Swatch before you start. Sometimes pencils are not the colour you think they are! Also you can check which colours will work together, whether for blending or just being next to each other. Wherever possible, swatch on the paper you are using - I have been amazed at how different colours can look on different paper.😀 Enjoy!

Great collection of tips! I have a BA in graphic design and illustration in traditional media. I have always said that you can learn from anyone, it doesn’t matter who they are or what they studied, or not. I love to learn new tricks, and your videos have so many to use effectively. I am not a purist, I always use mixed media for my coloring: from watercolor, acrylics, pencils, markers, ball point pen, etc. What you said about experimenting is so true! Don’t be afraid to use and mix the material that you have. Take breaks in coloring and do warm up exercises with your arms and wrists before having long coloring sessions. The angles of the pencils are so important, thank you for mentioning them. Take care of your hands all the time, don’t go from hot to cold on them… for example, when you do the dishes (use gloves), in transitioning weather ( spring, autumn) do not expose them to radical temperature change. The hands, and wrists are your most valuable tools if you want to be a professional. Lighting is also important, unless you are a pro, avoid coloring at night without the appropriate white light. Yellow light is terrible for coloring and it changes colors. Your eyes in coordination with your hands are also very important. If you like to color outside, avoid direct sunlight on your paper… not good. Believe it or not, some of the best light sources come from overcast days (light is consistent and varies little, it is good for your eyes. Sometimes we wish the most expensive materials in the market, thinking that as “magic” beautiful art will come out,.. Nope! Practice and experimenting is the key, practice and making mistakes. I fully agree with the paper choice, invest in good paper for the correct tool. And as tip: water color paper must always be kept away from light and in sealed plastic bags. This paper tends to absorb dust, and you won’t notice it until you ruin a commission for a client if you were not careful enough with the storage. In general, cold pressed paper absorbs dust, so I always seal mine in plastic bags until I use it. This tip was given to me by a professional watercolor artist. Thank you for your videos!
@@ellahyland1705 This what the expert explained: water color paper has pores, so micro dust gets in and fills in those pores. So when you add water, the paper cannot absorb it anymore, it is like painting on hot press paper, the colors just run on the surface.
Thank you SO MUCH for the paper recommendations! I draw my own 'coloring pages' in a sketchbook, and I really like to keep the black and white version so that I can make multiple copies (plus, it's cool to display the colored version beside the black and white version). Everyone says not to use regular printer paper, but I haven't been able to find higher quality paper that specifially works in a printer. I'm definitely going to try the ones you recommend; thank you again ❤
My cheap inkjet hp printer is able to take Neenah cardstock, 65lb. I buy the pdfs from etsy. If I buy a full book and want it, or need a size larger than letter, I take it to the local printshop and they help me out for cheap. A lot less than buying and shipping coloring books from overseas, and much better quality than Amazon books of the same price as I spend at printshop and etsy combined. But try Neenah cardstock on Amazon. I bought an entire ream for like $10 and it's awesome for pencils and watercolor. I always spray the pictures with fixative spray or hairspray after they're printed so the printer ink won't run with wet mediums. And then I put them in protective plastic sleeves in a 3 ring binder. Like a project book. Best of luck! I know finding working cardstock and printing pdfs has changed my entire coloring process and opened up a whole new world. I'm not just relegated to book depository or huge shipping fees from physical book sellers.
Neenah Vellum Bristol cardstock, 67 lb, 147gsm to be more exact. It has one side that is soooo toothy and wonderful for pencils. It is incredible. I also like to do some greyscale pictures of fairies and mermaids on different colors of cardstock like cream, or tan. That way the ink still shows up but I can use white pencil and pearlescent paint and they show up beautifully. It helps to create and show things that "glow"

