Well , I took my Enfield out to the range today with 6 of my reloads . What a hoot ! After the " fear Factor " it was not as bad to shoot as I thought . My .303 and 25-06 kicked worse ! Were going out again tomorrow with 12 cartridges . Even Wifie loved it ... I gave her 2 shots outta 6 . At 50 yards , we hit the target ??? Little high and left . Thanks for your wisdom , couldn't have done it without your help .

I'm currently experimenting with a .58 Lee REAL bullet, the top "fin" mic's out at .588/.590. However my snider is a Birmingham made commercial conversion of a Pattern '58 naval short rifle with a tight bore. The rear sight has been left in its original position and not relocated back by the shoe.
I've been binging these over and over for years it feels and I finally got my hands on a MkIII short rifle! Super exited to start making these following your guide, I just messaged Martyn about getting myself a .600 mould. Looking forward to spring!

This is THE best series on Empire firearms from the Brown Bess to the Lee Enfield yet to be put together . I have owned and shot most of the firearms shown in this series with exception of the Baker. After a ten round rapid fire in a farmers field with my Martini short lever 1872 I made the mistake of grasping the barrel past the breech and got a fried palm soothed with copious amounts of burn ointment .
I found your channel last night looking up reloading stuff for the lee navy somehow I gotta say, most of the guns you do are outside the timeframe of my interests, but your videos are incredible. The attention to detail and information in uniforms, reloading, events, and the great editing and video quality are fantastic. I love the packets you put your ammunition in, and collection of uniforms. At some point it would be fun to do the same

K Grant I'm in the UK. Yes, I could own an historical firearm but I can't afford it and you need a number of licences to reload, if you can at all! It already is fairly compelling. Just not sure the missus would appreciate me disappearing off with another new hobby that will bankrupt me!
Reading into it a bit more, obtaining a shooting licence in the UK isn't too bad if you're a member of a club. Having the rifle at home is a nightmare (very secure storage required including bolting to the wall and inspections, separate compartments for ammunition and rifles) and it seems as though there are limits on how much you can own in terms of powder/primers, etc as well as storage directions there. You also have to show your firearms certification when buying supplies. I understand these laws and understand why they are there, I really do. I would like it if it were a bit easier, though! Rifle shooting has fascinated me for years but it's a very expensive prospect over here!
Hi Duncan. I own a large collection of historical guns and am also in the UK. Sadly, as you have found, being able to actually shoot them here is a real pain in the arse. Same basic regs as owning and keeping shotguns. Mine all just hang on the walls, which is a shame given most are in prime condition. As long as you dont shoot them they are "Obsolete Calibre" antique "curios" so you dont need a licence or special storage. You can pick a good 3 band Snider up at auction for around £600 and they come up in militaria auctions regularly, as do the two band short rifles. The cavalry carbine versions are a bit rarer. All seem to go for around the same price. Check out auctions on The Saleroom website. Lockdales, Marlows, Holts and Wallis & Wallis are the best houses to watch for upcoming auctions. Be warned though....once you get the collecting bug it can get to be an expensive hobby ;-)

Hello. I want to ask wasn't the Snider System made by an American? Why didn't they adopt the same system for converting their 1861/63 Springfields in the same nominal .58 calibre? I understand that the British Empire needed a quick-fire solution to replace their muzzle-loaders with breech-loaders and thus kept the same barrel and bullet but didn't the Americans face a similar dilemma. Another question, did the Snider-Enfield's chamber have a large "throat" to accept a larger bullet than the bore?
Another great job and a perfect tutorial on how to load odd (rare) black powder cartridges.Anyone applying your techniques will be able to load ammunition that will shoot to the maximum potential of their rifle. And as you know with a BPCR the Cartridge is the key.
After watching your videos, I decided to get me a 577 Snider. It came in this weekend and after inspecting it I took it to the range. Made some ammo ahead of time. It shoot well, even though I had me eyes shut at the 1st shot. Well I hit the target at 75 yards. Now I have fire formed brass to use with the .600 bullets. Can't wait to get back out to the range and see how these perform.
Well done! I appreciate your time and effort. I've only fired my trap door Springfield 45/70 with black powder a few times. I'll look for one of those rifles in the future. Looks like a lot of fun.

Finally got it to shoot! I used a CBE 420gr .589 Bumble Bee (Thanks to Bad Ass Wallace) behind 65grains of FFG, followed all your instructions and am getting around 3inch groups at 100m. Big improvement over the 2foot groups I used to get. Thanks again for the videos, can't wait for the next, Mitch
Absolutely awesome videos on the reloading for the Snider Robert. I have been shooting .575 bullets for years now BUT I have paper patched them up to larger diameter. They shoot really decent but a larger x-ring mold would sure simplify things. I have to buy one now! Lol

