Re: panel glue up: if you take two boards that will be attached and flip them in (so the faces are kissing and they’re standing on the edges that will be glued), clamp them together from the top, and then run them together over your jointer, you’ll create complimentary angles. Unclamp, flip out so faces showing - the edges should then attached perfectly. Cheers.
Going to have to find me some of those plastic razor blades thanks for the great tip. Great idea on building it in the room alot easier on the back. Turned out really good. Keep up the great videos
Quick suggestion. Put some blue tape on the clamps before you place the boards to keep the glue off of the clamp. Should help eliminate having to clean glue off of the clamps afterward. The cabinets and desktop look amazing together. Keep up the great work.
Very impressive build having to deal with those long and heavy boards. Congratulations on 100K. Your channel has sure grown with your great work. On to 250K !!!
The dust collection on the sander helped significantly, but there was still dust with the router and track saw. A good deep cleaning afterwards was needed, but still beats the alternative.
Awesome job my friend!! Very proud of you. You really have come a long way in your projects and experience. God bless you, your family, and precious cat.
I gave your video a like because I've wondered how to make desktop and also that there was a cat in your cupboard (I've been there myself). I like the colour co-ordination of the Desktop and the cupboards.
Looking at the tree in the window, looks like Wednesday or Thursday last week when I almost lost my patio umbrella lol. Nice job and good idea not hauling it up 2 flights of stairs.
Nice video. Great looking desk. I've got desk envy. I'm surprised to see anyone editing video on small laptop screens. That massive desk would support a larger monitor quite easily. haha.
Très beau travail sur mesure, je ne parle pas engrais comme tu le sais mes voire les figurés me rende de l’idée pour tout ce que tu fait, je apprend très bien et vois che ton chat curieux ta déjà testé tout. Tout de bon de la Suisse
Beautiful desktop ! The ash looks amazing, pity it's a dying tree in the UK now , I've always loved the grain. Who's a lucky girl with a Festool track-saw then ? I can't justify one ... (yet). It passes feline inspection too, I see.
What a beautiful setup you have there. If I may ask (and I apologize if it seems snarky), was there a reason you didn't use a biscuits, dowels or pocket holes with each plank? As someone who is looking to build his own desk soon, I am fascinated by others builds and steps on how they do it. I think it looks incredible, and I am looking forward to making my desk. ......as soon as I rip out all the carpet, paint the walls and install the new wood flooring LOL
Hi Marie, beautiful project, the table top is stunning, simple and beautiful. Great tip on the sand paper, glad to see the finished product has the cats approval. Thanks for sharing Sorry, well done with the subscriptions, way over 114k now, soon be 1/2 million.
Looks great ... its simple and works great by the looks of things ... see a few more projects down the road for your space hopefully:) .... great job and video... thanks for the video
I made a similar but not as nice top for a desk, starting with 2x6 lumber in 8' lengths. First I cut each board in half, ripped 1/4" off of each narrow edge to make them square then ripped down the middle so I ended up with 2.5" wide boards. My desk was supposed to be 6' long so I cut some of the 4' lengths into 2' lengths then I arranged the pieces in an alternating pattern 2' plus 4', then 4' plus 2' so the boards overlapped in the middle and provided strength. That gave a lot of glue joints. I didn't have a 6' long workbench for the glueup so I found a smooth and flat spot on my garage floor, put down a layer of plastic and did the glueup there. I should have scraped the glue but didn't so that was more sanding. I did some hand planing on the surface but it's not perfectly flat, to get that I would have had to use a router sled to flatten it. I was trying to do this on a budget, otherwise I could have just bought a factory made butcher block top. My resulting softwood top is 25" x 6' x 1.5" thick, a hardwood top one foot longer would have been heavier. I can carry mine around pretty easily but my arms can reach across the 25" width. I'm working on the legs now.
Nicely done Marie! This made me realize I'm in the same situation if I decide to make my own desktop; small shop, and then it has to go up two flights of stairs. Build in place makes sense. The entire project came out amazing! I love the color of the base units and the look of natural wood and painted surfaces together. And thanks for the tip on the scraper! I have one from amazon on the way. :-) And congrats on 100K! You'll be at a million in no time!
Yes, building in place made this so much easier. The dust can be a nuisance if you don't have a dust extractor, but it's manageable. Enjoy the scraper!
Very nice! I'd love to do this! About how much do all the tools cost for the project? Any way to get a flat desktop without joiner, planer and table saw?
Beautiful desk Marie. I see Osmo all over the Tubes (as the kids call it these days), how does it stand up to water? I live in fear of water rings. Thanks for the great work!
Well, apparently well, but I tend to be pretty careful with all my furniture so I can't confirm from personal experience. I guess that's why I make so many coaters ;)
@@DIYMontreal Thanks Marie! Unfortunately for me the use of coasters will, of course, lead to some horrible fate for my children. Or so you'd think based on their inability to use them! That's why I asked! Thanks again and please keep up the great work!
Great desk and exactly what I was looking for with me and my wife's DIY project.. I'm curious.. can you build it mostly with just a table saw and clamps and power drill/ impact driver?
Beautiful work, Marie! It turned out amazing! 😃 BTW, about cats... We have 3 here! 2 of them are sleeping here in the living room and the third is with my mother in her room watching TV. 😂 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! (Cats always included!) 🖖😊
There is a fence tool you can use to get a perfect square. The problem with using just the fence and the board is that if you use an imperfect edge with the fence it basically transfers those small wedges to the opposite side and then you flip and do the same thing to other side and never truly get square. Just something I saw from someone else's videos.
This is an old video, but I just watched and you've done a great job! May I kindly ask your chair brand and model? I have been looking for mesh seat and back office chairs, but been unlucky.
After milling the wood, did you let them sit a day or two to see if anything warped and then run thru the jointer again before gluing? I’ve been told that after milling and exposing the wood to the air it can warp so best to leave it a few days ?
I actually talk about this process in latest floating shelves video. In this case I didn't wait. I immediately glued up the top so it wouldn't have a chance to warp. Alternatively leave it a few days if you have enough thickness to do another final milling session right before glueup.
Beautiful top, Marie, and a great build. It's good to see another video from you. One question - where are the hexagons? Are you going to put a cat bed in there or are you going to turn it into solitary confinement for punishment? All right, 2 questions. Congratulations on 100K. Take care. Bill
Can't put hexagons everywhere ;) But I'm working on a new hexagon jig design, so plenty more in my future! DISCLAIMER: no animals were harmed in the making of this video
Awesome build, that’s what I’ve been wanting to build for our new home that we starting to build this past Dec... But I want a black/ ebony stain desk, have you stained anything black?? Thanks for sharing
I watched too many building of my own desk, but this one is the best one so far!
The entire series was great!
Hey matt, loved your videos
Hey Encina ur videos r great. 👍I follow ur ideas