Howdy and happy day!!! :) Great tips! (And my tip back: I have concluded that one side of the neena Bristol vellum is “rougher” than the other. Definitely worth a close look, it makes a difference, I think, for sure) 😉 Like doing arpeggios or scales on the piano I haven’t spent a lot of time practicing blending, and I can tell in my coloring. 2022 goals! Also- it’s a little redundant but I’ve colored the same page twice just to take what I learned the first time and refine it on the second (while changing color schemes, usually). Terrific video!!! Tip for people that have problems with hand pain ... try Kuretake Brushables markers instead of colored pencils. They dont bleed through, and they are awesome for gradients. You get 2 different but matching shades on each marker, and just using same end again on the area you already applied them to, it will darken the area bit... and third time will darken it even more (just let it dry before each go to avoid damaging your paper) and then you follow with the other end whooa you have super nice gradient :) . Only downsides i have observed with these so far is sometimes they are difficult to get and then are suddenly again available easily .... and you will be going through your most favorite color or two pretty quickly. Also frequently one end will be low on ink easlier then the other one ... which is bit anoying so i cut ends of those off to avoid confusion .... and then use them as a polka dot stamping tool :D . (Note: sometimes i use these a lot, sometimes i dont. It depends on my current mood and what my Rheumatoid Arthritis is doing ...)

It's super important and so many people forget or don't know and struggle on for months/years with expensive pencil upgrades, without thinking to try different paper. Best 11 minutes i've watched on coloring tips. Paper is everything. Upgrading the types of books i buy, i don't have a printer, has greatly improved my confidence because i get better results. I often find really cute books at discount stores with artwork that looks fun but when i feel that paper i'm like, nope. I also purchased a few gel pens in fun colors to experiment with working with two mediums and your tip about white highlights really added a wonderful new dimension to my coloring.
Another wonderfully informative video Sarah! For me, what draws me to your videos over any others is how down to earth and 'just like the rest of us' you are! I love that you try and fail, and then try again. With all the 'expert' advise out there .. YOU .. gave me the courage to try! (And fail, and then try again!)

Before this video, i never realized that i constantly adjust my pen/pencil grip naturally (from 7 years of drawing practice, mind) and I think it's a great tip for those who don't already do this!
Try starting with your shadows. Starting with the light shades is often more difficult because it's hard to see and builds up layers of pigment early. There is only so much tooth (texture that holds the pigment) on a page. Start with your darks and you establish form to your work while reserving the tooth for blending with the lighter tones.
I enjoy looking at your videos but the kind of things i want to learn how to color is things like how to color wood, windows, clothes. how to come up with a good color pattern, how to highlight to make your art stand out, where to put the highlight. things like that. Thank you Lana

Hey Sarah there is something called the light board and you can use that to copy the image from a colouring book to the paper you want so you can use that in any future videos
The light boxes are fantastic but if you want to transfer an image to some decent paper like watercolour paper it can often be too thick to see through which is my main struggle.
Thanks for sharing, tips like this are very helpful for newbies like me. I usually use charcoal pencil colors, so using colored pencils is quite new. But I will try to apply your tips.

Hi Sarah, you're tips make it seem like I could make something good as well. I've watched lots of your videos and have started blending. I do need to practice more.😊 I have an ohuhu sketchbook for my markers, and am on the look out for a sketchbook for pencils.
One important thing I seldom see talked about is sharpening. Sharpening makes a ton of difference and doing it wrong can ruin your pencils by either grinding them down way too fast or breaking cores. Invest in a good sharpener. There are some very nice handheld options, but I would do straight for an automatic, and look for one with the spiral grinding blades. Also look for a vertical sharpener, they put less stress on the pencil, and one with adjustable holes so various brands fit properly. Look at professional office/school models, they are less expensive than the ones sold for art specifically and often better quality. Don't jam the pencil in, insert it softly and let the sharpener do the work. Make sure it is perfectly straight and centered. If you are using a handheld always twist the sharpener, not the pencil.
Love watching you work Sarah, bright and breezy and fun to watch, learning a lot from you, thanks for sharing. I have had a look at your resource page, which is really informative. However, a lot of your links take you to Amazon, but a lot of the items are from USA and the shipping is often more than the product. I also may be looking in the wrong place, but a lot of your books are also from USA, which is confusing, seeing as you are in Australia. Is there anywhere in Australia you purchase your supplies from, especially the paper, which can be difficult to source? Keep up the great work, you are inspiring :).
This is really great advise! I was wondering what colors did you use for Mirabel's skin. I'm trying to learn how to color skin but I can't seem to get my colors right.
I have a challenge for both you and Jazz a to do together... Go to my library/saved videos/playlists and choose Easter eggs(40+) and choose what interest each of you! Do it as a surprise for your children and an educational experience for everyone! I'm only let out of bed 5 hours a day for the rest of my life after an accident in 2008 so yes I've watched almost everything in my library! I can only sleep 3 hours at a time then pain wakes me up so I've had plenty of time to watch things!

