This is terrific! When I was in college in the 80's and living in the dorms, many of us had a small cooker/hotpot like this which was a common staple for college students. You could purchase them cheaply at places like Kmart, and students loved them as it was perfect for cooking Mac and Cheese snacks during the late night when the cafeteria was closed.
Years later I tried to find one for my nephew who was entering his freshman year, and I couldn't find them anymore. For reasons I can't fathom, they seem to have gotten out of vogue.
It's great to see another variation is available, and with updated technology and higher quality. I'm going to grab one and keep it in my travel kit. It's nice to be able to make something cheap and easy on the road instead of having to eat out all the time on business trips.
Yeah i see this as a dorm or dorm like product or if you are spending a lot time in hotels and don't want to pay the restaurant prices this would be great to heat up a pack of ramen or some different ready to go dish.
I used one of these cheap aluminum hot pots in college for boiling water, making Ramen, and using it like a vaporizer in the dry winter months. Agreed, I haven't seen one in years after I burned mine up.
I had something similar when living in the barracks in the Army. As an NCO ( Non Commissioned Officer) I had a private room which allowed me certain privileges- a small coffee pot, a “Stinger” {a little electric coil for heating water}, and finally found something close to one of these. It was good for when the Mess Hall wasn’t open and I was hungry. A can of Dinty Moore beef stew or Chili (No Beans) with some crackers went a long way for comfort!

Might be ok for my overland rig, but I would never use it at home. I already have an electric lunch box in there that does a phenomenal job heating/ slow baking, so I guess this could pair well with it

My wife and i travel a lot, and in a lot of places there's no kettle (I know, you could use a saucepan). Or, if you're in just a hotel room with no kitchen, this would be perfect. Or... when I'm car camping, I bring a Jackery 1000W generator. Plug that baby in there and you don't have to start a fire to heat water (although I always start a fire anyway!).
Even a little Jackery would probably struggle with the amperage draw of that little kettle!!!😂

If it had an onboard battery that you could charge off a USB cable or something to that effect then I think it would be a lot more useful for what I'd want it for (camping/hiking, preparedness, etc). As it stands, it's a neat and novel form factor but I don't really see myself using such a thing. Cool idea, though. Hopefully it evolves in the future.
It's 500W. I have a battery pack the size of a car battery and it can only do 300W max. Not sure it could be "onboard".
@@tinymetaltrees That's fair. It's more of a hope that the tech can evolve or be optimized in such a way as to make such feasible more than anything.

This isn’t really what I would think of as camping gear but it’s definitely an interesting product. It would be great to have at work where I have no cooking ability. Something like this would mean I could have a hot lunch every day and not have to go out for fast food
yeah it looks great and would be ideal for someone who spends time in hotels but at home most people have all the things (separately though) to do what this does, (2nd but) but would be great also for young'ens going off to college and may run off a bigger power bank so would be good for car campers too, so good in my opinion thanks for doing all these reviews

I was daydreaming of running it off that USB generator twig-stove. This is more like a tiny crock-pot. I think you might be able to find one marketed like that for a lot less than one marketed like pricey outdoors stuff.

It's perfect for EV car campers who have a 120v socket in their vehicles or anyone who car camps with at least a 500w capable power bank/"solar generator" like an Ecoflow. I'd also imagine it's nice for RV folks who don't want to vent their RV everything they run their gas stove, such as boiling water for coffee on a cold morning. While there are cheaper electric hot pots on the market the Joulle's form factor and automatic modes are unique. Based on your assesment of "quality" I may get one and give it a try in my wife's EV next time we car camp. Thanks!
Hi Ernie, Thanks for the review! I think it would be helpful to mention the power draw (500 watts?), as some solar generators could support that. It’s similar to a Birko water heater.
I drive a truck for a living, and o think I'm going to have to get this vs. having a microwave for heating up coffee water for my pour over, which is way way better than truck stop coffee
Could you test it with a Jackery or Bluetti? I’m interested to know if the power usage spikes over the 500 watts you mentioned?

