This is the most beautiful, melancholy, genius piece of work I have ever heard. I am a 63 yr old man and the tears are rolling like a baby, as the lyrics hit home. How can a 13 yr old produce such an adult themed masterpiece? I am paralyzed with emotion from this song. It is certainly worthy of a Grammy!

I love her voice so much because it’s so unique that whenever you hear her, you can tell it’s her. Because she doesn’t sound like every other artist. She sounds unique. I love the raspiness in her voice.

    This is about depression, right?
That darkness that comes along once in a while, without any reason but its desire to chase you.
That feeling when you cry for help but nobody understands what you're talking about, because they can't even see the darkness.
That wish, stronger than anything else, to be someone else, better and stronger, but you're to weak to change.
And then the darkness is gone, and life is beautiful again, but you still know that it will come back, and that all your life will be an endless fight with it.
I never found a song that described my feelings better than this one.
Thank you, Grace. I feel better now, knowing that someone understands me.

Think the darkness can relate to fear - anxiety - depression - addictions - things you don't wont in your life but they keep haunting you. They are constantly lurking in the background. Luckily Jesus can give you the strength to overcome all of them - might not be immediate but it will happen.

Do believe it was Robert Johnson who sold his soul to the devil at the Crossroads for fame as the greatest guitar player. He never stayed in one place for very long because he thought the devil was chasing him. Some think it's her doubts of a career as a singer after she found herself in a recording studio surrounded by bunch of strange faces and her sister back home in school. Someone pointed out Blowing smoke in you ripped jeans is a reference to Miley Cyrus

    "Darkness Keeps Chasing Me"
    Opening my eyes
Seems like it gets harder sometimes
    Look at the skylight
Would you be mad at me if I tried running away to it in the night?
    I tried to fight
    But I'm not strong enough
    I just want you here
But I also want to be alone
    I don't know what I want anymore
    Every now and then
The darkness tries to chase me
And my legs are getting tired of running
    Oh, please don't
Please don't let it get to me
Oh, I don't want to give up that easily
But the darkness keeps chasing me
Hiding places remind me of you and I
    I wanna call you
But if I hear your voice
    I just might cry
And I don't even know what the song's about, anymore
And I don't know what I want, anymore
    Every now and then
The darkness tries to chase me
And my legs are getting tired of running
    Oh, please don't
Please don't let it get to me
Oh, I don't want to give up that easily
    But the darkness keeps chasing
    River streams down my cheeks
    Look to my right
See you're blowing smoke in your ripped jeans
Don't tell me you fell in
The darkness is already seeping through
    Oh, can't you see?
    I will be different
I'm not sure if I can do it all alone
God, I want to be different
But I'm not sure if I can do it on my own
    'Cause every now and then
The darkness tries to chase me
And my legs are getting tired of running
    Oh, please don't
Please don't let it get to me
Oh, I don't want to give up that easily
But the darkness keeps chasing me

I can never not listen to this song without getting chills. especially at 3:51 where she says "no, no, no, no please don't, please don't let it get to me." There is so much emotion into the song and the way she says it and the lyrics, its just so real. and the part where she repeats herself and says "god I want to be different." is just so heart breaking. especially at her age and she's able to come up with some real and beautiful lyrics and sing them with so much emotion is so fucking powerful man

She is able to make her voice resonate with love this creates a loving energy pattern in your mind --opening your mind top the flow of love and light in the universe . In this song she is making her voice resonate with longing .Longing is a very important emotion because it purifies our mind so it can be filled with the nectar of love.
So far all her songs are intensely positive and emotional which sweeps away negative emotions and allows us to perform at our personal best (i keep them on my MP3 for work )

This...this is just something else. She almost makes this song somewhat jazzy, just letting her emotion take the song in places that defy the simple structures of a song. It almost doesn't feel like it has any sort of real song structure at all. Just her, her emotion, and her desperation to escape the "darkness", whatever that may be.
In almost ever single one of her songs I can still sense a bit of 13 year old Grace, and that's great, but here, she seems ancient. A mystical, musical being that's been around long before any of us. Just wow...

    • @WeylanYutani
      @WeylanYutani 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Can you imagine Grace singing this song 15 years from now? 30 years? 50 years? The depth and textures changing with her life and experience. Not sure why I'm even thinking about it, but this kind of travel feels built into the song. So interesting to have this be the closer of "Just the Beginning." It's a giant song.

Dyno, just imagine, the way she expresses emotion, at 19 she meets the man she loves and starts tossing those emotions into her songs. I think Beautiful Thing might be childs play compared to what may come, if the guy ever breaks her heart Taylor may look like an amateur

Dyanamite and Cal, well said. I kinda feel sorry for the boy she will eventually choose to date because the poor guy will constantly be terrified of the break-up song to come. Only half-joking.

I've never heard such a beautiful, gut-wrenching, perfect illustration of depression and the horrible places it takes you to. It's a never-ending mental war that wears people down until they can't take it anymore. I've never read anything that more brilliantly put that war into words and illustrated what it does to people. Wow...just wow.