Laser printers are best. Inkjet will always smear. But you can try some fixative over the lines before drawing to help reduce smearing on inkjet if you don’t have an alternative.
I’m in Australia, so you can buy all the paper I show in my videos. Although a lot of it is US Letter size and shipping is pricey- I have still found it to be worthwhile! Amazon seems to be the best place to look. Spotlight stores also have a decent range.
@@mishca I really love my Arteza pencils which aren't super cheap but aren't hugely expensive either. If you really want a lower budget but still good pencil set I recently bought the Brutfuner pencils for my 7yr old nephew and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. There are a few videos about "oily coloured pencils from China" which include the Brutfuner ones and that are all very similar in quality, as they're pretty much the exact same pencils just in different packaging so they are worth checking out.
You are super talented. Some people are so rude. I know you enjoyed proving that person wrong, but they should have just stayed in their cave of eternal misery. It takes guts to start to learn something new and then to show the world your learning journey.
As a solo mother I must ask you, what is this free time thing you spoke of? Haha, kidding, kind of. I don't have much time to colour currently but when I do it's rather late at night. I used to use a white out pen for highlights lol, then I found gel pens.

Hey! Just wanted to ask which coloured pencils you would recommend to someone with weak wrists? Since I broke my wrist as a child I'm struggling a lot with pain especially when using pencils, even though I like the results so much!
Look for a pencil that lays down a lot of pigment. Quality pencils are usually better than cheap pencils, since cheap pencils use a lot of filler, so they require more pressure. Avoid crayola. Faber-Castell, Prismacolor and Derwent have some good options worth trying.
None. Seriously though colored pencil is just hard on hands and wrists. It requires a continuous firm grip and continuous repetitive movement. You could spend a ton of money and still have the same problem. Look into alternatives.. you may need to convert coloring pages to more appropriate paper.. try downloadable pages or use a scanner to copy them. There are at home printer options or you can take them to a local copy shop.. just be sure to use either pigment based inkjet or laser printer if using wet media so the lines won't run. There are the watercolor and inktense pencils... markers.. brush pens... straight watercolor, gouache, or acrylic... or try a liquid blending option so you can apply only a small amount of traditional pencil. Your choices may depend on style.. some are much more vibrant and graphic compared to a soft loose style.
@@waymire01 I appreciate your feedback but I tried out Faber Castell Polychromos and while I still experience wrist pain after a few hours, yet overall I created a lot art with them without even feeling a flicker of pain. They are a huge improvement to the cheap colored pencils I've used before where it took only a few strokes for my hand to cramp up. Also I do not use them for colouring pages but rather to create my own art in my sketchbook. I used markers before but they destroyed the paper and bled out a lot so I had to use an alternative. In conclusion, I'm really happy with the advice Sarah gave me and the Polychromos work just fine for me.
A self-taught graphic designer, and I’ve drawn my own coloring pages, although never colored them in until recently. (Admittedly, coloring them in myself has changed my approach to designing them, so I wish I did more coloring sooner!)

I often find really cute books at discount stores with artwork that looks fun but when i feel that paper i'm like, nope. I also purchased a few gel pens in fun colors to experiment with working with two mediums and your tip about white highlights really added a wonderful new dimension to my coloring.
Another wonderfully informative video Sarah! For me, what draws me to your videos over any others is how down to earth and 'just like the rest of us' you are! I love that you try and fail, and then try again. With all the 'expert' advise out there .. YOU .. gave me the courage to try! (And fail, and then try again!)

Before this video, i never realized that i constantly adjust my pen/pencil grip naturally (from 7 years of drawing practice, mind) and I think it's a great tip for those who don't already do this!
Try starting with your shadows. Starting with the light shades is often more difficult because it's hard to see and builds up layers of pigment early. There is only so much tooth (texture that holds the pigment) on a page. Start with your darks and you establish form to your work while reserving the tooth for blending with the lighter tones.

Hey Sarah there is something called the light board and you can use that to copy the image from a colouring book to the paper you want so you can use that in any future videos

The light boxes are fantastic but if you want to transfer an image to some decent paper like watercolour paper it can often be too thick to see through which is my main struggle.

