    Glad to see I'm not the only one that over complicates things from time to time. That cylinder comes out without removing any panel or plastic, just poke a small pick up into the hole under the cylinder (releasing the tab), then turn the key to the left and pull the cylinder out. :)

      Over complicating is the story of my life! I couldn’t squeeze myself into position enough to see it so that why I had everything removed as well. Thanks for the comment, cheers!

    Good video. Thanks! I only have one key and it's very smooth and requires a jiggle.
    The one thing I'll miss after replacing it is being able to pull my key out to unlock the glove box while still running.

      Ha I had a fox body mustang years ago with the same issue. It was convenient at times though! Thanks for the comment.

      @@wrenchops719 My dad had an old work van, Ford I believe. Used to pull the key out and dig in his ear going down the road. 🤣

    Thank you for this video! I will have to replace the entire column as the cylinder is not only missing but the aluminum housing for the cylinder is completely broken. After seeing your video, I think it'll be a breeze.

    great vid Do you know if you can rekey the new one to the old key? for the door lock

      Jeff I believe you could rekey the new cylinder. I know if you search around you can find a complete set. It was something I was looking into as well, I’ve found a few sets for around 180 dollars. Local locksmith said they could do it but I’d have to wait about three weeks.

      Does the key insert fully into the cylinder?

      Do you have tilt steering on yours? Many possibilities as to why it’s locked up. You can try moving the steering wheel left to right, I’d suggest spraying some electronic cleaner into the cylinder followed by some oil such as WD40 and cycle that several times see if you can break anything up. If you have an automatic transmission be sure the gear selector is fully in park. Even on my XJ sometimes if I don’t push it forward all the way I can’t remove the key from the cylinder, listen for that click though. If all the basic stuff still prevents you from moving forward you have options, get violent or call a locksmith. On your own behalf take a small mallet and tap the cylinder a few times and see if that’s dislodged anything. Excessive force is not required just a few slight to medium blows, goal is to dislodged not destroy. Between strikes might utilize the electronic cleaner, oil and moving the steering wheel up/down, left & right. Hopefully it’s something simple for you.

    How did you bypass the SKIM/ SKIS system? Sorry if I missed something.

      @wrenchops719  ปีที่แล้ว

      Rick I believe mine doesn’t have that system honestly, just swapped out the cylinder & was good to go.

    Ok, I’m confused. How does this work with the skim? I changed mine for another barrel because the key kept falling out while I was driving but the engine won’t run. It will start but it turns straight off again and the key light on the dash comes on 🤔

      To be honest I’m not certain, you might have another problem with the anti theft system. I was fortunate to do a direct replacement with no issues.

      @@wrenchops719 thanks I found out the skim module is located in the plastic part of the key and that is read by the ring around the ignition. I was able to get a locksmith to dig the module out of my old key and fit it into a new one so the key could be read, allowing the car to run.

    I did this exactly like you said and my jeep started in ran for a few seconds and then stopped so I had to put the old ignition so under back in. I used AIP electronics partnumber SW2146

      Karen, what year Xj do you have? You may have the SKIM module. This is the large outer piece that goes around the ignition housing. Another person just encountered the same issue you were having, his locksmith was able to transfer the chip from the old key into his new one. Check out the link below

    The light flickering is part of the ignition switch problem. Power to accessories is a symptom
