I was a photographer working front of stage at Live Eight. The biggest and by far the best gig I have ever attended. To see Pink Floyd live on stage was an unbelievable event. I turned my camera onto the audience pure unadulterated joy on every face as for the youngsters all I can say it was a Jaw-dropping experience for them. Enough said.
True that. Snowy White and other substitutes ( used here in “ The Who” sense) have performed lead guitar in this song for Waters, but no one can compare to David Gilmour.
Actually, Roger has claimed in any interview that the song was written based on an illness in Roger’s stomach during prep for a concert in Philadelphia.
The last performance was in Hyde Park for Live8. The band was persuaded to regroup for this one performance. There will be no more now that Rick Wright has died.

I've watched it till the end and I cried together with you. It's so heartwarming to see people watch this and feel the same emotions from that wonderfull music like I have. I've seen them in 1994 in Brussels Belgium. You can not imagine what it is like to see and hear them live. The sound was not stereo but quadrophonic. Speakers in the four corners of the meadow on the festival domain of Werchter. It was unbelievable! With a giant pig that flew over the crowd! What a show! Wish you were... there. ;)
Live8 is really the best for me, they mentioned Syd, all four were in the moment and playing together. Richard Wright is still there. It's the pinaccle for live Pink Floyd performances. Your reaction was very touching, I recommend Wright's solo album (Wet Dream) it's amazing and so underrated (Summer Elegy for example).

What a wonderful reaction. They are my favorite band as well, and I, too, prefer this version over Pulse. Pulse simply had too many musicians on the stage, the background vocals were muffled and out of tune, the tempo was too slow, and there was way too much emphasis on the lighting, Though David's solos never disappoint, I felt the one in Pulse may have been a bit too long and forced, almost redundant at times. Live-8, on the other hand, was pure, crisp, and sounded so much better due to the fact that the original four (not counting Syd) compliment each other so well and create the true Pink Floyd sound. Adding anything or anyone else to the band only diminishes the clarity of their music. As the saying goes, too many chefs spoil the soup.
Yeah agree with that, Pulse is just too "overcrowded". On Comfortably Numb, only Nick needed for the drums (sorry Gary, your attractions was cool, but there's no need for you on this track), and then there should be Rick on keyboards, Roger on his bass and vocals, and David on lead guitar and vocals. I don't like their approach to Roger's vocal part on Pulse too, they made it like God talking to a man, where it should've been a doctor talking to his patients. Plus no matter how great of a bassist Guy Pratt is, Nick + Roger will always be Pink Floyd's definitive rhythm section.
I was at Earls Court and in Hyde Park and I can say that I'm with you. Pulse was technically awesome, but that special reunion transcended the music itself and was one of the few times I was so moved by the moment that I almost broke down and cried. I wasn't alone. Keep up the good work x
It was nice seeing them play again but I feel the reunion was forced you could see it on Gilmour’s face at the end, he wasn’t loving being there with Roger. Plus I feel Roger was trying a little too much to be the center of attention. Other than missing Roger’s vocals the Pulse version was in my opinion the best there is. The way Gilmour has the strat almost screaming in agony at the end gets me every time.

I always have a hard time watching the Live 8 show for that same reason. Knowing it was their last time all four would be on stage together always chokes me up. It was a relatively smaller production than the big tour shows of either David's or Rodger's live versions but this being a 20 minute benefit concert and not as long as usual, just seeing them all together in the original vocal and instrumental arrangement is all you ever need. Watching your reaction, it hit me harder than usual. As soon as your eyes started to water I lost it, and I've watched that show almost hundred times.
I think something genuine and special never losing “novelty”, it’s like a trigger, pulling out emotions, and we not gonna got over it, cuz it’s what we deeply love ❤️
I had no clue that Pink Floyd played together as a full band, at this time in their lives. Dave and Roger put their bs aside for a night, I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing that version of Comfortably Numb.
It was David and Roger, in the back of my mind i always hoped they would put there differences aside and get back together for at least one more tour especially after the live 8 reunion but when we lost Rick i knew then we wouldn't ever see this happen as the original Pink Floyd, which i know Syd Barrett was actually the original member that David more or less replaced. There will never be another Pink Floyd best bad of all time. It sucks we got to get old. RIP Rick and Syd
I have to agree with you. What killed me was the last few seconds, where they finally got back together to see the audience out. I think bands as legendary as this should take on apprentices, like in the old days, so the spirit can continue and not be lost in history in favor of the crap we hear on the radio today.
The music for Comfortably Numb is written by Gilmour & Waters. Gilmour only wrote the music for main part of the chorus. (listen to Gilmour's original demo) Waters took what he had and wrote lyrics and the music for the verses. As well, the "I have become comfortably numb" part was added to the chorus.

