The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Don Freeman here. This show was 1970 and I was a young keyboardist playing gigs in Philadelphia and New York. In 1974 I started playing with Sister Sledge and we went and performed at the Tokyo Music Festival in the summer of 1975, Astrud Gilberto was also performing at this event. She sounded incredible plus they had a 50 piece orchestra to accompany her. We met and hung out and she told me she lived in Philadelphia so we exchanged numbers and she had me over for dinner a few times then asked if I’d like to be her musical director/ keyboardist for a 3 week tour of Japan. So I put a band together and we went toured Japan in January of 1976 for 3 weeks. We had a great time and she sounded phenomenal as always aside from some initial nervousness which we all get but we also had lots of laughter and humor all the time. After that tour I moved permanently to Los Angeles and wrote songs for many artists and played on their records etc. I came back to Philly from London around 2003 and was able to connect with Astrud at her apartment in Philadelphia which was fantastic. Obrigado Astrud❤❤❤
Hey don , yes she was something !! ...I'm sure you have great memories of her , me being from Philly too , would always hope to bump into her , I knew she lived in a condo overlooking the Delaware river ! ...I was told she was a little withdrawn due to her shyness . But she seemed so down to earth and approachable. I had heard about her dying as I was working in center city , and on my way home (on the L- train ) I remember thinking about her when the train passed the spring garden stop , and those high rise condo's overlooking the river . I thought about her all the way home ..lol. I loved that voice ! ...r.i.p. Ms. Gilberto .
That’s an amazing anecdote…..her hazel eyes were to melt for…I have so many of her lps….listening to them in that era so often on rainy Sunday afternoons in England on my radiogram..
Berklee College of Music student here and recently discovered Astrud. Really taken by this beautiful woman’s music. Rest in Peace Maestra.
One of the most beautiful voices of all time

What's it like in Greenland?
Want to visit california?
R.I.P Astrud, thanks for your lovely voice and great music ❤
she’s such a treasure 🥹
Here is more complete information. First Astrud sings "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), followed by a a bit of "Samba de uma Nota Só" (One Note Samba), then "Manhã de Carnaval" (Carnival Morning - theme from Orfeu Negro / Black Orpheus), then "Agua de Beber" (Water to Drink), then back to "The Girl from Ipanema" in English/"Garota de Ipanema" in Portuguese. Great voice and interpretation!
Thank you. 😊
Agua de Bieber. Ahead of its time.

Perdemos?????

An angel with the voice of one
What a beautiful voice that complements a beautiful woman! Sadly she will be missed!
Wow.. Astrud in Color on The Ed Sullivan Show... Awesome !!!! God is She Beautiful ☺☺💘💘
I can remember hearing this song when I was 4 years old in 1964 and enjoying the scent of my uncle’s girlfriends White Shoulders Perfume. It did something to me back then that I couldn’t explain.

Yes!!! Was my fave, white shoulders!! Magical that scent..🌸
Love it...Cudahy....that smell, the scent...it never leaves us...In '64, I was 8...and fondly remember my mom playing this on our Hi-fi stereo ~ ....man, where'd the time go ...geez ~
Times when Brasil - my country - was really represented throughout the world.
Now it's only known for off duty cops and motorcycle assassin's lol
You have great Jiu Jitsu. And wonderful cartels!
Thank you for giving us Bossa Nova and Astrud.
@@Chachoeshonestly a shame, the country truly is beautiful.
nothing more romantic that this music
If you didn’t know. Bossa nova means : the new thing! It is still exciting 60 years later. In the 1960’s it seemed that every performer had a bossa nova album.
Astrud has so many more beautiful songs. Her first solo LP, The Astrud Gilberto Album from 1965, is a mistresspiece.
❤❤❤Rest in Power, Astrud Gilberto! You leave us with gave us a great legacy 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽AGUA DE BEBER, CAMARA!
RIP Astrud Gilberto!!🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Rest In Peace Astrud 🕊
Her singing talents were totally off the Richter Scale. And very beautiful as well.
I have always loved her dearly for some reason
Amen
@Wow, I love slow music. it's a shame without her, and Carmen Miranda Brazilian music would've gotten the exposure it deserved. Her Carmen and Elis were white, but they gave a platform to the Afrobrazilian cultures as well . Songs like Roda for Elis . The way Carmen Miranda the way she dressed was clearly Afro derived . And Astrud with Berimbau and take me to Aruanda .
@@kaleahcollins4567 Carmen Miranda não representa o Brasil!!!

