  • In this video we are showing how we make or prepare our bonsai soil as previously requested by a viewer. Our bonsai soil is just sand from the river sieved to two sizes the coarser ones as drainage layer while the finer ones are made as middle and top layer. The middle and top layer are sometimes mix with organic fertilizers. Sometimes we use broken clay pots added to our drainage layer for moisture retaining property.

    when you repot the plants, it looks like dirt/soil that you take out. have you changed? why don"t you want any nutrient in the soil? How often do you feed and what? sorry if this is a repeat question, ou have a lot of videos to look thru

    • @BonsaiIligan
      @BonsaiIligan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For newly Repotted plants I just use plain river sand for best drainage and thus aeration to prevent root rot, especially for newly collectd (no roots) material. the feeding comes later when the root system is established. For new repots which roots are trimmed no fertilizer either, will burn the roots.

    @randysombrio3039 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    sir good day! why you say not to use fertilizer for newly collected materials..tnx...randy

    • @BonsaiIligan
      @BonsaiIligan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Newly collected materials have roots cut in them. Fertilizers can burn the cut portion even if you apply sealant. The fine white roots that will start to grow will also get burn and die off. For newly collected materials I do not use any chemical fertilizers even if they are slow release to be safe. Even organic fertilizers can burn if too much. The logic is that once the roots have been cut it is not operational yet. The tree relies on its stored energy for the meantime and produce what is necessary either new shoots or roots. But for collected items surely it is roots. It takes about a month or more to stabilize roots and get operative so it is useless to fertilize them and risky. I seen videos wherein they spread slow release fertilizers but is still risky. If you burn your roots of your collected material the first time. It will be dead, there is no second chance. The residual energy stored by the tree after being cut is not enough to power up a second chance.

      I just let them into soil for about an inch and cover back with soil. better if you can use seed box for better management. don't fertilize yet. transfer in bigger container in about 3 to 6 months.
