You totally saved me, I was on line for a month now trying to find someone who knows what he is talking about, half an hour later my a/c is working again, thank you very much for the video,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. There are several videos on TH-cam, but yours is the most efficient one. I followed your steps and it took me about 30 minutes to replace faulty FSR on my E46. FSR was failing last two years (blower was changing speed on its own) but last week finally died........ 'It is easy - if you know what you are doing'
Best video yet. this is the only video Ive seen where it shows him pulling out the ivac tunnel. thats been the sticking point for me. now i can complete the repair.
Thank you for posting this. I was able to do this repair for less than $50.00 and it worked! Everything went back and looks professional. I admit it did take me about 2 hours total but it was well worth it. only one small scrape on my knuckle. Thanks again for taking the time to post this.
Thank you verry much for your time and effort. :) i just wanted to say that the heating engine gave me signs runing with variable ups and downs turations at every. second until one day stoped and drain my battery. im going to apply your strategy and i will let you know. Thanks again
Many thanks for the video- I did mine in about 35 minutes thanks to you! The vent wasnt too bad but certainly the most difficult part with the next being the annoying tab that held in place the old FSR:) thanks again!
Thanks so much for this video! Super helpful. The only thing different on my 2000 328i was that the FSU was held in by two more T20 screws. The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the HVAC tunnel back in! My climate control fan is working again, just in time for hot weather!
Thanks, good video, took me 45 minutes after watching your video. I did have to use knee pads though, and disconnect the cables for the glove box, to get it out of my way. Part cost me 60 bucks, and now have heat, thanks again for your effort in creating this DIY video, :)
Hi "BMW 3 Series" Thank you so much for this video! I was able to follow your instructions to get my FSR changed out last night, and everything seem to be working ok right now. I only problem I had was that I didn't have the Torx20 screw driver like you did, but those "L" shaped Allen key equivalent. Needed some patience to get them out. Need to invest in Torx screw set :)
Can you kind people please give me some advice?. I have 3 series touring e46 model, my blower works intermitedly and rear heater is also not working. My local mechanic said it was the climate control panel as it is a common fault but also could be FSR. As it seems that both blower and rear heater have been affected would you guys say that it is more likely the climate control panel itself rather than FSR?. Thanks. P.S Best FSR repair video on youtube. Clear, HD quality, no shaking camera etc
Heya, The best ideas that I have noticed was on Volt daddy (i found it on google) Gotta be the most helpful info on batteries and this same gear that i have found.
I can see you've a left hand drive. I'm not sure the fsu is located in the same location for European bmw here in UK. Mines right hand drive, would it still be behind the glove box?
Good video i have a 330ci 2001 and last day the controls works fine but do not blowing, i have to drive the car with out heat, but today after my second intent it works good and still working. Should i replace it?
hello, i have an issue with this repair if you can please advise. i did this, just as you show here, though i dont have a thermal cam (lol). once replaced, and the FSR installed, i tested the fan speed controls and Auto AC functions again. This time, it worked like a charm. low speed, high speed and auto all performed well. however, going to turn the car off and pack everything up, the fan did not shut off. this remained on after i turned the AC off, turned the car off etc.
Its the FSR :-) I bought a used FSR/FSU from the local BMW stealer for ½ price. I use a tripod for my HD cam to make a good quality video. Have to agree with you, I hate those video whit shaking camera. If my english was better, I would also give out instructions during the repair, but hope the texts are ok :-)
Hey, the best ideas that I have seen was on Volt daddy (i found it on google) Gotta be the most detalied info on batteries and this kinda thing that have found.
May well be the FSR. It has an electronic circuit inside and is powered all the time. So a fail in the FSR can cause a battery drain....and have en fan running a life on it's own
My battery has been slowly draining over night..I found out it was something with the AC..I took out the AC fuses 28,62,63...but it still drained..input the fuses back but the AC don't get power now... No hot or cold or any lights on the scene...please let me know if the FSR replacement will help!?!?
Hi,I want to do the same test you do at the beginning of your video. I have an analog ohm tester but I don't know how understand if the part is gone or not. Please could you answer how to proceed for testing? best regards.
My e46 blows on start up of the car for a few seconds and erratically in between. The car had been left standing for over one year. Is it the FSU/FSR or do I need a new battery?
If the blower motor is running up and down in speed for no reason or if the blower motor isnt running at all, it's most likely the FSR/FSU that is failing
hi I have a question my bmw blowers not working the it does not blow the air at all previously it do that some thing it starting blowing some times not but now a couple of days its totally shut down not blowing the cold air as well as warn air I checked all the fuses they are fine infect when I remove one of the fuse for blower and put if back it makes me feel that their is nothing wrong with the wiring but I don't want to spend 100s of $ to mechanic's
hi i have a bmw e6 318 i and the heater fan works good BUT i do NOT get any HEAT comeing out NO HEAT what do i do to fix it theres no HEAT ??????? help me
this will not shut off. i finally disconnected the FSD connector for the mean while just so this wouldn't drain my battery. any ideas what this might be?
A failing FSU/FSR can cause the fan to not spin at all, spin with its own life (up and down) or just not possible to adjust the speed on. Just because it was changed once, does not mean that it can't fail again. This part is poorly designed and is likely to fail
It can be a bit tricky to get it back in place. I had to fight with it for 5-10 min before I managed it my self. Had to pull the console for the radio a bit out to get more room.
its on the right hand side so no need to remove the glove box also just a bit of advice before you remove the final stage, remove the plug and clean inside the connections as my one was dirty it fixed the problem. how you can tell if its dirty, get a steel rod and touch it of the final stage housing to the steering column making two connections if your heaters come on its a bad connection, try this before getting the part (best of luck)
on the right side in a right hand side car... plus if you touch a steel rod of the steering column and final stage with the egnition on it might fix itself
I trie the repair myself. But i broke the mounting plastic that was in front of the fsu. It had that little motor with the metal lever. When i move it i hear some flaps or something moving inside the dash. Called and lokked around cant fin fhe part anywhere. 64116979467. Part number. Can i just bypass it? Or what should i do. Thanks

