Please keep the cab on it. The cab protects the components from the sun and rain. And it also adds to the look of the tractor. Personally, fit an aftermarket AC to the cab, and make sure you have a heater for winter😂.
@@Landon4803-v9nno it doesn’t 😂, this is the classic look for the 4020s that were built in the late 60s to 70s. Almost every tractor build from 68’ to 72’ had this cab on it. And it does look good.
TENT the windows.... AC up on top... keep it coool and warm and run run run ;) well does it really need to be the SNOPLOW... BUT eh depends on how it starts in the sno eh? HAVE AN AWE SOME EVERY THING!!!!!
Sweet tractor! But I'd recommend not shifting from forward to reverse without the clutch, just cause you can doesn't mean you should. It is really bad on the transmission and we've had to put 2 in our 4020 because of it. Just my 2 cents
What a beautiful tractor! My father’s first new tractor was a 1966 4020 with power shift. I was in the 6th grade and put 100s of hours on it. I loved that tractor! It had an Excellent add on cab but no ac. My vote is keep the cab. You’ll never regret buying this tractor. All best!
Keep the cab, my grandpa and uncle have one with the cab and in the summer they take all the windows/doors off, but like others are saying, it will also protect the cab components
That’s a really nice tractor. Before you decide whether to keep the cab or not, I’d suggest looking up the serial number and seeing if you can find how it was originally configured. Some things won’t be right if you take the cab off, like the decal placement of the 4020 number, which should then be moved to behind the engine. Also, those fender are integral to the cab, so you’d need to get fenders as well. While that isn’t a Deere cab, it is extremely close to the factory cab option we had on our 4320, so I’m thinking it was still a factory option, or dealer install, even though it was made by another company. You should wear hearing protection in there though. The noise levels are actually louder than without the cab and much higher than safe levels. I’m sure your ears were ringing after using it so that is your sign that hearing protection is needed. Beautiful tractor and congrats on the purchase.
@@whjerts that’s the name I couldn’t quite come up with. I knew it wasn’t a Hiniker on that tractor and that’s why I thought it might be factory option.
Still have my Dads 4020 that’s identical to yours. It was the first tractor he ever bought brand new. I will never ever sell it. Haulin hay is good for you! New holland bale wagon makes it even better! The only problem with baling small bales, especially with a Deere is if you’re not on the ball watching as your windrow thins or gets bigger, it will bale odd sized bales. Gotta watch it as it goes ion the pickup head to make sure there’s an even flow. It’s not bunching up or it’s pulling the windrow apart. Nice, even flow. I still bale about 5k
Keep the cab on it. Helps to keep away skin cancer. You two guys are great at starting your farms. You guys rock. The young boy “ Came on driver” had me laughing.
Keep the cab. You have one without a cab already. It’s nice to have options. If you need to use something when it’s cold out, the cab will be awesome. If it’s hot, use the open station machine.
Keep the cab add some fans in the corners, the cab keeps the sun, wind and rain out plus I'm not sure about how much noise it keeps out. The safety factor also just like the young kid riding along while you were bailing, he is not going fall off-out of the tractor. I know this from personnel experience when I fell off a tractor fender luckily I didn't get hurt, but could have bin terrible .
Uncle Buch got some Competition. Nice tractor, Grant. Now you could run the Mower/Baler on one 4020 and Rake / Tedder with the other one. If you guys goes with a wheel Rake in the V Style and a decent 2 pull type Tedder, (Older models don't use Hydraulic, so can be pulled by smaller tractor, We currently pull our two row Tedder with a 230 IH or 40 John deere. That would increase your hay operation and baling operation). With that cab on the 4020, i would recomend a Tar River, Plastic 3-point Dry box Spreader. They run new about 900, but would be good to run loose/Pellets fertilizer/Grass Broadcast over your grass and corn field in the spring or fall and using the other tractor to disk or Cullipact the seed and fertilizer into the ground
I don't remember which one of our 4020 or 4320 had the power shift or if they were later models with the side console for hydraulics. They were both great tractors. IF the cab is in good shape, keep it. While you are not dealing with animals in winter, it is nice to be out of the wind. I am sure you can add an aftermarket heater and cooler. Side note, if you don't want to exit the cab really quickly, as in falling on your face, come down backwards. (facing the interior of the cab.
Nice, Grant! Keep the cab. Fix or install AC. That boy is an animal! One quick tip for doing small squares. Dont just use your arms to lift them over your head. Pick up the bale, then use your knee to boost them up. Use your arms to add to the momentum after you knee it. It's much less tiring that way.
I agree with everyone else about the cab. I think down the road you would regret taking it off. It provides shade from the sun, protection from the wind and with the windows all out you have really good air flow. I also have to comment on how good a worker Ty is. That young man hung right in there with you guys pitching & stacking hay. That's a hot and dirty job and he took it in stride. Good to see these days.
You'll definitely want to put a handle bar on the Power shift side like you have on the pto side. Will make shifting a lot easier. Nice tractor, cab is in great condition.
Leve the cab on a take the door off trust me it males a difference also if it's after 1971 model you can add ac to it if its a 1969 or 1970 you can also add ac just have to do some modifications also sove insulation in the dash keeps alot of the engine heat out also you should buy a 4520 or 4620 also we have the same cab on are 1966 4020 we just modified it so it fits
My dad’s first tractor, when he started farming, he bought a 4020. He told me the first thing he did was take the cab off. He always told me it was way cooler that way. He had the previous version with Syncro Range transmission. It always seemed like a puzzle when I drove his 4020. Great tractor he still has it. Doesn’t use it as much. Also back to the cab. I’ve seen some guys get the yellow umbrella. I always wanted one for my dad’s tractor to keep the sun off. It would be the best option.
