"Darkness Keeps Chasing Me." Such a depth! Please, don't ever think it is a "downer," as some people tell you. This song is so real. It allows people to feel, and feel it all. We all feel like that at times, especially artists. To feel and to express it all, the way it is, no matter how dark, is not a "downer." It is freedom. And to hear this song performed so beautifully, emotionally, and honestly, as you did here is a true gift.
Oh, wow. I watched that video and wondered why you wanted me to see it. Now I noticed the last words in your comment "t-shirt speak" and immediately went to see the video and noticed the t-shirt. "Freedom" WOW!!! Thank you.
I was surprised to see Grace VanderWaal in NPR. But in the end, it was a pleasant surprise to see how I can connect with her. She seems very mature. She has a beautiful voice and she's a true artist :)
This girl can be compared to nobody. She is a force of pure, raw, talent. To be told your song is a “downer” is nonsense, it’s real, relatable and showcases such mature writing skills at a young age. The future is bright for this one
I'm 26 years old and it's so refreshing to hear someone with such a mature voice at that age. And I love love love Darkness Keeps Chasing Me. That song gave me chills just from her voice alone and then I actually listened to the lyrics and was taken aback. What a force to be reckoned with. No bells or whistles just pure talent!
I still get chills every time I listen to Grace singing Darkness Keeps Chasing Me. Maybe 'listen' isn't the right word - you 'experience' Grace's music.
i was blown away by her performance of DKCM.....heartfelt/heartwrenching, & it hits you like one is punched in the gut.....awesome rendition with just her GOD-given voice, & a guitarist (a good one) as accompaniment.....Grace, i love you to the moon & back.❤️🤗😍...GOD bless you abundantly!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 an ardent 63 year old fan here in 🇨🇦.....
I kind of feel like the entire music industry needs to form a protective barricade around this young woman. She is already better than a lot of world famous musicians and I cannot wait to see what she is going to do in the future
She' needs to be barricaded from people like Max Martin · Lukasz Gottwald who basically wrote a majority of the pop songs we hear on the radio today, and why it seems like all the music sounds the same, and is crap. Look them up on wiki for the songs they've written and the performers they've worked for. It will surprise you!
Don't see that happening. She has been asked, given the terrible choice, what she'd be giving up, writing or performing. She said performing. She has also very strong ideas about what things in life are worth pursuing, and chasing fame is not at the forefront.
first song: "Yeps she's good, let's hear more since i don't have anything to do"....last song : "She changed my life touching me in my deepest feelings * crying*"
Here I am - a middle-aged man who has completely given up hope for popular music, on a whole. Then, out of nowhere, here comes this 12-year-old who CRUSHES a televised talent show. That got my attention. Just a couple of years later, she is still writing incredible songs that are somehow bare, raw, and simple while at the same time being completely genius-level. For the first time in a LONG time, I am excited about a popular music artist. And this star is just beginning to rise. Keep going, Grace, and don't let anybody mold you!
@@Ms-K-w2x you are an annoying and irritating pig. Don't you have a life than trolling a talented child. But I guess you'll be always an irritating and annoying pig that you are.

@@Ms-K-w2x All true, but judging others by their predecessors' missteps is both misguided and extremely foolish. So she signed to a Sony-owned label. So did Front 242 and they cranked out two incredible albums under their umbrella... in the same year. Don't judge a musician by their label-mates. You could miss out on some amazing music, that way.
Found her by accident yr or so ago working up X's and Oh's for our ukulele club. What a surprise/pleasure/treasure/unexpected treat! Have become a big fan, too. Makes an old jaded rocker like me smile and slow down a little, also.
