    Thanks for explaining why you didn’t just fill in the pond. As soon as you mentioned the state’s involvement I suspected as much. The owner ought to look to see if a tax break is available because of the wetlands. Wishing you and your team a great week. Thanks for sharing this insightful series of videos. Stay safe out there. Peace Chris.

      It sounds like it may be getting converted to a conservation easement or something like that, which does involve tax breaks.

    So now that the owner isn't allowed to use the property for anything and has to maintain a state-regulated mosquito haven at his own expense, I wonder how long it will be until some state regulator's brother in law offers him $20K for the property and is allowed to develop it into fifty units of condominium housing at $1M a unit.

      What if you owned land downstream of that dam. Maybe you even have a house to it? You wake up in the middle of the night feeling your house being pushed off the foundation because the water from that crappy dam hits your house. Now you’re scrambling to make sure the kids are safe and you realize a couple sleep in the basement. I am quite right wing myself, but have common sense and sh*t!! I wouldn’t be very god d*mn happy if that was looming over my head. It already failed once.
      It’s not always a conspiracy.

    • @zacharydavis2284
      @zacharydavis2284 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@shitloveaduck that "crappy dam" has mostly likely been there since the 50s or 60s and it took a hurricane or other massive rain event to wash it out. A rain even like that could turn that gully to a river or mud flow that could just as easily flood a home. I would understand the state wanting the overflow and/or spillway redone to current code once it washed out but forcing the entire dam to be removed and rebuilt or breached and turned to wetlands is pretty extreme for a dam that's likely been around for 60-70 years if it's really only had the one issue.

    Seems a great shame to lose the pond after so many years, I am 52 and come from a time of reason and logic, I was part of renovating a 160 year old house on 23 Ballyholme Esplanade in Bangor Northern Ireland, now the 3 story house was built on a sand foundation and we were all panicking that the architect would make us underpin the house with proper foundations.., the architect arrived and inspected the foundations and asked us how long the house had been standing.., 160 years mate!.., well he said that if the house had been on a sand foundation for that time then he was happy enough.., I guess my point is that in all those years that pond had had one boo boo.., then statistically it was alright.., but we seem to live in an era of (could and might) happen.., its a sad story for sure.

    • @Vickie-Bligh
      @Vickie-Bligh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Sad story yes, but you have to have responsibility for what you own as well. Chris, on the first episode, called the dam sketchy (he even might have forgotten that he used that word frequently while walking around it). The overflow was undercutting the dam. He said there was a lot of wet ground at the base of the dam. Aerial photos show not only the highway but a home across the highway from this dam. The dam had a boo boo as you described. Had the owner contracted with Chris or someone with his ability & ethics, the state may not have stepped in. But the repair was poor and people's lives were at risk. And not one person's life is worth 'a pretty pond'.

    • @wfemp_4730
      @wfemp_4730 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's often best to err on the side of caution. The dam's proximity to the high way could result in personal harm or even death if it fails. Besides, having just one incident in the past doesn't mean there won't be any more.

    • @formhubfar
      @formhubfar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Vickie-Bligh I have been watching Chris for a few years now, surly it would have cost about the same to core the dam with clay?, if you look at what Chris took out it was 90% red clay any way.

    • @Vickie-Bligh
      @Vickie-Bligh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@formhubfar You heard him say it would be at least 6 figures to remake the dam. If what Chris was doing in cutting out the dam is all it would take, I'm sure a deal could've been made. If the Dam Failed once and the Owner previously had an Unqualified Contractor attempt to make Repairs, I can see why the State of NC is Concerned. There is NO way the Land Owner would have enough Insurance to Rebuild a State Highway so a Huge Lawsuit against Landowner would happen.

    This Dam breaching is a interesting economic variation from a overflow of a pond. The height of the water is but about 30 %little in this pond. Outer the pond you to clearing. The next video to bring the louse from the task.

    I'm no engineering but the chances of that washing out completely looks very slim to me perhaps they could have just asked him to put in a better overflow I mean you've been there for 4 days with two Earth moving machines or more

      Heh heh,,,,,,,,,that was some large rip rap. That one stone would have been a pretty big challenge for the mini!! Hahaha. Very true though. It would be fun in real life watching the 250 doing such a job. On video it’s impressive!!