Two of the best tractors John Deere ever made, the 4020 and the 4440. We had a 3010 on the farm when I grew up, then my dad sold it and got a 5410 among other John Deere tractors.
Keep the cab, it will keep the sun off of you better than a folding canopy. It also makes it safer for people riding with whoever is driving. I have seen the cut snake hanging out of a bale while hauling hay.
Grant looks like you have some hay/alfalfa fields now. If you don't plant them to corn or soy beans I suggest getting a haybine or discbine(your choice). Great looking 4020, now you just need a 4440 to get the two best tractors John Deere ever made.
keep the cab as it is in good shape.. you will be happy on a rainy day.your big deeres will be used for the high hour jobs with low sound and ac. you can run with the doors off in summer on the 4020

Keep the cab. You can take the windows off in the hot weather and it will keep you nice and shaded. Then in the cold you can put the windows back on and run that heater to stay not so cold
I’d love to see the cab stay on grant ! the dust levels will stay way down , and I hope you plan on pulling one of your wagons with it this fall looks like a really clean tractor !
When we got our 4020, we took the cab off. It’s more noisy with a cab actually, and hotter like you already said. The fenders don’t seem to be the most secure without the cab though. I quite like the look of the tractor with just a canopy. Also, look up the “grove conversion” for those SCVs. They’re much nicer couplers to use and never leak. The standard ISO conversion doesn’t seem to last more than 500hrs without needing new seals.
Keep the cab. It'll be good for shade. Get a short piece of square tubing & bolt a magnet to one side & a 12v fan to the other side. The square tubing acts as a handle & the magnet allows you to stick it to any place in the cab with metal. Cheap solution in the absence of ac. I usually have mine blowing on the front-right side of my face. Portable, easily positioned, & only limited by the availability of 12v outlets.
Great tractor ! I have the same one but an earlier model ! What you can do is take the front, sides, and back off and use the ROPS and roof ! Deere used their canopy and added the rest to make a cab !
keep the cab on it. It looks great. The only things I would do is put led lights on it as well as the 8110 and combine. I would also paint the mufler or put a chrome stack on it
Tye if hook the bale closer to the end when you pull it will lift the end of the bale slide easier. Just a suggestion from an old man who did a few bales when younger.
I have the exact same tractor. Been driving it since I was 12 😊 keep the cab on it. Also standing at the rear of the tractor and facing it, the left hydraulic remote, you can add a power beyond block to it, so you can add additional grecian hydraulic valves like I have to run a front-end loader. My loader is a jd 158 loader. It's alitte much for the front axle. The jd 148 loader is recommended.
Absolutely not!! It will cease to be a 4020 factory tractor. It will just look....dumb! All those tractors shown on utube with chrome strait pipes look as dumb as a young kid with pants ready to fall off! Ron
This John Deere 4020 Powershift is a classic gem! Love the side console and powershift transmission-no clutch needed for shifting is such a game changer!
That's a clean, beautiful JD 4020. It's a classic. This brings back so many memories of driving a 4020 as a teenager, back in the 60's in Indiana. I loved that tractor! We also baled hay, using a smaller JD 2010 to pull the baler. You can't beat the smell of newly mown hay. Stay safe! Love from TX.😊
I'd keep the cab if it was mine. Of course you do what you feel is best :) Great video! Nice to see Spencer healing and young Ty helping out! Great drone footage. Drones are becoming par for the course in capturing the action. The 4020 looks esp. sweet after Spencer washed it! Thanks again and I'm looking forward to your next one! (video OR tractor lol)
From old white haired farmer took my cab off kept rops and top nice shade and not so much noise. Took fan off top and covered with plate steel used rtv to seal it. Sharp tractor. I have 1 4010 and 2 4020
TIMT the windows of the cab. Plenty of air flow with doors open, or fix the A/C, very simply system. Can use modern parts to rebuild system, new style lines.
Do like cane farmers would do with old John Deere’s and allis charmers down here in Louisiana. Remove the windows for summer use and when it gets cold enough put them back on.
You'll want to keep your power take off lever linkage for your valve adjusted up to proper specification. I forget exactly what the spec is (should be in the operators or deere tech manual), but it will keep your actuator pistons from pulsing and taking the o-rings out. You'll have oil coming out of your bell housing and you'll have to split the tractor to put those new o-rings in.
Beauty tractor!! Keep the cab it would be a mistake to remove it. You guys are going to get good at mechanicing with two 4020's around. That is a good thing
Take the cab off put a canopy on it for shade but get a kit that you can put on it that blows hot air from the engine to the operator we have one on our tractor and it work’s awesome and it comes with hard plastic windows to help keep cold air off of you and I see you using that tractor a lot more in the summer than in the winter
I was deployed overseas in 1974 when dad wrote me. Dad had great 1973 soybean crop - $12 per bushel. And wrote a check for brand new John Deere. Told me the seat cost more than his first ford tractor
Please keep the cab on it. The cab protects the components from the sun and rain. And it also adds to the look of the tractor. Personally, fit an aftermarket AC to the cab, and make sure you have a heater for winter😂.

Told me the seat cost more than his first ford tractor
you should leave the cab on it and put air con in it then it will be a ripper 👍👍
Can you tint the windows to help with heat?
keep the cab. you can put ac to it.
