    Be very careful when extracting a "hang fire." I've had a 44mag touch-off after a full second delay. I became a believer of the 60 second rule. Wait 60 seconds after a 'CLICK' before opening the breach. It might save your fingers some time. Great videos, thanks for the groundwork.

    It appears the 3/8 in plate was angled when you fired the m193 at it. That may have been enough angling to increase the apparent thickness. Just for the scientific method I suggest making yourself some sort of bracket so that you can stand up these steel plates and they will be perfectly square. Repeatability and all that.

    The energy dissipation of the impact on an unrestrained steel plate with a piece of wood randomly positioned behind it is a considerable factor in penetration testing. It won't necessarily result in the difference between a pass-through and a crater, but it's worth improving your setup to get consistent and more reliable results. Spinning/rotating plates waste significant amounts of energy when comparing multiple calibers, velocities, etc. Otherwise your approach and sequence is pretty well done. It appears your 300 Blackout vs. 7.62 x 39mm test incorporated these setup improvements, but so other viewers are aware, the results of an unrestrained steel plate can yield drastically different results depending on the rotational velocity and shot location.

    I have heard that the 55 grain fmj would deflect off a windshield. The green tip was designed to punch through.

  • @brianwilson4861
    @brianwilson4861 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's been my experience that the 55 grain fmj will penetrate quarter inch AR500 steel while the 62 grain green tip will not when shooting identical length barrels from 16" to 20" and the target at equal distances. I only shot at 25 yards max. On any other target material I would put my money on the 62 grain green tip having greater penetration. I used to buy the green tip exclustvely when id buy ammo by the case thinking that the added weight might be a benefit at longer range and it probably is but its less accurate in my rifle. Probably because the steel penetrater upsets the concentricity of the bullet making the bullet wobble slightly in flight. So now I buy 55 grain exclusively. I shot a buck at 60 yards with a hornady 55 grain soft point in the chest and got complete penetration. There wasnt much of a blood trail but he only ran about 50 yards. I dont really consider it a very good deer cartridge but it usually beats using a larger caliber and missing the vtals. Its easier to find a deer that runs 60 yards with no blood trail than it is to find one that leaves a decent blood trail for 300 yards and stops bleeding and is still running.

    Due to the projectile being basically vaporized while grinding away at the target there is a upper Limit on how far a projectile can penetrate.
    Today a common practice to improve anti cannons is increasing the length of the projectiles

      ‼️Thanks for your great videos. As you know when you fire 5.56 or 223 at AR500 Hardened Steel under a SLOW MO camera you can see that when the bullet impacts the steel (and is stopped on the surface) the Lead Liquifies and little lead droplets 💦 splatter and all thats left is a small nickel sized pancake of lead that cooled from the Steel Plate and is paper thin that falls to the ground. I have saved a bunch of them for my home display. It seems that the bullet has to peirce through the steel before the friction and compression cause the lead to liquify and lose all its energy. Seems the steel tip and / or core just stops that from happening. Tungsten Rounds seem to do the best because steel won't liquify, but it will fragment, causing the bullet to lose all its energy and Tungsten can stay intact. Would love to see you talk about and do some testing with that. Also, with ballistics, it's not all about how much energy the round carries when it impacts the target. It's how that energy is transferred. I compare it to pulling out a stuck car. Use a chain ⛓️ with a lot of force, and it Rips off the bumper...major damage..but..BUT..use a stretchy rope, and you can use twice the force with no damage occurring. Thanks for all your work and knowledge you are sharing. 💯💯🦅🇺🇸

    Food for tough, against mild steel the 55 gr penetrates less, but against hardened steel like ar500 55gr penetrates say a lvl 3 ar500 plate whereas a greep tip wont, you actually need lvl 3+ or lvl4 to be able to stop regular 55gr

    • @fujimi715
      @fujimi715 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I've tested this as well..AR500 side plates level 3. 16in barrel..green tip stopped M193 clean through. The reason is because the tip of green tip, while considered hardened and not mild, it is not super hard. It's actually softer than AR500 steel. So the tip doesn't help it at all when going into AR500. But the tip is harder than mild steel so it helps. But the new M855A1 round the tip is harder than AR500. It's actually close to AR600/AR650. So it can punch through AR500 plates like AR500 level 3 no problem.

    Green tip ammo is a strange animal, and some say it is armor piercing, and others say it isn't!
    But the worst thing was when the AFT wanted to ban green tip from civilians because they wanted armor piercing ammo off the market! But luckily, they got their butts kicked!
    Midway has green tip 300 round quantity for $162, or $0.53 a round!
    Or you can get 1200 for $644.77, which is the same cost per round!
    But you better have the 1 in 9 or 8 inch rate of twist, else it will keyhole and not work well!
    Remember, head shots only, so they have to apply the tourniquet to the neck!!