Mutlu Sarıtaş Umm....what if she just continues to put out great music? 😂🤷🏻♀️ She's successful because she's authentic and writes her own music so I doubt her, or her label/management would ever change that. What makes you think she would ever not write/co-write her own lyrics? You must not have much faith in her if you think she's ever gonna lose what makes her style raw lmao
Mutlu Sarıtaş That's cool. 👍🏻 Grace's music will evolve because she's gonna grow up and change as a person and an artist, and I'm here for it. I'm not sure why we're even having a debate, but okay. Have a nice day! 😊
light and rebellion, at 61 years old I love Graces music and hope she continues to grow musically, what I think is funny is you think there's still "Album's", I came from a different generation in which Album=Vinyl not downloads...lol
Mutlu Sarıtaş you base your opinion which you share alot on Grace's video's,on your negative outlook on today's youth Grace is all about positivity and being the best you Not what others perceive So I believe like most Grace fans she will stay that way ,accept yhe positive attitude and leave your negative attitude to those who like to be controlled by the Machine
@@Ms-K-w2x Aside from the fake instruments thing, you're basically just describing recorded pop music of the last Century. Actually, artists of the past /wanted/ to sing about sex and drugs but they had to sell out and keep a clean image, disguise the true meaning of their songs behind sanitized lyrics in order to inoffensively keep selling records. The first radio hits-turned-record-sales by female singers were written by an old man lyrically exploiting the romantic ideals of young girls, lol. Remember Beach Blanket Bingo (think about what that name means, lol)? Marilyn Monroe? Janice Joplin? Madonna? Debra Paget? Joan Jett? Leslie Uggums? Celine Dion? Billy Holliday? Nothing new under the sun.. , this generation's problems are not new. Just evolved. But the same goes for this generation's virtues.
This is an emmy award song, who else can put lyrics like this in to a song that has become iconic savior for so many of mental health challenges, what a genius!
If there was ever someone who was completely 100% cut out for a certain direction in life, it's her. I mean you have to factor in her age , which makes her singing/songwriting THAT much more incredible. She is hardly a high school student, yet she appears so well reserved in how she is carrying herself. Very Passionate and is FULL of heart and soul which shows every time she opens her mouth. You can't teach someone to be that way. She's truly a gem!
Absolutely right, with one small correction. This was recorded a year ago March, she wasn't in high school yet. Which makes it even more impressive, of course.
Man she’s gonna go far. To be this talented and successful at only 14. Her lyricism and melody writing already great for her age and as long as she works on it she could become great period
I love it at 12:40 when Grace catches herself starting to sing the original lyrics, corrects herself and then just laughs it off. A true professional. Can't wait for the new music
All this high pitches, melodic rhythm, angelical voice coming from her will live in our hearts and our soul forever. It is now immortal and cannot die. If a song writer can do that. That is a divine intervention. Amazing....
There have been 5 people I have heard in my 52 years on this planet that have raised the hairs on the back of my neck from their voice. This very young lady is one of them. Get ready world, she has so much to show us.
Allie Sherlock is another one. She's not got the same attention as Grace does but she will soon. Allie also writes and sings and plays with abilities beyond her 13-14 years. Her vocals r also astounding as is Grace's
Oh That was so Amazing! Tears when She sang Darkness keeps chasing Me. Right when You think She couldn't get any better, She does this and Blows Your Mind 😲. Thank You Grace. That was Awesome! 👍💜
See and hear and feel the depth of understanding...Grace is. "I'm not sure if I can do it all alone God, I want to be different But I'm not sure if I can do it on my own" An ideal setting for her as a venue bringing to the fore all her depth and personality.
Her genius is her imperfections, it's what drew us to her . Always allow it to be apart of her creative endeavours and she'll make her own huge imprint on American music.
I was just looking at her Instagram and her new songs, her development is INCREDIBLE. she changed so much but that also shows how much then contract with agt built walls around her talent and creativity. Loved her back then and now!
There are plenty of artists who can make you feel “something”, but this girl can crush the heart of a stone cold killer. She already exceeded the previous best at that when she was 12 with songs she wrote herself. Phenomenal.
This girl made .e hold my breath when she sang on the tent show for her 1st time and the emotion she sings with my goodness her voice is amazing and so happy for her and her success
For a 14 year old to write such deep lyrics is impressive. I am sure she will go far if she does not gets distracted over the next 10 years. Also she can definitely control her vocals very well.
Wow this is the best Tiny Desk Concert ever. I'm sure people are saying she is so good for 14 yrs. old but if you just forget about her age you will see that Grace is just awesome period.
wow... I watch a lot of different new musicians as a musician and a teacher... but that is some talent right there... possibly to go down in history? hopefully we get to see her around for a long long time
Chung Junwoo I believe she's going to be doing this the rest of her life. For sure she's going to be famous and well-known. I just hope that she doesn't get changed by the music industry.
This is my favorite Grace performance of all time! Just her and Melissa is an intimate setting! The picture and sound are superb! While I wholeheartedly agree with that, it cannot be denied that there is some kind of power within Grace that makes me heal and feel good about myself when I hear her sing. I believe she has real magic in her.
She always reminds me of an elf. Reading up what her middle name means (Avery, counsel of the elves) would have given me goosebumps, if I hadn't already had them from listening to her.