Oh, that would fit into my case suitcase 🧳 much better than my current 1.7 liter one does now because hand is a strap.
Could be useful for tourism in general if you stay in hotels or such. Even as a bicycle tourer or Camino pilgrim, just stop at a cafeteria or whatever and plug it in to start cooking. Make quick noodles for lunch, a nice long coffee for breakfast/the road, or the cherry on top - popcorn for chilling out and watching a tv show or reading a manga.
How many watts. Could you plug into a bluetti?

I will check to see if they offer a 220-volt version that Beautiful Bride may use here in the Philippines. This unit might be a hard sell in other countries in our region. For example: Japan uses 100 volts AC. The big stickler is that half of Japan uses 60-cycle power while the other half uses 50-cycle power.
Never found the 115 volt outlet on my backpack. Could you maybe tell me where it is? I have looked everywhere.

I want to like it i really do but as other comments id want it with a rechargeable lithium battery, the concept is great just would love to see it as portable. Curious on the clean up side, would be good if had removable insert like a rice cooker

Truck Driver here … and I want this for my Truck but how well does it pour? I envision using it to boil water for my AeroPress Keto Coffee and Teapot mostly and don’t want it dribbling water all over when I pour the hot water. The popcorn option will be used too. Thanks for the Review!!!

Can I plug this into my Jackery?
Would be great for a boat or an RV where electricity is available (from a generator, a hefty inverter of shore power) but space is limited. Obviously for single person use only.

The cable needs to be pretty thick.
As a Brit, I'm well used to electric kettles, but with 240V AC.
Mine is 3kW, which is about 13A but would be about twice that for US voltages, as you'd need twice the current for the same power
And our electric kettles will boil 2 US cups in about one minute.
Damn shame they don't do a camping version of that! Popcorn wild camping 👌
Imagine popping that corn out in the wild….bears smell that and you better be hiding in a bear proof trailer or tent.

There are bears and cougars in the uk but are easy to avoid. Just don't go to those clubs.
YT features tutorials on how to make popcorn with a Trangia. It seems to be quite easy. With a regulated gas burner it should be possible after a little experimenting. I did not try it though as I am not a big fan of popcorn. Come spring I might try it anyway with stoves I have just for the fun of it.

Have you seen the Lofi stove? Small titanium electric wood stove. I have the kickstarter unit. Haven't given it the proper test yet. They ha e cooked with sheep dung. They are open for public sale now.
How Much Is It??
This might actually work outdoors. I have a buddy who goes glamping with his EV, and he says he can run anything off the cars power outlets that are built into the vehicle. So perhaps it is suitable for the great outdoors, as I see more an more electric SUVs and trucks on the market each year. Also more people are going with camping with bigger and bigger Jackery type power boxes. So for glamping or even just a back up in the truck on days out, maybe a good tool.
OK I know it is not hiking before some purist dives down on me from above.
I've got a cheaper one I travel with. Nice to have if your traveling and want to be cheap.
Obviously designed for electrical power in civilized territory, not camping. Yes, some camp sites have power. Popcorn is a great idea!
Could be handy for traveling when a restaurant is not available.

If you do it right. The secret for fuel stoves appears to be pour in oil, add two or three test kernels, after they pop add the rest. Don´t be greedy and don´t use an amount of kernels exceeding the capacity of the pot after popping. Bon appetite.

@@maxlutz3674 Thanks for the reply. 👍I don't use heat exchanger pots yet because I'm afraid they would melt if you don't add water. Glad to hear that it is still possible to use them for other stuff than just boiling. Maybe I' ll get one next year.
@@Eichhoernchenschreck You are welcome. The risk of melting the pot is there when you run the burner on full power. For purposes other than boiling water you need to adjust heat in the low to medium range. Alcohol burners don´t have that risk.
Why not just buy a small induction hob?

It seems like a solution in search of a problem. A random pot and a kitchen stove can do these things and more. Moreover, a bed of coals or a backcountry stove can do the same without being tethered to an outlet. 🤷🏻♂️