The Live8 performance is epic because all four of them, knew this would be the last time they would play together. I believe Richard Wright knew he only had a few years left. They only thing missing from their Live8 gig imo, is Shine On You Crazy Diamond, because it's about Syd Barrett. It would then have been complete.

I was at the Pulse concert in 1994 at Patriots Stadium in Massachusetts. Bar none, the best concert of my lifetime. That concert was an ethereal experience for all of the senses. Rodger Waters left the band in 1987 and was replaced by Guy Pratt who continues to play with David Gilmour. Waters only came back for that one performance at Live Aid and then parted ways again. MY GOD.! I've watched hundreds of reactions to the pulse concert version. I was there by the way, and so many people are searching for the meaning of this incredible song. It's so wonderful to find someone that truly truly gets it. I mean gets it on the deepest heartfelt soul level. Although we know that it was about Roger needing medical treatment before going on stage, and how he felt, it's also, as so many of their songs are, a deep observation of the human condition. The guitar solo is so intuitive to the feel and meaning of the song, it's Gilmore's unique genius. The solo sings louder than the actual words to convey the feelings and message of the song. It shouts of constant progressive suffering and screams at times in sheer desperation to escape the numbness and become truly alive again. The child is grown the dream has gone. You clearly feel this way down deep in your inner being and your review and take on it is by far the very best I have ever come across. Congratulations on being a true empath, with real feelings and a good understanding of what it means to be human. Much love and respect to you. ( I also saw Rogers Wall concert live twice) but I wish you could have been with me to see the pulse version of this.
The Pulse concert was re-edited and partially re-recorded (Nick Mason is very open about this in his autobiography). The Live8-version is the one that was broadcast directly on Tv without any post-production. Furthermore, I like the condensed solo much better, as the last 4 bars sound organic and inclusive as with the pulse performance it sounds disjointed and put-upon. Hands down, the Live8 is musically the better and more meaningful version, but the theatricals of the Pulse-Performance cannot be matched.
Totally agree. The Live-8 version is so much more pure and crisp. The background vocal on Pulse, especially in the beginning, IMO, sucked. Only Gilmour's guitar made it what it was. And I actually liked the guitar solo in Live-8 better.. though much shorter, it was played with a lot more emotion. You could see it on David's face. And the last few high notes give me chills every time, and I've seen it a bunch.
I watched the whole day of live 8 eagerly anticipating them performing together for the last time. When they arrived on stage the tears were flowing down my cheeks. 23 minutes of greatness followed. Beautiful reaction. I also had the privilege of seeing them on the division bell tour in Rotterdam , aged 20 and completely blown away .