Grace, all of us have the darkness chasing us from time to time. It's good to sing it, say it and let everyone know it's okay. It's okay not to be 100% happy all the time. It's the human condition and maybe, if it starts in a song, it will become okay to say and give to those who are having emotional difficulty. Wonderful song, wonderful message, wonderful young lady.

Thank you for hosting Grace at the Tiny Desk. As someone who has followed her closely since her very first appearance on AGT, I can attest to how far she has come and how grounded she has remained. She has great songwriting chops (her strength) for someone so young, and her vocals continue to improve, though she retains the rawness and cutting edge that she has always demonstrated. I hope she will continue to pursue her dreams with passion and energy, and will continue to receive the guidance and support of her family, friends, and professional colleagues as she develops into the artist she wants to be.

This girl can be compared to nobody. She is a force of pure, raw, talent. To be told your song is a “downer” is nonsense, it’s real, relatable and showcases such mature writing skills at a young age. The future is bright for this one
I can not believe how much her whole presence has changed! She's def a star in the making
She may be beyond that idea of a star...
She's all ready a star in my ears.
Grace is always the best acoustic....
John Smith so much better!
Agreed.
Okay she’s the artist we need ❤️❤️❤️
I'm 26 years old and it's so refreshing to hear someone with such a mature voice at that age. And I love love love Darkness Keeps Chasing Me. That song gave me chills just from her voice alone and then I actually listened to the lyrics and was taken aback. What a force to be reckoned with. No bells or whistles just pure talent!
That is how I reacted to this song.
I was thinking what an awesome job she did singing this song, then saw your comment. Best live version I've heard from her....
My biggest comment here would be if this or the MTV video is better, either way, they are both WOW good.
I kind of feel like the entire music industry needs to form a protective barricade around this young woman. She is already better than a lot of world famous musicians and I cannot wait to see what she is going to do in the future
Mutlu, there are better causes that need help than this one
She' needs to be barricaded from people like Max Martin · Lukasz Gottwald who basically wrote a majority of the pop songs we hear on the radio today, and why it seems like all the music sounds the same, and is crap. Look them up on wiki for the songs they've written and the performers they've worked for. It will surprise you!
Can't see that ever happening Mut
Don't see that happening. She has been asked, given the terrible choice, what she'd be giving up, writing or performing. She said performing.
She has also very strong ideas about what things in life are worth pursuing, and chasing fame is not at the forefront.
Because the motivations of all humans are the same, right? Not so. Not by a wide margin.
Young and talented. Her voice so raw so soothing to the ear. Love.
She's ONLY 14 and yet so mature beyond her years. She's an amazing talent, so natural. You can see how she feels the music.
first song: "Yeps she's good, let's hear more since i don't have anything to do"....last song : "She changed my life touching me in my deepest feelings * crying*"
@@Ms-K-w2x well pig. You should be on their video bashing them. But you probably are too afraid of their fan comming after you. So you pick on a talented child who you have said she has done nothing wrong to you.
@@Ms-K-w2x By the way who gives you the right to put other people sin on Grace shoulder. You must have really f**k upbringing. It just shows what a f**k up parents you got.
I don’t have hope for contemporary pop music, I do, however, have a great deal of faith in Grace. She’s a prodigy, no doubt about it.
I never get tired of listening to Grace. And a huge admiration for the mesmerizing and talented Melissa Dougherty.
Found her by accident yr or so ago working up X's and Oh's for our ukulele club. What a surprise/pleasure/treasure/unexpected treat! Have become a big fan, too. Makes an old jaded rocker like me smile and slow down a little, also.
this has got to be the sweetest voice i ve heard in my entire life
Mojodojo sweetest?
Powerful.
Her voice is so raw and beautiful. She's improved so much and has loads of passion. Can't wait to still be buying her albums in 10 years.
Mutlu Sarıtaş Umm....what if she just continues to put out great music? 😂🤷🏻♀️
She's successful because she's authentic and writes her own music so I doubt her, or her label/management would ever change that.
But the same goes for this generation's virtues.
... and the lady of the guitar is so good and is seriously enjoying this...
This is an emmy award song, who else can put lyrics like this in to a song that has become iconic savior for so many of mental health challenges, what a genius!
This live version of Darkness keeps Chasing Me was epic!
Happydays all her performences are epic ❤
A Tiny Desk Concert. You are now part of music history. Congrats Grace!
I could never forget this girl... The fact that she writes her own songs in like 20 minutes is almost unreal.. She has such an AWESOME personality!
