  • I decided to finally take a look inside the Thomas Kinkade Disney Dreams Collection adult coloring book that so many people have been recommending - but things didn’t quite go to plan.
    In this video, I’ll take you through my creative process and ALL the challenges I experienced in trying to recreate Thomas Kinkade’s style with colored pencils and markers.

    Honestly, instead of using white india ink(which repels most other ink,) I would of used white gesso. In a thin enough layer it would still show the lines while still being able to cover them up with pencil and ink.

      White gouache could also work under pencils, but not under waterbased pens of course, unless it's acrylic gouache

      I would have also used white gesso to tone down the black lines instead of paint or ink, and maybe clear gesso will still manage to rescue this page ... if nothing else, it will give the paper some tooth for the pencils to (maybe) work their magic ........ at this point, with 2 layers of hairspray over top, it might not even warp the paper LOL

    Just have to say that I actually think that the white ink "mistake" actually adds to the painting, especially around the tiles. It makes the background interesting to look at, and at the same time making the characters stand out. I actually like the final result! But I do understand your frustration with the supplies not working properly over it!! :) However, I'm not sure if I can accept your apology for using my favorite movie as a test paper ;)

    Thomas Edison made so many mistakes inventing the light bulb. He said they weren't mistakes, he just found 10,000 ways NOT to make a lightbulb. He only needed to find one that worked. Thank you for illuminating some of the ways NOT to colour a page! Oh, and someone has already tested several things to whiten lines..CMW? Worth checking. Great work! Love the video.

    • @Scarletcroft

      Actually yes and no. Thomas Edison improved/patented the light bulb through experimentation, but he did not invent it. Various forms of lightbulbs already existed 40 years before Edison made them better. Ofcourse your point still stands and like Edison we must also learn from the mistakes of others and not just our own.

We never witness that struggle in others, because nobody posts it. Yes, we talk about it, but you support and make the process okay. It's a beautiful coloring book, and I like that there are reference pages in it. Thomas Kincaid probably used oils or acrylics to paint them, so pages colored with pencils and/or markers will never look the same no matter how talented the colorist is. I give you a lot of credit for sticking with this page so long and going the distance after your experiment did not go as planned!

  • @tinybird2413
    @tinybird2413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I would recommend instead of white ink that you use something called watercolor ground or conversely a thin layer of acrylic gesso. These are primers which are designed to prepare your surface for wet mediums. A lot of journalers use it to make normal paper handle wet mediums a little better. The added bonus with something like acrylic gesso is that it can help fade dark lines. I don't entirely recommend using these with alcohol markers though because the stuff can potentially gunk up your nibs but it's great for light washes of watercolor and giving tooth for colored pencils.

    I know it’s hard to see when you’re in the middle of a project you’re struggling with, but to me the end result looks really good.
    I have some Derwent watercolor pencils that I love. You can color then rub a damp q tip or brush over to make it look like watercolor, but I love to dip the pencil tips in my water because it gives a really intense color that I can blend into the rest of the paper. The texture of the pencils is soft and easy to work with. They’re m6 favorites of all the colored pencils I’ve ever used.

    Thank you so much for making and posting this video. I recently got a DC comics coloring book but have been afraid to start it due to some of the issues you encountered in this video. Now I feel more confident to bust it open and start coloring. Although I already separated the pages to make it easier to color without have the spine attempting to close constantly. I just subscribed to your channel as well and looking forward to the next video of the completed Dumbo page.

    Sarah, thank you so much for posting this. It's not that we enjoy artists failing, it's that seeing them fail means we can too and it doesn't matter, it doesn't make you a worse artist or less than an artist, and that makes us feel much better with ourselves and more predisposed to trying and experimenting without the pressure. So yes, please do post these sort of videos, we love them immensely.

    I appreciate that you demonstrated the issues that can arise using coloring books. I discovered a couple of years ago that colored pencils are impossible to use if you have a smooth surface which can even be caused by multiple layers of the color pencils. I now focus on just using alcohol ink markers with fine tips and using the blending pen. It creates a more realistic appearance. Of course these fantasy books do not require realistic, lol. Sometimes I do add colored pencil for accents on top of the ink, but very limited. FYI - Hairsprays contain up to 50% alcohol, thus your inks ran.

    You can always put a clear gesso or white gesso (if it’s not super opaque). It will give a good grip for the pencil, and protect the paper from damage of wet media or markers.

  • @parisgreen4600
    @parisgreen4600 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would suggest white-inking the lines...but then photocopying the image onto a nice sturdy paper to solve the texture issue.
    You might even be able to skip the inking, and just lighten the image using the settings on the copier. This has worked great for me when I was working on a sketch, or made a mistake in coloring. Or if there's just a detail on the coloring page you don't like, you can white it out and re-draw it. You're the boss!

    What about putting down the white ink (or gouache or whatever you’re using as a line cover) and then doing a layer of matte(workable) fixative before coloring over it? That’s what I’ve been doing and it works pretty well. It has a bonus of adding a tiny bit of extra tooth to the paper for my pencils, which is great in the Posh and create space books with thin paper that has very little to no tooth.
    Edit: btw your “destroyed” picture looks better than my best try ever has. Lol

  • @PaperhugsbyKim
    @PaperhugsbyKim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure if this has been suggested yet, but one thing you can do is photocopy the page you want to color on a laser printer using marker paper or a different type of paper depending on what medium you want to use. You always do an amazing job coloring!

  • @asheranna
    @asheranna 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    oh goodness, well you gave it a good try. Yeah I would have transferred it onto better paper, and I don't have a lightbox or a printer so I understand why you wanted to see if the white ink worked. I actually use my laptop screen as a lightbox when I want to transfer artwork or use pencil on the back of the paper to trace the outlines to transfer it. I think it would have been best if they made the outlines like a light gray color so you could use pencils over it to cover it up kinda like grayscale coloring books.

    Now interestingly enough, Prisma color has a great white color pencil that may have been good to use over the black lines before adding other colors. Since the paper wasn't playing nice, I completely understand calling it quits with that page. Your right about the photocopy print, that is the lesson learned. I do not own that book, but I know my abilities and I do not feel like I need the book in my collection. I enjoyed your video, thanks!

The reviews (which I didn't watch until after I had ordered it) all burst my enthusiasm bubble - if talented people like that can barely come close to replicating it, what hope do I really have? I haven’t read the other comments And I applaud your efforts! I would try a clear or white gesso in a thin coat if you really want to minimize the lines. @@SarahRenaeClark Krylon makes a good one that’s available on Amazon US-maybe Amazon AU as well. Test on a scrap first-I’ve never used fixatives on alcohol markers. 🤔 Gesso will give the paper more tooth. But-it will wrinkle it because I doubt that paper is made for wet media. You can iron it though before you color on it. Good luck! Believe it or not you made me want to try-I’m not very skilled with cp and a coloring book like that one would be a good place to practice. There are so many times, when comparing my pages to others, that I get really down on myself, and won't even call myself an "artist" I'm just a colorist, or a hobbyist. I'm not elite enough to be an "artist" But to see that others have fails too, and pages that go from the ugly stage to an even uglier stage, is OKAY!

      I realised that my markers weren't going to work for this kind of book. I've been colouring tiny little areas here and there rather than do a full page. One gripe I do have is that Thomas picks the same characters over again. I'd have loved to have coloured a picture of Merida with the Scottish hills in the background. Not Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty on repeat.

    And you should try white gouache to hide the black lines. It provides a textured surface upon drying. But you won't be able to use any wet mediums on it.
    Also, you can try white gesso. It dries completely, provides a textured surface, and you can use as much wet mediums over it as you like.