I feel you girl..... I'm 51 years old. When I was 10 (in 1980) my older brother took me to my first concert. Pink Floyd- The Wall Tour. I have been a fan ever since. As the band broke up, I kept up with both sides at first. The on going Pink Floyd set and Roger's solo work. Over the span of say,... The early 2000's, I sort of drifted away from Roger. Both musically and socially he became even more focused on politics. I truly miss Rogers work on the human experience. Meddle, Dark Side, WYWH,Animals, The Wall. Arguably Roger Waters best work. All about the human experience. Now, it's often still concerning human experience, but laced with propaganda. The point of all this rambling is to say that being caught up in the drama of the last 25 years, it's kind of easy to forget the magic they really were together. Then, going back and watching this final performance again, I am struck with this huge sense of loss. It's a reminder that we will never see this happen again.
It was a great decades of last century; the best music was written and so lucky we are to have endless opportunities to enjoy it for the rest of our lives ❤️
i personally prefer the LIVE 8 version a lot better. better vocal and and better solo. its amazing that the older they get they better they get at live performance. the early live performances were really not that good
What a gift we have to witness these legendary performances? Both were great in their own right………..why choose? I love the Pulse (band line up) production, set list & iconic moments! The stage was beautiful, the lasers & visuals were fantastically clever! For me, the ending solo was so transcending………like Davis was in his own world! But at the same time it was a real treat to see the band reunite with Roger & for a good cause, a win for everyone! In watching this I do feel like Gilmour & company are slightly hesitant to get cozy with Waters on stage though they were completely professional! It seems as if it meant more to Roger than the others…………I’m glad they all had the moment together knowing Richard would die sometime after! All in all it was a masterpiece as well!
Pink Floyd is the greatest band to ever play a note. The best concert l have ever seen was Pink Floyd Animals tour in 1977 in Cleveland Ohio. The amazing thing that it's been over four decades ago l can still remember it. Life changing for sure.
I am glad I have grew up in an era that has given us Pink Floyd and so many other great artists and bands I feel sorry for the youngsters who will never be able to experience the joy that Pink Floyd gave us live, I’m watching the solo and see how emotional you are that’s what music is supposed to do, keep up the good work. I understood your personal connection to the group performance. It felt more human. David Gilmour didn't need to go wild on his solos. Just make it meaningful for everyone who there to see a historical,one time only chance of all the members together. I would cry too if that was the last time l got to see them or any band. For my prefence,I prefer the Pulse show,because of the energy and feelings put out by the band. i'd never checked to see if anyone had ever reacted to their Live 8 performance and, well, here i am...lol. to me, the Live 8 version is the 2nd best live version, with the Pulse version coming in 3rd. the best version for me was, is, and ever shall be, the version i saw them do live on opening Night of The Wall tour at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. and they're my favorite band as well. i saw them on 6 different tours.
I have a place in my heart for all the David's Comfortably Numb solos, i mean Pulse, Live 8, DSOT (the best one). There is room enough. And for you, girl and your precious reaction i have a place, too.

