Can you imagine how wonderful that would've been to look at for the first time? A moving picture? I bet the people that viewed these really got a kick out of it.
It's always good to see Blackton's early pieces, but the Theatre Optique is truly wonderful. I loved seeing how it worked and the historical, full costume, recreation was fantastic. Reynaud's story is pretty tragic, after so much mechanically and artistically, George Eastman soon put film emulsion on a strip and the movies very quickly put Reynaud out of business. He was reduced to an embittered poverty and threw much of his equipment into the Seine.

Well Reynaud's praxinoscope is based fundamentally on the same persistence of vision trick used by the zoetrope. If you look up a praxinoscope and zoetrope you will see they look very similar. There are other similar proto-animation devices like the phenakistoscope. You couldn't project them like Reynaud's theatrical praxinoscope though. Magic lantern shows and phantasmagoria existed for centuries before Reynaud, but they were more like advanced forms of shadow puppetry.
03:20 THERE IT IS AGAIN! I see that play button everywhere!!! On a Felix the cat cartoon. On an episode of Popeye. AND NOW HERE!!! WHAT ARE YOU, PLAY BUTTON HOLE!?!

Well if you look at it from today's perspective, it is quite like us discovering virtual reality, I mean it is also a great revolutionary invention :)
That's my favorite animation of 1892 to 1896. I love that this picture!
Emile Reynaud . . . This is so fascinating 🥰🥰🤩🤩

Rest in peace, Reynaud. Your work is the stuff of animation legend.
Reynard walked so that the animation industry could run.
What an incredible piece of history

Reynaud, Father of animé,
Ни слова не понимаю на английском! Но как же это интерно и удивительно! Особенно, когда сам Уолт Дисней это рассказывает!
And all explained by Walt Disney, too!