    I am not sure why everyone makes a big deal out if green tip ammo. Per US standards this is simply a FMJ round. Basic color codings for both 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 are as follows:
    Green - FMJ Standard Round
    Red - Tracer
    Black - Armor Piercing
    Gray - Frangible with a blunt nose.
    Fifty caliber follows this same guide line but also has various other combinations not found in small caliber ammo.

    Forget where I read it, but I was prepping an urban warfare class for an Iraq deployment, and I read that max steel penetration with 5.56 is achieved at 200+M because the high speed of shorter ranges cause the bullet to fragmentate. So you want a little less than max speed to get most penetration.

The bullet passed through the plate so fast it didn't even wiggle. The wolf round made a hole big enough to put a 7.62x54 or 308 case in it for target practice with my 22lr. A 308 with a hunting round would do similar damage, I have shot 1/2 mild steel with a 308 loaded with ADI 165 Sierra Game Kings. The 308 passed through the steel hanging on chains very easy. The guy who owned the steel plate didn't believe a 308 would pass through 1/2 inch plate so easily. I hated to ruin his nice pistol set up but he asked for it. I believe the green tip would go through the 3/8” steel plate if the plate was unable to move. To much force is lost when the plate moves in the same direction as the bullet.
    If the plate was attached to your chest (as all are via strapping) and then shot your body would prevent the plate from moving backwards resulting in more velocity impact. That’s just how I personally perceive it.

    I don't quite get how FMJ would be lighter since it has a full lead core while the green tip doesn't?
    To be sure, I'm not familiar with these types of cartridges but they seem to be similar to what we use in the military though we have AP rounds instead which have a full steel core and a much higher velocity because steel is, as we all know, lighter than lead.
    Back in the day we used Tombak plating instead because fucking up the rifling isn't a problem when you have 13x as many barrels as guns.

    Need to start testing the 8.6 blackout! The next big thing if you will. Planning a lightweight 12" build -faxon has the barrels. Need to get dies and such first. Should be a 6lb rifle lobbing 338 slugs.

    • @bananaballistics
      @bananaballistics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have looked into the 8.6. I just can't seem to justify launching 300 gr 338 pills down range at subsonic velocities since they are so expensive lol. Maybe I will change my mind in the near future. That will be an awesome build though!

      @Banana Ballistics ‼️Thanks for your great videos. 💯💯🦅🇺🇸

    This is why they chose the round. However in reality the number of situations you benefit from the 7 grain penetrator is tiny compared to how often you’ll benefit from the better accuracy and performance of the 55 grain FMJ.
    It was sold to NATO successful by FN because it increased the range it could penetrate a steel helmet by like 100 yards I believe. So instead of 500 it was 600. Who the hell was taking head shots at 600 yards with iron sights I don’t know??? It’s possible but very difficult Simo Haya kept his shots around 350 meters I believe at the longest and he used irons. Also killed more men than any sniper in history.
    Ultimately I still believe SS109/M855 was a huge mistake over M193 (though we should have gone to 1/9 twist for SMK).
    However if we ever go to war against 3/8” mild steel I’ll be grabbing green tip and going to town!!!

    Switching plates is cool. But I would have loved to have seen you go back 50 yards more. Then keep doing that until one of them no longer penetrates the plate. That would have been really cool to see what the effective range is

    You need to use a m16a2 length rifle with the same 1 in 7 twist rate. That is what the m855 green tip was designed for.

  • @ericalbers4867
    @ericalbers4867 ปีที่แล้ว

    From what I understand the 5.56 NATO is designed to hit its maximum pressure and fully burn its charge in an 18" barrel. Longer barrels don't give it anymore inertia, they just add accuracy at range but still use about the same twist rate. SBR's do require a different twist rate though because anything under 18" and it's not hitting its peak pressure.
    Funny thing about those green tips: everyone acts like they're so social. I never understood all the fuss early on in my military service. We literally plinked at the range with them all the time.

    • @xrexkinect
      @xrexkinect ปีที่แล้ว

      You used them at the range because thats standard issue ammo. Why would you use one type of ammo to zero your rifle, and learn to shoot at the 500, but then use a different type of ammo if SHTF?

    • @ericalbers4867
      @ericalbers4867 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xrexkinect because the rifles we used in basic and AIT weren't the same ones we used overseas. When I joined in 2003 we were still using the A2 in basic and AIT. Overseas we used the A4, Block II for one deployment, and mk18 for the majority of the time. Even if we used one of those in AIT, it's not like you carry that exact same weapon afterward. So what you zero with in TRADOC is irrelevant.

    I would love to see some 7.62 testing. Since we all can't have fun things. I'm curious about WPA 7.62 steel cased ammo. While figuring out which of my ammo was magnetic. The core of the WPA 7.62x51 is solid metal (not lead). It's magnetic for sure, but since it's a NATO surplus round, I can't find any info on its actual construction.