This is the greatest song (composition) of all time. Not to mention that solo with beautiful tone. YOU really feel the song intensly on a deep level because it shows in your eyes that are welling up with tears.I am moved by Pink Floyd the same way also. "Coming Back To Life"and "The Turning Away" evoke emotions from me. YOU are right about Rogers's description/insight on this song referring to "When I eas a child I had a fever, my hands felt like two ballons etc.. I also heard a story about how Roger was sick before a show in Philadelphia (Spectrum)so a doctor was called to give him some kind of shot to help him through his nausea/sickness to get him well enough to go on with the show. David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist one of the best ever. His soulful tone is unmatched by anyone, even "slow hand" Eric Clapton. Really enjoyed this review and your comments about escaping or hiding from feelings and pain in life. I bbeen through a period of life when I was emotionally frozen and spiritually dead. It wasn't depression just burned out from job and nightmare relationship. Emptiness was the base emotion, anyway came through that dark phase and have moved forward leaving negative thoughts behind. Hey PF fan I seen Roger in Toronto Pros and Cons Tour I'm from Pittsburgh Pa and was working in a couple Steel Mills in Canada at the time, Me Personally my favorite concert was The Animals Tour in Ohio, They came to Pittsburgh on my birthday! yes, I watched both versions, my opinion is that the pulse's one is unbelievable from the "sound" and "light show" levels, it is the perfection, but the second one is at another level of intensity, there, there is their history made of conflicts and complicities, great reaction
Maybe I've said it before but there are two guitar solos that I consider to be the greatest of all time. David Gilmore's solo in Comfortably Numb and Eric Lifeson's solo on Big Money . Others may have a different favorite ...and that's fine. But these two solos send me into the heavens and define a period of my life that was free and good. PK
Sorry, did you mean Alex Lifeson from Rush? If so, I love him too. But my favorite solo of him was a little different, it's from The Garden, the last track on their last studio album, Clockwork Angels, if you haven't already listened to that, please have a listen to the full album sometimes. IMO it's so great and the best studio album to end a discography ever.
I have to say everything gets better with age, or most things. THat doesnt meant there are no reasons to like one over the other, but anyone over 30 can tell you, art can only be improved with age. Experience beats raw talent every single time.
The Pulse had a better solo, But all of them together is priceless. I saw the in the 80's for the first time. Then Roger a few time solo . The were something special together
For sure it was fantastic that they got back together for the song, floyd fans will always them both. The origin was always Syd, without him there would be no Gilmore. I'm a long-time Pink Floyd fan as well and it struck me the same as it did you when I saw this version. I remember we tried so hard to get tickets to go to this event it was sold out so fast! My opinion this is the only way Comfortably Numb should be played David gilmour's one of my favorite human beings he's a very generous and generous human being I like to sometimes he's public with his family on TH-cam
Both versions are great but my favorite is taken from the actual wall tour. There is a version of it on TH-cam. Seeing Gilmore playing up on a balcony area in the corner with the wall built is iconic
I personally think that Pulse is my preferred version. Having said that, given the history of the band, the Live 8 performance has a power all of its own. It also sounds incredible, given that they hadn't performed together for about 25 years, and would have had limited rehearsal time.

I think Gilmour's closing solo on the Live 8 version is better than the one from Pulse. He just gets on with it instead of hanging around waiting for the lights to change. I think the simpler arrangement also shows Nick Mason's value to the band. I also like Roger Waters' own live versions of this song, whoever the guitar player happens to be. Maybe these days Dave Kilminster plays Gilmour better than Gilmour?
They were my favorite band for years. I had to stop saying that because there are just too many genres to choose one. When I saw them live for Delicate Sound Of Thunder I was transported to another world. Then I saw them again in The Division Bell tour. Not as good without Roger Water's animation but still amazing. The Wall... What can I say about that masterpiece? You already know.

What a wonderful reaction. They are my favorite band as well, and I, too, prefer this version over Pulse. Pulse simply had too many musicians on the stage, the background vocals were muffled and out of tune, the tempo was too slow, and there was way too much emphasis on the lighting, Though David's solos never disappoint, I felt the one in Pulse may have been a bit too long and forced, almost redundant at times. Live-8, on the other hand, was pure, crisp, and sounded so much better due to the fact that the original four (not counting Syd) compliment each other so well and create the true Pink Floyd sound. Adding anything or anyone else to the band only diminishes the clarity of their music. As the saying goes, too many chefs spoil the soup.
Yeah agree with that, Pulse is just too "overcrowded". On Comfortably Numb, only Nick needed for the drums (sorry Gary, your attractions was cool, but there's no need for you on this track), and then there should be Rick on keyboards, Roger on his bass and vocals, and David on lead guitar and vocals. I don't like their approach to Roger's vocal part on Pulse too, they made it like God talking to a man, where it should've been a doctor talking to his patients. Plus no matter how great of a bassist Guy Pratt is, Nick + Roger will always be Pink Floyd's definitive rhythm section.
I was at Earls Court and in Hyde Park and I can say that I'm with you. Pulse was technically awesome, but that special reunion transcended the music itself and was one of the few times I was so moved by the moment that I almost broke down and cried. I wasn't alone. Keep up the good work x
When I saw them all at LIVE 8 I knew that pigs had finally flown...... :-)
It was nice seeing them play again but I feel the reunion was forced you could see it on Gilmour’s face at the end, he wasn’t loving being there with Roger. Plus I feel Roger was trying a little too much to be the center of attention. Other than missing Roger’s vocals the Pulse version was in my opinion the best there is. The way Gilmour has the strat almost screaming in agony at the end gets me every time.