Beautiful work, as usual. This was a perfect example of the old saw, "You can't have too many clamps".
You can NEVER have enough clamps!
Looks great. Ash is a nice choice.
Thank you! I'm really happy with it :)
That is one beautiful build! Congrats on the 100K!, well deserved, Marie!
Thank you so much!

Good call on gluing it upstairs. Glue ups still make me nervous too! Great job!
That came out real nice!
Thanks! It was a long labor of love :)
Most impressive. Great job on the top, it look fantastic. I'm impressed.

You thought you were building a desk, turns out it is a Cat storage unit! Congrats on 100k
Ha, thanks! Just goes to show you can store anything you want. A very flexible storage solution ;)
The desk is beautiful but the setup in general looks amazing!!!
I really like that finish you used! Turned out great.
Excellent build. I wish I had the room to do woodworking again
Congratulations on reaching 1000,000 subscribers, nice award....beautiful desk, even came with a surprise inside...Take care...stay safe ...
Thank you! Cheers!
The final result looks pretty awesome. I have to build my own custom oversized desktop, too.

Awesome build! Brave of you to build in place, im sure the dust was a pain, even with dust collection.
The dust collection on the sander helped significantly, but there was still dust with the router and track saw. A good deep cleaning afterwards was needed, but still beats the alternative.
Hello, am amazed how you do things well perfectly. Am a custom maker from tables to cabinets. Thanks for the videos job well done.
Great job Marie! I too use Osmo on most projects and it has served me well. Very well done video!
I need to follow suit and make a 6footer top for my Wifes craft room desk... Congrats Marie on 100k well deserved... have a great day!
Go for it! And thank you!!
wish i would've had one of your tools. Like the color of the cabinets.

Nicely done. Excellent video. Turned out beautiful. I was not familiar with Osmo Polys-oil. The finish looks great and it looks easy to apply.
So much helpful advice! Thank you
Wow looks great. When you ripped on your table saw did you use the up/down method. That will help clean up the edges a lot.