One important thing I seldom see talked about is sharpening. Sharpening makes a ton of difference and doing it wrong can ruin your pencils by either grinding them down way too fast or breaking cores. Invest in a good sharpener. There are some very nice handheld options, but I would do straight for an automatic, and look for one with the spiral grinding blades. Also look for a vertical sharpener, they put less stress on the pencil, and one with adjustable holes so various brands fit properly. Look at professional office/school models, they are less expensive than the ones sold for art specifically and often better quality. Don't jam the pencil in, insert it softly and let the sharpener do the work. Make sure it is perfectly straight and centered. If you are using a handheld always twist the sharpener, not the pencil.

Love watching you work Sarah, bright and breezy and fun to watch, learning a lot from you, thanks for sharing. I have had a look at your resource page, which is really informative. However, a lot of your links take you to Amazon, but a lot of the items are from USA and the shipping is often more than the product. I also may be looking in the wrong place, but a lot of your books are also from USA, which is confusing, seeing as you are in Australia. Is there anywhere in Australia you purchase your supplies from, especially the paper, which can be difficult to source? Keep up the great work, you are inspiring :).

I always copy images from coloring books because I like to try different mediums. That way I can control the paper I use and try different styles.

Laser printers are best. Inkjet will always smear. But you can try some fixative over the lines before drawing to help reduce smearing on inkjet if you don’t have an alternative.

I’m in Australia, so you can buy all the paper I show in my videos. Although a lot of it is US Letter size and shipping is pricey- I have still found it to be worthwhile! Amazon seems to be the best place to look. Spotlight stores also have a decent range.
In fact, I think my hot-pressed watercolor paper came from Spotlight if I’m remembering correctly, and it is one of my favorites.

@@mishca I really love my Arteza pencils which aren't super cheap but aren't hugely expensive either. If you really want a lower budget but still good pencil set I recently bought the Brutfuner pencils for my 7yr old nephew and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. There are a few videos about "oily coloured pencils from China" which include the Brutfuner ones and that are all very similar in quality, as they're pretty much the exact same pencils just in different packaging so they are worth checking out.

I’ve been coloring regularly for about 18 months. A dabbled a bit before that, but not frequently.
You are super talented. Some people are so rude. I know you enjoyed proving that person wrong, but they should have just stayed in their cave of eternal misery. It takes guts to start to learn something new and then to show the world your learning journey.

As a solo mother I must ask you, what is this free time thing you spoke of? Haha, kidding, kind of. I don't have much time to colour currently but when I do it's rather late at night. I used to use a white out pen for highlights lol, then I found gel pens.
That was my point 😜 parents don’t get free time! Haha

Hey! Just wanted to ask which coloured pencils you would recommend to someone with weak wrists? Since I broke my wrist as a child I'm struggling a lot with pain especially when using pencils, even though I like the results so much!
Look for a pencil that lays down a lot of pigment. Quality pencils are usually better than cheap pencils, since cheap pencils use a lot of filler, so they require more pressure. Avoid crayola.
Faber-Castell, Prismacolor and Derwent have some good options worth trying.

None. Seriously though colored pencil is just hard on hands and wrists. It requires a continuous firm grip and continuous repetitive movement. You could spend a ton of money and still have the same problem. Look into alternatives.. you may need to convert coloring pages to more appropriate paper.. try downloadable pages or use a scanner to copy them. There are at home printer options or you can take them to a local copy shop.. just be sure to use either pigment based inkjet or laser printer if using wet media so the lines won't run. There are the watercolor and inktense pencils... markers.. brush pens... straight watercolor, gouache, or acrylic... or try a liquid blending option so you can apply only a small amount of traditional pencil. Your choices may depend on style.. some are much more vibrant and graphic compared to a soft loose style.
@@waymire01 I appreciate your feedback but I tried out Faber Castell Polychromos and while I still experience wrist pain after a few hours, yet overall I created a lot art with them without even feeling a flicker of pain. They are a huge improvement to the cheap colored pencils I've used before where it took only a few strokes for my hand to cramp up.
Also I do not use them for colouring pages but rather to create my own art in my sketchbook. I used markers before but they destroyed the paper and bled out a lot so I had to use an alternative.
In conclusion, I'm really happy with the advice Sarah gave me and the Polychromos work just fine for me.

A self-taught graphic designer, and I’ve drawn my own coloring pages, although never colored them in until recently. (Admittedly, coloring them in myself has changed my approach to designing them, so I wish I did more coloring sooner!)