I always have a hard time watching the Live 8 show for that same reason. Knowing it was their last time all four would be on stage together always chokes me up. It was a relatively smaller production than the big tour shows of either David's or Rodger's live versions but this being a 20 minute benefit concert and not as long as usual, just seeing them all together in the original vocal and instrumental arrangement is all you ever need.
Watching your reaction, it hit me harder than usual. As soon as your eyes started to water I lost it, and I've watched that show almost hundred times.
I think something genuine and special never losing “novelty”, it’s like a trigger, pulling out emotions, and we not gonna got over it, cuz it’s what we deeply love ❤️
I had no clue that Pink Floyd played together as a full band, at this time in their lives. Dave and Roger put their bs aside for a night, I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing that version of Comfortably Numb.

It was David and Roger, in the back of my mind i always hoped they would put there differences aside and get back together for at least one more tour especially after the live 8 reunion but when we lost Rick i knew then we wouldn't ever see this happen as the original Pink Floyd, which i know Syd Barrett was actually the original member that David more or less replaced. There will never be another Pink Floyd best bad of all time. It sucks we got to get old. RIP Rick and Syd

I have to agree with you. What killed me was the last few seconds, where they finally got back together to see the audience out. I think bands as legendary as this should take on apprentices, like in the old days, so the spirit can continue and not be lost in history in favor of the crap we hear on the radio today.
The music for Comfortably Numb is written by Gilmour & Waters. Gilmour only wrote the music for main part of the chorus. (listen to Gilmour's original demo) Waters took what he had and wrote lyrics and the music for the verses. As well, the "I have become comfortably numb" part was added to the chorus.

They only thing missing from their Live8 gig imo, is Shine On You Crazy Diamond, because it's about Syd Barrett. It would then have been complete.

I was at the Pulse concert in 1994 at Patriots Stadium in Massachusetts. Bar none, the best concert of my lifetime. That concert was an ethereal experience for all of the senses. Rodger Waters left the band in 1987 and was replaced by Guy Pratt who continues to play with David Gilmour. Waters only came back for that one performance at Live Aid and then parted ways again. Great reaction IYOU !!
MY GOD.! I've watched hundreds of reactions to the pulse concert version. I was there by the way, and so many people are searching for the meaning of this incredible song. It's so wonderful to find someone that truly truly gets it. I mean gets it on the deepest heartfelt soul level.
Although we know that it was about Roger needing medical treatment before going on stage, and how he felt, it's also, as so many of their songs are, a deep observation of the human condition.
The guitar solo is so intuitive to the feel and meaning of the song, it's Gilmore's unique genius.
The solo sings louder than the actual words to convey the feelings and message of the song.
It shouts of constant progressive suffering and screams at times in sheer desperation to escape the numbness and become truly alive again.
The child is grown the dream has gone.
You clearly feel this way down deep in your inner being and your review and take on it is by far the very best I have ever come across.
Congratulations on being a true empath, with real feelings and a good understanding of what it means to be human.

The Live8-version is so much better, Roger singing the verses (as it should be) and the solo is wonderful, and it is really PINK FLOYD. anno 2005.

The Pulse concert was re-edited and partially re-recorded (Nick Mason is very open about this in his autobiography). The Live8-version is the one that was broadcast directly on Tv without any post-production. Furthermore, I like the condensed solo much better, as the last 4 bars sound organic and inclusive as with the pulse performance it sounds disjointed and put-upon. Hands down, the Live8 is musically the better and more meaningful version, but the theatricals of the Pulse-Performance cannot be matched.
Totally agree. The Live-8 version is so much more pure and crisp. The background vocal on Pulse, especially in the beginning, IMO, sucked. Only Gilmour's guitar made it what it was. And I actually liked the guitar solo in Live-8 better.. though much shorter, it was played with a lot more emotion. You could see it on David's face. And the last few high notes give me chills every time, and I've seen it a bunch.
I was lucky enough to watch the Live 8 one live myself ❤️ It felt like an out of body experience.