This is probably one of the best two videos out there for the FSU replacement on the e46.

ivac tunnel removal is not essential. Though in the way, doesn't prevent the FSU from getting out.
Me to. Now i know that i cant push it

No need for words when the detail is as great as your video! Saved me tons of time, thanks!!

Great job on this video. I would never have guessed the ventilation box would pull out of the way like you showed. Did the job in about an hour. Nice!
Good job. I was able to replaced my FSR by following your presentation. I did it in an hour. Thanks!

Thank you so much. This video and "DIY BMW E46 FSR FSU FIN" were all I needed to this job myself! Thanks.
Thank you! This is the best video on this job that I could find!

best video i seen on here to replace the FSR.
Thanks a million. Saved me a lot of time watching this before hand.
awesome video step by step, i did mine in an hour and it works perfectly, getting that vent back in was a pain in the ass
Great video! Thanks, couldn't have done it without your video
Great details! It took a total beginner 1 hour to complete. Saved me $300 bucks (installed by

This is a fantastic video for this procedure...I'm going to install it right now.
My pleasure.
I would have added some oral instructions if my english was better, but glad the texts can do it
This video saved me at least 100 euros. Thank you!
Just use a bit of force. Its not glued or fastened in any way. So moving it up and down while pulling it and it will come out
What does that control console do? that one which is in front of FSU?
Heya, The best ideas that I have noticed was on Volt daddy (i found it on google) Gotta be the most helpful info on batteries and this same gear that i have found.
Thank you vor the video, excellent job and helps a lot on how to change this part.
Get the Behr brand for the replacement (US$40) vs no-name brand (
I can see you've a left hand drive.

I think you should try check the fsr

good intruction, thanks
Ty for this video 😊
very helpful
most likely the fsr, but you can try measure the battery voltage first

Ok so my ac and heat turns on in my car but its just not blowing out anything, would this be the solution to fix it?
LOL- I'm nursing those same scratches. There's a lot of metal tabs in there that's like sticking your hand into barbed wire :)
Good video but I can't figure out how to remove HVAC tunnel

Great video! Because of it, I was able o fix my 330ci. Had a hell of a time with the HvAC cover though. Overall, took about an hour. ;-)
Good video
i replaced the FSU easily. But can't replace the hvac tunnel. You seemed to cut away here. Any ideas?
It can be a bit tricky to get it back in place. I had to fight with it for 5-10 min before I managed it my self. Had to pull the console for the radio a bit out to get more room.
It was my bad, Turned it around and it went in about a minute.
And I admit it took me a bit longer as well. I cut out the a bit in the video where I didnt do the right tasks :-)
my blower motor just do not stop.. still working ...
What side is the FSR on in a right hand drive car ?
its on the right hand side so no need to remove the glove box also just a bit of advice before you remove the final stage, remove the plug and clean inside the connections as my one was dirty it fixed the problem. how you can tell if its dirty, get a steel rod and touch it of the final stage housing to the steering column making two connections if your heaters come on its a bad connection, try this before getting the part (best of luck)

anyone had any issues with a after market/ non genuine FSR?

Yup, I scratched my hand as you can see in the video :(
I cannot stress enough how awkward this is for right hand drive cars haha

hey thanx i did mine for under 30minute imagine at he garage how much they charge me -_-''''' 200$