😮
I realized very early that most Brazilian musicians considered Astrud with kinda disdain. Maybe it's because of her European origins or her affair with Stan Getz. Don't really know...
But she was the spacecraft that propulsed Bossa Nova to reach its worldwide audience. She was the right person at the right time in the right place... R. I. P. Astrud...!
Astrud the best female All Time Artist and most Talented and Most Beautiful 👄

She sounds especially good here
R.I.P. Astrud. Thank you for your heartfelt music and staying strong after being taken advantage of by the wolves in sheep's clothing!
Rest in peace to this legend , I’m 27 but I love all types of music and this just speaks thousands of words 🔥
There was such a variety of great music in the 60s.
One of my favorite female voices of all time.Smooth sultry..understated..
Like a warm summer breeze
The song was released in 1964 and actually written in 1962. Won a Grammy in '65. Ed Sullivan was about 5 years late on this one, but at least we got a nice color version.😎
I would love to have a glass of wine with you
Hey better late than never

Rest in peace, Astrud. Thank you always.
RIP Astrud Gilberto. ❤
O mundo inteiro se encantava co a cultura nacional. Orgulho imenso do meu Brasil 🇧🇷
I think she is my soul mate...❤
Thanks heavens that at one time there was the Ed Sullivan show, right?
Perfecta..... Astrud ❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nice to see Astrud--who only performed once in Brazil--singing in Portuguese.
RIP..ASTRUD
What a performance! All those wonderful songs, different rhythms, melodies, & so on seemlessly blended
This is absolutely stunning. La garota de Ipanema Is that kind of song you can't forget and try to sing when reminds it. Just sublime.

RIP BEAUTIFUL ASTRID. VOICE OF AN ANGEL
Beautiful songs, sweet singing, the music of my childhood...
Such lovely music. I love you, Astrid! 😢
R.I.P. Astrud Gilberto
I was 5 weeks old when this was recorded.
This wonderful song and Acker Bilk’s Stranger On The Shore are still, IMHO, two of the best songs ever written.
Acker Bilk's favourite piece of fan mail contained the line 'I heard you playing Stranger On The Shore last night. You should get the rough end of a pineapple up you.' Oh to receive such a missive!
Saludo desde o brazil
I think that it’s sad that this generation may not know about this music. Up to those of us that do to keep it alive.
Meu deus do céu!!!!
Astrud Forever🇲🇽🇧🇷
Not just a Singer, but Very Beautiful!!! 🎤🎤🎤👀👀👀🎶🎶🎶🎶

This is perfect music for 1960s James Bond! 😎✌️
Never saw what the woman who sang this classic standard look (ed) like...young and lovely
Riiight?? 👍👍👍
Much love from Fiji
Adeus, Astrud Gilberto ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks from Mage City . Rio de Maneiro Brasil
She was somthing!
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes Each one she passes goes, ah
When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes Each one she passes goes, ah
Oh, but he watches so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him
Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes He smiles, but she doesn't see
Oh, but he sees her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him
Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes he smiles, but she doesn't see
She just doesn't see, no she just doesn't see
But she doesn't see, she doesn't see, no she just doesn't see
Thank you!! 🆒
I always thought it was the grammatically incorrect "she looks straight ahead not at HE" cuz, y'know... it rhymes with sea