I watched the whole day of live 8 eagerly anticipating them performing together for the last time. When they arrived on stage the tears were flowing down my cheeks. 23 minutes of greatness followed. Beautiful reaction.
I also had the privilege of seeing them on the division bell tour in Rotterdam , aged 20 and completely blown away .

I feel you girl..... I'm 51 years old. When I was 10 (in 1980) my older brother took me to my first concert. Pink Floyd- The Wall Tour. I have been a fan ever since.
As the band broke up, I kept up with both sides at first. The on going Pink Floyd set and Roger's solo work. Over the span of say,... The early 2000's, I sort of drifted away from Roger. Both musically and socially he became even more focused on politics. I truly miss Rogers work on the human experience. Meddle, Dark Side, WYWH,Animals, The Wall. Arguably Roger Waters best work. All about the human experience. Now, it's often still concerning human experience, but laced with propaganda.
The point of all this rambling is to say that being caught up in the drama of the last 25 years, it's kind of easy to forget the magic they really were together. Then, going back and watching this final performance again, I am struck with this huge sense of loss. It's a reminder that we will never see this happen again.
Roger is "woke" for sure now, but love the music he helped produce in zPink Floyd. Timeless
It was a great decades of last century; the best music was written and so lucky we are to have endless opportunities to enjoy it for the rest of our lives ❤️

i personally prefer the LIVE 8 version a lot better. better vocal and and better solo. its amazing that the older they get they better they get at live performance. the early live performances were really not that good

What a gift we have to witness these legendary performances? Both were great in their own right………..why choose? I love the Pulse (band line up) production, set list & iconic moments! The stage was beautiful, the lasers & visuals were fantastically clever! For me, the ending solo was so transcending………like Davis was in his own world!
But at the same time it was a real treat to see the band reunite with Roger & for a good cause, a win for everyone! In watching this I do feel like Gilmour & company are slightly hesitant to get cozy with Waters on stage though they were completely professional! It seems as if it meant more to Roger than the others…………I’m glad they all had the moment together knowing Richard would die sometime after! All in all it was a masterpiece as well!
Pink Floyd created a powerful and through-composed sound and a great lightshow - but their greatest "show" was the simple truth in their music.
Pink Floyd is the greatest band to ever play a note. The best concert l have ever seen was Pink Floyd Animals tour in 1977 in Cleveland Ohio. The amazing thing that it's been over four decades ago l can still remember it. Life changing for sure.
I am glad I have grew up in an era that has given us Pink Floyd and so many other great artists and bands I feel sorry for the youngsters who will never be able to experience the joy that Pink Floyd gave us live, I’m watching the solo and see how emotional you are that’s what music is supposed to do, keep up the good work. While the Pulse version was sound and light and music,nothing can replace the final performance,because there would never be another time to play again,anywhere. I understood your personal connection to the group performance. It felt more human. David Gilmour didn't need to go wild on his solos. Just make it meaningful for everyone who there to see a historical,one time only chance of all the members together. I would cry too if that was the last time l got to see them or any band. For my prefence,I prefer the Pulse show,because of the energy and feelings put out by the band. i'd never checked to see if anyone had ever reacted to their Live 8 performance and, well, here i am...lol. to me, the Live 8 version is the 2nd best live version, with the Pulse version coming in 3rd. the best version for me was, is, and ever shall be, the version i saw them do live on opening Night of The Wall tour at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. and they're my favorite band as well. i saw them on 6 different tours.
I have a place in my heart for all the David's Comfortably Numb solos, i mean Pulse, Live 8, DSOT (the best one). There is room enough. And for you, girl and your precious reaction i have a place, too.