The future of Alternative Pop is in great hands with Grace Vanderwaal. This girl is special. A true prodigy.
All of her music is special, but the writing and artistry of “Darkness” is a rare jewel.
I love it at 12:40 when Grace catches herself starting to sing the original lyrics, corrects herself and then just laughs it off. A true professional. Can't wait for the new music
She is truly, truly special. I'm not much on gods, but she has been sent from somewhere beyond what we know.
All this high pitches, melodic rhythm, angelical voice coming from her will
live in our hearts and our soul forever. It is now immortal and cannot die. If a song writer can do that. That is a divine intervention. Amazing....
She expresses herself so beautifully through her music. Awesome stuff
it's actually hard to take in how gorgeous and talented she is at the same time.
Very refreshing to hear a young artist who takes her own course well off the beaten path. Some hope for the future.
Who's the 4 others?
Ya, who are the other four?
I’m glad she hasn’t gone commercial on us. She has stayed true. That Gibson Hummingbird is beautiful, and the player does it justice.
Melissa Doherty is a very accomplished artist with a beautiful voice and guitar skills unmatched by even male players. And she is Beautiful ❤️
Oh That was so Amazing! Tears when She sang Darkness keeps chasing Me. Right when You think She couldn't get any better, She does this and Blows Your Mind 😲. Thank You Grace. That was Awesome! 👍💜
Can’t get enough of her talent❤️ so happy she’s finally here!!
See and hear and feel the depth of understanding...Grace is.
"I'm not sure if I can do it all alone
God, I want to be different
But I'm not sure if I can do it on my own"
An ideal setting for her as a venue bringing to the fore all her depth and personality.
Steven Boyd dang, that is true.
Her genius is her imperfections, it's what drew us to her . Always allow it to be apart of her creative endeavours and she'll make her own huge imprint on American music.
This remains my favorite Tiny Desk Concert of all times.
Oh wow I remember Grace on Americas got talent when she was 12 and was the last time. Her voice is so iconic. Great work and amazing song writer 😀
Damn, wasn't expecting her to be THAT good!!
Welcome!
Is Just the Beginning
I was so excited to see Grace at the Tiny Desk! She’s come a long way since America’s Got Talent and she just keeps getting better.
FINALLY!! The very same guitar octave technique used in the Beatles "Blackbird" brought back to life in the song "Darkness Keeps Chasing Me". Epic!!
I was just looking at her Instagram and her new songs, her development is INCREDIBLE. she changed so much but that also shows how much then contract with agt built walls around her talent and creativity. Loved her back then and now!
Her voice 😍
she has gotten to be so beautiful, and her vocal development oh my lord
This might be the best live version I’ve seen.
There are plenty of artists who can make you feel “something”, but this girl can crush the heart of a stone cold killer. She already exceeded the previous best at that when she was 12 with songs she wrote herself. Phenomenal.
May I like to add ... Grace reaches in yanked that heart out and return it in a better condition.. if that's possible
nam tran yes. It hurts first then it feels better.
This girl made .e hold my breath when she sang on the tent show for her 1st time and the emotion she sings with my goodness her voice is amazing and so happy for her and her success
Grace is for real. She is a special young musician. Some people sound good for their age, Grace just sounds good.
Another Fan of the Ramapo concert, apparently. ;-)
For a 14 year old to write such deep lyrics is impressive. I am sure she will go far if she does not gets distracted over the next 10 years. Also she can definitely control her vocals very well.
For anyone, regardless of one's age, it's fabulous and so much more than just impressive to write songs like Grace VanderWaal does. :)
And actually she wrote it when she was 13. If she's not a genius I don't know who is.
the greatest crossover in history
Grace is the best folk singer to come along in many many decades. God Bless Grace and peace to her soul.
Sweet , I’m glad I found this acoustic performance of Clearly , never expected her to take on that song with just guitar behind her. What pipes!!
Wow this is the best Tiny Desk Concert ever. I'm sure people are saying she is so good for 14 yrs. old but if you just forget about her age you will see that Grace is just awesome period.
The second song is a killer! She has an amazing amount of talent that is only getting stronger as she grows.
wow... I watch a lot of different new musicians as a musician and a teacher... but that is some talent right there... possibly to go down in history? hopefully we get to see her around for a long long time
Chung Junwoo ggfhjfuhfhhhibgjh
Chung Junwoo I believe she's going to be doing this the rest of her life. For sure she's going to be famous and well-known. I just hope that she doesn't get changed by the music industry.