Literally heart wrenching. Ian, have you listened to it while reading the lyrics?
      Here, try it...
      Opening my eyes
Seems like it gets harder sometimes
      Look at the skylight
Would you be mad at me if I tried running away to it in the night?
      I tried to fight
      But I'm not strong enough
      I just want you here
But I also want to be alone
      I don't know what I want anymore
      Every now and then
The darkness tries to chase me
And my legs are getting tired of running
      Oh, please don't
Please don't let it get to me
Oh, I don't want to give up that easily
But the darkness keeps chasing me
Hiding places remind me of you and I
      I wanna call you
But if I hear your voice
      I just might cry
And I don't even know what the song's about, anymore
And I don't know what I want, anymore
      Every now and then
The darkness tries to chase me
And my legs are getting tired of running
      Oh, please don't
Please don't let it get to me
Oh, I don't want to give up that easily
      But the darkness keeps chasing
      Rivers stream down my cheeks
      Look to my eyes
See you're blowing smoke in your ripped jeans
Don't tell me you fell in
The darkness is already seeping through
      Oh, can't you see?
      I will be different

    This is not just music.
    It's incredibly deep poetry.
Sometimes I feel like Graces music just runs all over my heart leaving me in a puddle of my own tears.
I connect with this song so much as a person who struggles with severe depression, and this song doesn't make me happy, it doesn't have to, because it lets me know that I'm not alone...and that I'm not the only one!
Thanks for always being there for me Grace, I could of have done bad things to myself without your songs, so you saved my life...literally

These sentiments keep getting expressed over and over again for a reason, they're true.
There was a time before Grace introduced herself to the world when I was days away from giving up. I still struggle at times, but not as much or as desperately as before, and I thank Grace for that.
She came into my life, without her ever being aware of it, and saved me, not only with her profound music, but by her example. If this child could conquer her fears and stress to embark on an artistic and business adventure that crushes many adults and stay positive and caring and giving, the I have no excuse as an adult not to tackle my own challenges.
Grace is inspirational on so many levels. She has most likely saved hundreds of people like myself across the planet without ever being aware of it.

    Lyrics:
    Opening my eyes
Seems like it gets harder sometimes
    Look at the skylight
Would you mad at me if I tried running away to it in the night?
    I tried to fight
    But I'm not strong enough
    I just want you here
But I also want to be alone
    I don't know what I want anymore
    Every now and then
The darkness tries to chase me
And my legs are getting tired of running
    Oh, please don't
Please don't let it get to me
Oh, I don't want to give up that easily
But the darkness keeps chasing me
Hiding places remind me of you and I
    I wanna call you
But if I hear your voice
    I just might cry
And I don't even know what the song's about, anymore
And I don't know what I want, anymore
    Every now and then
The darkness tries to chase me
And my legs are getting tired of running
    Oh, please don't
Please don't let it get to me
Oh, I don't want to give up that easily
    But the darkness keeps chasing
    Weather streams down my cheeks
    Look to my eyes
See you're blowing smoke in your ripped jeans
Don't tell me you fell in
The darkness is already seeping through
    Oh, can't you see?
    I will be different
I'm not sure if I can do it all alone
God, I want to be different
But I'm not sure if I can do it on my own
    'Cause every now and then
The darkness tries to chase me
And my legs are getting tired of running
    Oh, please don't
Please don't let it get to me
Oh, I don't want to give up that easily
But the darkness keeps chasing me

I am completely and utterly stunned by Grace's talent. As a veteran record producer who has worked with world class artistes and knows how rare absolute talent is, I can safely say that Grace is the most talented young artiste I have ever heard. To play so well at such a tender age is rare. To have such a soulful, recognisable voice as well is even rarer. But combining these with an ability to write incredibly good songs, way beyond her years, makes her totally unique in the talent stakes. Contemporary pop has become soulless, selfish, over processed and formulaic more now than in any other era. Grace is a massive breath of fresh air and has renewed my faith in young, original talent. Keep going kid and don't let anybody change what you naturally do and are doing so, so well!

fuTuRo Media I also think Grace is unique in that fame is way down on her list of motives. She creates because she wants to give something to people whether its song they can escape in or one that they use to heal. What matters to this intelligent, kind young lady is that you find something you need in her music. I honestly don't think she fully understands how much her fans appreciate how much she seems to care.

After watching Grace Vanderwaal on TH-cam Porcess of writing " So much more than this" and "Is confidence in you" I am so confidence that Grace is a genius. She is so mature that she is more mature than a lot of adult. She knew exactly what she is doing and I am so confidence Grace is Grace and no body else. Her 4 songs in AGT when she is 12 is amazing enough and in just one year she has mature and improve so much Grace is heading to be a super star nothing can stop her now. I don't worry her ability at all.

    • @Hypermarlin
      @Hypermarlin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Agree all above. As said above, Grace's 2016 output under AGT pressure, the four songs plus her informal catalogue, and then in 2017 we have 14 original tracks on the CD, each one first rate. In 28 and 14 years respectively she'll be as old as Sia/Taylor Swift are now, respectively. Just think of what is yet to come from this genius. That's just her songs. She'll be changing the world for the positive, with her character leadership too, along the way.