This is the greatest song (composition) of all time. Not to mention that solo with beautiful tone. YOU really feel the song intensly on a deep level because it shows in your eyes that are welling up with tears.I am moved by Pink Floyd the same way also. "Coming Back To Life"and "The Turning Away" evoke emotions from me. YOU are right about Rogers's description/insight on this song referring to "When I eas a child I had a fever, my hands felt like two ballons etc.. I also heard a story about how Roger was sick before a show in Philadelphia (Spectrum)so a doctor was called to give him some kind of shot to help him through his nausea/sickness to get him well enough to go on with the show. David Gilmour is my favorite guitarist one of the best ever. His soulful tone is unmatched by anyone, even "slow hand" Eric Clapton. Really enjoyed this review and your comments about escaping or hiding from feelings and pain in life. I bbeen through a period of life when I was emotionally frozen and spiritually dead. It wasn't depression just burned out from job and nightmare relationship. Emptiness was the base emotion, anyway came through that dark phase and have moved forward leaving negative thoughts behind. No Prozac just getting in touch with what was real and worthwhile in life. Okay sorry for Dr.Phil moment. No complaining from me because I don't want any drama with big, big, big boxer lawyer. I'm sure when YOU wer single YOU had "contacts"and were more "multicolorful" than the rainbow. Hey PF fan I seen Roger in Toronto Pros and Cons Tour I'm from Pittsburgh Pa and was working in a couple Steel Mills in Canada at the time, Me Personally my favorite concert was The Animals Tour in Ohio, They came to Pittsburgh on my birthday! yes, I watched both versions, my opinion is that the pulse's one is unbelievable from the "sound" and "light show" levels, it is the perfection, but the second one is at another level of intensity, there, there is their history made of conflicts and complicities, great reaction

Maybe I've said it before but there are two guitar solos that I consider to be the greatest of all time. David Gilmore's solo in Comfortably Numb and Eric Lifeson's solo on Big Money . Others may have a different favorite ...and that's fine. But these two solos send me into the heavens and define a period of my life that was free and good. PK

Sorry, did you mean Alex Lifeson from Rush? If so, I love him too. But my favorite solo of him was a little different, it's from The Garden, the last track on their last studio album, Clockwork Angels, if you haven't already listened to that, please have a listen to the full album sometimes. IMO it's so great and the best studio album to end a discography ever.
I have to say everything gets better with age, or most things. THat doesnt meant there are no reasons to like one over the other, but anyone over 30 can tell you, art can only be improved with age. Experience beats raw talent every single time.
The Pulse had a better solo, But all of them together is priceless. I saw the in the 80's for the first time. Then Roger a few time solo . The were something special together

Personally i think everything worked out for the best, a collection of musicians progressing to the next level to bring us the the most epic music ever. :)

I'm a long-time Pink Floyd fan as well and it struck me the same as it did you when I saw this version. I remember we tried so hard to get tickets to go to this event it was sold out so fast! My opinion this is the only way Comfortably Numb should be played David gilmour's one of my favorite human beings he's a very generous and generous human being I like to sometimes he's public with his family on TH-cam
Both versions are great but my favorite is taken from the actual wall tour. There is a version of it on TH-cam. Seeing Gilmore playing up on a balcony area in the corner with the wall built is iconic
I personally think that Pulse is my preferred version. Having said that, given the history of the band, the Live 8 performance has a power all of its own. It also sounds incredible, given that they hadn't performed together for about 25 years, and would have had limited rehearsal time.

I think Gilmour's closing solo on the Live 8 version is better than the one from Pulse. He just gets on with it instead of hanging around waiting for the lights to change. I think the simpler arrangement also shows Nick Mason's value to the band. I also like Roger Waters' own live versions of this song, whoever the guitar player happens to be. Maybe these days Dave Kilminster plays Gilmour better than Gilmour?

When I saw them live for Delicate Sound Of Thunder I was transported to another world. Then I saw them again in The Division Bell tour. Not as good without Roger Water's animation but still amazing.
