I was 1 of the "poors" in 2017-2018 & was required to move 🏘. My apt was purchased by some huge RE firm based in AL. You'd be surprised how much handy, common stuff a small Dollar Tree 🌳 can offer! BTW, the new owners only lasted a year or so & my old unit, 1 bed 1 bath(utilities included) was shifted 2X 2019-2021.

tbh you can buy literally all of this at Target for cheaper, and that's their problem. College kids are going to Target. Middle class adults are shopping at Target. Hell, based on what I've seen even the genuinely rich people...go to Target. The last time I went inside of a BB&B I was looking for syrup pumps because I work at a coffee shop and got to take home some of the leftover holiday syrups. Had that not been a closing shift that I was working that night I would have went to...you guessed it, Target. But BB&B was across the street. And you know what? I actually kind of regret it because those same pumps were cheaper on Amazon and would have been next day delivery.

There is a big difference in quality, though. I bought my last sheet set from BB&B - a Wamsutta set, I believe - because the last 4 sets I bought off Amazon each ripped inside a year. The cookware at BB&B is much better than anything you'll get at a discount store; I've bought both and can attest to it. Now, would I buy a $11 shower curtain liner from BB&B when I can get one at Dollar Tree for $1.25? No. It may be thinner but it's just the liner; not the actual curtain.

I can tell you that every transaction will involve a complicated and irritating coupon and a manager literally has to come (after we call them by walkie-talkie) and turn a key on the register in order to take (or not take) said coupon. While the entire line stares daggers and waits for their turn to be denied or approved. The high prices are somewhat intended to factor in the coupons and sales and the eventual move to clearance. Now most of the brands are becoming BBB store owned brands in order to manage costs. Just shop the clearance section, if at all.

Bed Bath & Beyond owns World Market, which I worked for during the pandemic. Our World Market location was shut down at the end of 2020 **allegedly** due to a leasing disagreement over something as silly as the higher ups not liking the shopping center we were in, even though we were usually their highest performing store in the state. We were always busy, always had products in demand, so many people were upset when we closed, yet the Bed Bath & Beyond down the road that's in a true dead shopping center remains open to this day and has hardly any foot traffic. I've heard of so many other World Market locations closing around the same time we did, and it seriously makes no sense to me why they would keep BB&B open and continue to lose money, but close their WM stores which are actually up to date with the times, have interesting good quality products, and a solid customer base. If they were smart they would put their funds and efforts into WM and slowly start to weed out BB&B, but clearly whoever is in charge of making decisions has their head stuck in a bucket or something...truly makes no sense to me. They're going to end up tanking not only the parent company, but all of the other chains they own.

They inherited a concept that was done better by Linen’s n Things. Their stores have remained nearly identical for 25 years. Who precisely does this cater to? You have to have a mix of fashion for apartment renting younger crowds. A lot of younger people are taking to cooking at home so demos of cookware and appliances would generate some life. Otherwise you’re walking around a dead white box that Homeplace and such were and they failed. The white clinical look does no favors, it doesn’t feel homey.

Linens n' Things used to be great. Anna's Linens was great too, they took up the 'medium size' footprint that most Dollar Stores take up, and they carried a lot of Bed/Bath/Decor stuff BB*B has, but at actually affordable prices. They had kind of a Tuesday Morning feel too. The Anna's Linens that was in a shopping center I used to work was always busy and seemed to be a great tenant, but the company went belly-up.

The merchandise is nearly impossible to make look tidy, and it only takes one of those “has to touch everything” people to ruin hours of work. Our products have gone WAY downhill and we either have things too cheap or extremely expensive: no middle ground :/ And damaged products is becoming a MUCH bigger problem.
You outlined some common problems well. Our bath section is very sub par right now…we are selling a lot of comforters and smaller baking/kitchen supplies.

There business model is completely based on that 20% off coupon. The idea is that if they suck you in for one thing at 20% off and you buy anything else (which is of course is over priced) they win. It's a strategy WalMart uses too. They draw you into an isle with a genuinely good price on a TV perhaps but if you look further and buy something you like better, they've got you. It's all really a new twist on the old "loss leader" game. But consumers are smarter than they used to be.

I hadn’t been there in about two years, and similar to your experience I noticed that my store had downsized, and had less merchandise. Although I bought something, I thought that the store had become less organized, and many of the service offices, such as the key center, or registry office had closed. I used to enjoy shopping Bed Bath & Beyond, so I hope that they can find a company solution soon.

2:42 I'm one of those people that buy stuff like this 🙃Bed Bath & Beyond use to be a good place for decorative brick a brack back in the day but not anymore. Those LED candles you saw can be found at Walmart every day for about $25 or less. (That's inflated California pricing as well) LED Fireplaces that actually put out heat can be found $75 online at Amazon without much effort (so for a little more you have a functional decoration). The real kick in the pants is that most ailing mall department stores sell the same type of decorative bath / bedding items for cheaper. I wouldn't be surprised if a super fancy trash can you were looking at could be found at a nearby dying / dead mall for $50.
The last time anyone cared about BB&B was when they would stack that 20% off coupon you got with portable air conditioners they use to stock in the stores (not sure they still have those). Those actually work out to be decent deals, but I'm not sure if they've jacked up the prices. I haven't been in a store over a decade now, so thanks for the nostalgia trip!