That was a great video....some basic information was appreciated...the practical application and straight forward instruction was spot on. I liked the large scissors...corn meal and oh s#@t responce to the yelled spouce inquiry.
The sizing dies work well backed out 3-4 turns, when you’re using larger than standard bullets. Having fired uncountable hundreds of rounds from various Sniders since 1998, I moved away from the larger bullets in later years. When cleaning my 3-band one day, I was surprised to find a large lead ring drop out of the chamber. Close inspection of the other two that I was shooting at the time, revealed a similar situation. The .590 bullets were leaving a ring of lead where they entered the rifling. I started experimenting with other bullets, and got excellent results with the Rapine trashcan .580 hollow base wadcutter. With 70gr. of FG it would hit the small gong every shot at 200m. I filled the hollow base with beeswax, and topped the powder with cream of wheat. I also had good results with the ordinary Lee “Civil War Minie” over the same charge, but cast of a harder alloy than you’re supposed to use.
I love Canoodlian firearms enthusiasts. Especially those of the "historical" bend. I do, however, feel for their woes when it comes to some of the regulation. I think I'll be subscribing, even if I am a fan of the more modern firearms systems. (No.4 Mk II Fazalarky is my Enfield of choice)
Rob, Yes I resized them but used the Lee resizer die. The bullets that I cast from alloy are around the .588 to .591 range. I did anneal these cases once and they will take up to .585 or so I believe. I was thinking of getting a piece of rod and attempting to see if I can expand the case mouth a bit. Not sure that this will work and whether this might put too much stress on the cases. When I did an earlier casting with a purer lead mix, I found the bullet diameter was much closer to the case mouth diameter but the bullets were much heavier than the 480gr weight specified for the CBE mold. In fact, I was getting a 550 to 570 range which I rejected. Thanks.
Two of the best bullet moulds I used were my Lyman .585213 or alternately a Lee .584-488M. I dinnae think either are still made anymore. If you can find one grab it. Also my brass was Bell .577 NE cut down. By far the best brass to use and lasts for years with care.
Postscript: I reloaded them with a set of RCBS dies made to seat and crimp .585 diameter bullets. Not cheap but definately the best way to go about it.
For your wrapper process - A weighted block that is about 3/4 or so the width between the walls of the jig, with a rubber bottom can work very well for holding things snugly rather than taping. Fumbling with tape sucks. Rubber just has to be able to hold the paper, ideally without marking, and for a similar process on an unrelated project I found that common white erasers scuffed with fine sand paper made excellent feet to glue on to the block. If you wanted to get really fancy, you could probably also add a few modifications to your jig and place the string down before the paper, and tie up even faster.
I home brew beer, and filling the cartridges reminds me of priming beer bottles when I fill them. Not hard, but you've got to be accurate, and never double prime a bottle. It will go BOOM, much like a double filled bullet cartridge.
( Feb. 26/22 ) Got Magtech 24 ga brass shot shells coming . Ordered .578 boolits from JET in Alta along with cards .Hope to load 25 for Spring use .Bought the LEE dies for .577 but after watching these vids , I may not use . They were $ 200.00 after tax !
JUST an FYI, popping wet cartridges on a tray in an electric fan oven on low (just hot enough to still handle) works well. I have dried air rifle pellets in such a fashion after washing them. Also various motorcycle parts. Marital harmony can be maintained by various means, personally I just relax - the smell of her cats used to cover up any odours my stuff left! :)

The sizing dies work well backed out 3-4 turns, when you’re using larger than standard bullets. Having fired uncountable hundreds of rounds from various Sniders since 1998, I moved away from the larger bullets in later years. When cleaning my 3-band one day, I was surprised to find a large lead ring drop out of the chamber. Close inspection of the other two that I was shooting at the time, revealed a similar situation. The .590 bullets were leaving a ring of lead where they entered the rifling. I started experimenting with other bullets, and got excellent results with the Rapine trashcan .580 hollow base wadcutter. With 70gr. of FG it would hit the small gong every shot at 200m. I filled the hollow base with beeswax, and topped the powder with cream of wheat. I also had good results with the ordinary Lee “Civil War Minie” over the same charge, but cast of a harder alloy than you’re supposed to use.

Rob, Yes I resized them but used the Lee resizer die. The bullets that I cast from alloy
are around the .588 to .591 range. I did anneal these cases once and they will
take up to .585 or so I believe. I was thinking of getting a piece of rod and
attempting to see if I can expand the case mouth a bit. Not sure that this
will work and whether this might put too much stress on the cases. When I did
an earlier casting with a purer lead mix, I found the bullet diameter was much
closer to the case mouth diameter but the bullets were much heavier than the
480gr weight specified for the CBE mold. In fact, I was getting a 550 to 570
range which I rejected. Thanks.
Dan, may I ask why you are resizing the cases after firing?
Two of the best bullet moulds I used were my Lyman .585213 or alternately a Lee .584-488M. I dinnae think either are still made anymore. If you can find one grab it. Also my brass was Bell .577 NE cut down. By far the best brass to use and lasts for years with care.
Postscript: I reloaded them with a set of RCBS dies made to seat and crimp .585 diameter bullets. Not cheap but definately the best way to go about it.

For your wrapper process - A weighted block that is about 3/4 or so the width between the walls of the jig, with a rubber bottom can work very well for holding things snugly rather than taping. Fumbling with tape sucks.
Rubber just has to be able to hold the paper, ideally without marking, and for a similar process on an unrelated project I found that common white erasers scuffed with fine sand paper made excellent feet to glue on to the block.
If you wanted to get really fancy, you could probably also add a few modifications to your jig and place the string down before the paper, and tie up even faster.

I home brew beer, and filling the cartridges reminds me of priming beer bottles when I fill them. Not hard, but you've got to be accurate, and never double prime a bottle. It will go BOOM, much like a double filled bullet cartridge.

( Feb. 26/22 ) Got Magtech 24 ga brass shot shells coming . Ordered .578 boolits from JET in Alta along with cards .Hope to load 25 for Spring use .Bought the LEE dies for .577 but after watching these vids , I may not use . They were $ 200.00 after tax !

JUST an FYI, popping wet cartridges on a tray in an electric fan oven on low (just hot enough to still handle) works well. I have dried air rifle pellets in such a fashion after washing them. Also various motorcycle parts. Marital harmony can be maintained by various means, personally I just relax - the smell of her cats used to cover up any odours my stuff left! :)