Darkness is probably the best song I’ve ever heard in my life. Gorgeous voice.
How is this not viewed millions of times? I’m probably worth a thousand
This is my favorite Grace performance of all time! Just her and Melissa is an intimate setting! The picture and sound are superb! Grace is stunningly beautiful and the music showcases her most recent songwriting and singing! Grace is a gift to the world! She was born as the true spirit of music! I can't watch this without tearing up!
When I heard her sing DKCM on the rooftop I thought it was her best performance of this song. Now I'm not so sure. Never stop amazing us Grace.
I've been listening to Grace's music constantly since I discovered her 9 months ago. Her voice literally RESONATES with my soul! Love her!
Yes, did you see what Nina Schofield said about her?
@@Cal99ers Never heard of Nina Schofield, but I just checked out one of her reaction videos on Grace. Very nice that she appreciates Grace's music as much as I do!
@@jonihofmann3318 it's kinda cool if we can get Grace's fans to watch these reaction videos. The more people that watch them the more they will do them and that's a great way to spread the word about her
@@Cal99ers you are so on point. Grace give her soul to DKCM. She can connect with all people young and old alike. I watch ever reaction video that is about this amazing young lady.
Darkness, the first time I heard the song, I cried, and couldn't believe how deep it was.
Some one said once, not to call Grace's singing magical because magic is an illusion and there is nothing fake about her.
I feel the same way..her music touches me..
"...there is some kind of power within Grace that makes me heal and feel good about myself when I hear her sing."
Yep. I only stumbled upon her recently, but so many of her songs have made it onto my "things will be okay" playlist for that exact reason.
@@HotelPapa100 always curious what was in the parent's mind when they named her Grace Avery ? Two meaningful words that getting real
Darkness keeps chasing me give me chills... Grace 's voice is unique
WOW just WOW!!! I have not seen her for a while and she is an angel! Please do no let the music industry take away her raw talent! Let her be her!
Grace is for real. What a unique and beautiful young lady. She writes incredible music and is the real deal. No phony marketing with this super talented genuine artist. The more I see her the more obvious is her amazing talent. Wow, she really touches me.
So elegant, full of poise, talent, and creativity. The best thing music has seen in decades!
Reminds me of a young Florence, attitude/style and everything
And this week she is opening for Florence and the Machine for a few shows
I love Florence and honestly just discovered Grace. I’m equally amazed, very unique and in control of her art
@@ryannguyen8477 truly said she has an immense control over her voice and the music too .
U should hear other songs of her .
She truly is an amazing artist
Wow...can you imagine this young lady dropping by your office someday and doing this? The folks that were there got to witness something really special in person that only a handful of people will ever get to do. Color me jealous!
How is this song DKCM not on the charts at no.1, just a Fantastic guitar player Malissa and Grace's fantastic voice! Thank you NPR for noticing this genius prodigy and her amazing friend Malissa!!
Grace - You should make "Darkness" a staple in your performances. We identify with that "darkness" while still having plenty of light in our lives. Brought tears to this 60-year-old's eyes.
Beautiful!
Yes, WHEN I go see her perform, I need that song!!
"Darkness Keeps Chasing Me" is EXTREMELY powerful. The combination of lyric and her raw voice is unbelievable, like a hard punch to the gut! Can't believe it was written by a 13 year old without actually experiencing "depression" itself.
"experiencing depression" we don't know that, pray she hasn't, those singers don't tend to last long
This is the best version of Darkness Keeps Chasing Me. Sometimes simplicity brings out the best! Beautiful.
It's quite a bit faster than the original
yes, less is more............
Darkness keeps chasing me. One of the best written songs I have heard. Just about ever. She is just amazing. I'm choking up the WHOLE time I listened to this. Almost all of her songs. That voice!!!
I hope she will continue to pursue her dreams with passion and energy, and will continue to receive the guidance and support of her family, friends, and professional colleagues as she develops into the artist she wants to be.
by the way grace if you ever read any of our comments, take note, Darkness Keeps Chasing Me. you may have been told its too depressing, but there are plenty who relate to it, and it helps people bigtime to escape, everyone needs something to relate too, thats what you give, keep doing it, its worth it all day long, i'm a 62 year old man and i think your the best thats come out for many many years,
Grace...
Spread your wings Girl. The world is at your feet and your light and talents shines light in everyone's hearts. I pray that you will follow your hart