Today I received my copy of Grace's album, "Just the beginning"(signed copy from her store) and ripped the CD onto my phone (MP3 at highest quality 320kbps). I have had the entire track list on loop all day long, listening with quality headphones of course. The sound quality is just amazing. I can hear Olivia singing in the background in one of the songs, birds chirping, and all of the subtle details that Grace has included for our listening pleasure. I wonder how many dry eyes there were in the recording studio during this recording. I seriously wish I could have been in the recording sessions to see the reactions of the people there to Grace gifts. I'm guessing even the professionals were frequently stunned, emotionally overwhelmed, and awd by Grace's outpouring of exquisite art.
Grace's clear and strong expressions of relatable raw emotions are breathtaking. Her lyrical poetry, the hundred shades of color, texture and emphasis she uses is stunning. Her command and the impact of her vocal nuances is sharp, pointed and piercing.
Grace's artistic intuition is beyond incredible. Her genius in taking a perception, build a wonderful song out of it, and then act out the song brilliantly, all within a few days, or even hours, all by herself, with pen and notebook...it's like nothing we've seen before.
Grace must have learned a lot in a previous life. She must have practiced long and hard in heaven before coming down and out to share with us. All our journeys are made more enjoyable and less lonely because of it.
Her voice continues to deepen, Her support grows. Heaven knows what goodness has in store.

DKCM is going to be an all time cross generation classic though so I guess they'll all catch up with Grace eventually

      That was great, Ben!
I love how Grace's music, in this case one song, can inspire so much deep contemplation and discussion among adults. Seriously, this is another amazing accomplishment for Grace. Do you think anyone over the age of 13 is having a serious discussion about Jacob Sartorius' songs (assuming he even had a hand in writing any of them)? I doubt it.
I'm assuming you guys have also checked out, or already own, the two bonus tracks available on the Target version of the album? "Hope for Change" is right up there with Darkness for me. It's not as emotionally evocative as Darkness, but it's such a mature and well fleshed out song. It pains me that more people aren't going to hear it or "Lungs" with its trippy Radioheadesque vibe. If Grace's sophomore album is anything like these three songs I'll need to take a sedative before listening to it to make sure I survive the experience.

Mark I got the original 12-track from local Amazon, the 14-track Target (mail order from Borderfree, on the way arriving tomorrow), and the 16-track Japanese release (arrived) so yes, got the full works. The Japan version has the complete Over the Rainbow (around 30 seconds more than the N-Box ad, nah-nah-nah strummed outro) and another instance of IDKMN perhaps for local JP fans that did not discover her at the time of Perfectly Imperfect. Excellent all around. Like your reference to sedatives for the sophomore. Can't begin to think how her music will evolve.

I like to think that every major producer and super star has a copy of this album. Right now they are freaking out on how they are going to hold onto to their fan bases when the world starts to listen to this masterpiece. I like to think Grace’s team has already received not less than 1000 calls on artists wanting to collaborate and have their name attached to her work. Because it’s not a matter of if she will become a huge mega star but just a matter of time. If they heard this album they are like fuck what do we do. Jump on board that’s what we will do. If we can’t beat her join her. Reply what do u think?

This song literally saved my life. I was in a very dark spot. I was going to end my life, and then I recieved a notification for this song. I played it, and I am still here today. It was just the song I needed. Grace has inspired me ever since AGT, and she continues to inspire me everyday. It is because of her that I am persuing my dreams of becoming a musician just like her. If it wasn't for Grace VanderWaal, a 15 year old boy would not be writing this right now. So thank you Grace. You have saved my life. You are my hero!

Grace will be worth watching for the next 40 years, each year we will expect her to outdo the year before. We all have people in our own lives who are waiting for us to do something they think we are capable of doing. Most of our admirers quietly sit on the sidelines watching us and we don't know they're there but they are there

This song touched my heart so much, it made me cry. I was visiting my home country after my sister gave birth, and we were going back home. It was a connected, 2-part flight, and I didn't, at all cry, like I usually do. On the second flight, I was going through the music section of the plane, and this was one of the only songs I hadn't listened to. I put my headphones on, and I don't even know what happened, but I just started crying when Grace sang 'I wanna call you/ but if I hear your voice,/ I just might cry.' And it really hurt, since I wasn't in an emotionally stable area.

The movie / video could be sponsored by Kleenex for sure. I used up my whole stock with the music alone.

No, please, no. Why muck this personal communication between Grace and the listener with some movie director's notions in some movie plot. Just listen to the song and be grateful.

Sooooooo, you never in any movie, just hear music being played that fits the mood of the scene. Please do not watch Guardians of the Galaxy, you'll just hate it.

Back again and again. So haunted by this song. It really is so dam good. She doesn’t get a Grammy nod for this something is wrong. To me this is the A Team on steroids. She just kills it! Wow!
