpful! Especially coming from an illustrators perspective.
Hey Haley! You probably won't see this, but I just wanted to say that it was great to see you at the Litup author event yesterday in Kansas city! I was the redhead with the Lavender shirt who asked if you'd ever met Leblehblehbleh in person! 😂 I know you got kind of cut off in your response, but as a long term subscriber and fan, it was amazing to meet you!

I think you should make like an animation 101 video!! like what programs to do, how to animate, tips and tricks, stuff like that! idk if u already have one but I've been struggling with animation so bad and I'd love it if you made one if you haven't!!
Hiiiiiii lavendertowne I actually read your books unfamiliar 1 and I was begging my family to get me the second one and on my birthday I got the second one btw my fav character is babs and Winston.
Thank you so much for your tutorials and I like how u explained ur tutorials in a concise and simple way. The snapping reminds me of the 12 principles of animations l learned such as stretching and squishing the poses to add that exaggeration
When i have a charcater snap from pose to pose i usually add a smear frame to bridge the gap along with the squash and stretch you suggested. To trick the viewer into thinking its smoother than it is i like to take the time to add some over lapping animation. The character could have long hair or a skirt that takes time to settle, so even though the body movement is 3-5 frames the overlapping animation makes it look smoother like its animated on 2s
i have always thought animation would be too much for me (i'm a super impatient artist T-T), but these tips make me feel like the barrier to entry has lowered significantly, and I really want to try some of it now! Thank you for sharing :)
I’m not that much informed about animation, but I heard that having reference sheets of characters in different angles or expressions also helps. So you won’t have to redraw the same thing over and over.
Ive just started animation, these tips are so helpful! The eye tips look so helpful for beginners, and I appreciate how you included a more dynamic option thats not too difficult:D
💫 Great video as always, loving the music box version of the Megalomania in the background! (Not sure how to spell it, but it's the most known song in the Undertale fandom, it's at 3:32) ✨
It's worth bearing in mind that how you animate something depends greatly on intended tone/style. Most of these "shortcuts" apply best to comedic animations such as storytime videos; you probably wouldn't see them as much in something like a somber music video.
When I'm lip-syncing I'll actually write out the words(in the corner of the screen or something) and time them first. If it's a longer word I'll break it up. It doesn't take too long and it's actually easier since you're not having to replay it quite as much to be like, "Is that right?" It's more black and white obvious when something is mistimed.

Yeah, it's working for fast animation

I call that the cat blink, because cats blink slowly when they trust u. I like doing it to the street cats that let me give them scritches.
I did a small animation of a character blinking, but her eyes are droopy and she was supposed to look tired and dead inside, so it worked out great
I was thinking of when ppl do the frog blink with that animation method lmao
Glad you made this when I get an animation homework
