That was very entertaining, you are correct, an old device retaining its weathered look does have a charm about it. Many restoration videos show battered devices transformed into new condition, very impressive but often the natural used appearance is preferred. Enjoyed the Wessex Mount Vesuvius display too 😎
Thanks for sharing. I had a good giggle when the stove started flaming. I bought a nickel silent burner Primus from a closing down sale a while back, some young people in the house were fascinated by this unit. They had never seen such a contraption before. I cleaned it and then attempted to fire it up, all went well with a beautiful clean blue flame, suddenly there was this massive yellow flame shooting up. they all ran out of the house in terror, it was quite a funny moment. As you say remain calm and depressurize the unit it won't blow up. Still need to figure out why its doing this, possibly needs a new jet. Love these old stoves, they way better than that horrendous Panda stove rubbish that uses a wick, gives an efficiency of below 40 %, burn badly and blacken the pot, and are known to blow up in peoples faces. The older generation were clever.
Leaving bits like that in is what makes TH-cam videos worth watching! All that causes it is the jet becoming partially blocked. Just buy a pricker and give it a good clean. Many thanks for watching, please like, share and if you like the channel, subscribe!
....In today's episode, Ben sets fire to his shed!!!!!...... I really like that one Ben, want one - had a quick look on ebay, guess I'll wait until I see one at a boot market/antiques fair or whatever!!! Lovely stove and a great design all fitting in the tin.
It is quite a design and really compact too. Only fits in the tin if you follow the instructions carefully. Also an unusual burner and riser. Somewhere I have an Optimus 96 but it has the normal style of burner though I don't know if that was original to the Optimus. This one was a bargain for a fiver though!
@@BensWorkshop Yeah, your fiver bargain was a REAL bargain. I like the fact that it only fits in the tin if you follow the instructions, it adds to the charm - or frustration if you don't have the instructions!!!!
It was quite a find, but I often find interesting things at boot sales. I have quite a lot of paraffin stoves and lamps. Many thanks for watching and subscribing! (I also have to yours, following your build)
They are handy if the power goes out. I have Tilley lamps as well. If yours is a Primus (rather than a British made one) it will have a date code on the bottom which will tell you what year it was made (unless it is a fairly late one). Thanks for watching and don't forget to hit like.
Cor Blimey Ben ,, matey lucky you did not singe your eyebrows there ! .. but well done you got there in the end and mastered the little beastie .. I note everything to hand at your workshop .. Bens mancave .. hey do you keep an emergency fire extinguisher handy ? I did really enjoy seeing your enthusiasm and knowledge ....well done...many of us do not know about the dark arts of stoves and lamps ...😆
The trick is not to panic. Not sure a fire blanket would help too much as you would have hot paraffin leaking if you jut chucked on on top. Trick to remember is that yo can always let the pressure out, so make sure you have pliers or similar available if it comes to it. Can also help to try it outside first which I did not do this time, Many thanks for watching, I am pleased you enjoyed it! Please like, share and if you like the channel, subscribe!
@@BensWorkshop It is one of the most precious models of the Primus company, it was manufactured for decades .. if you look on the tank you will find two small letters that indicate its date.
At the end I try to show the date letter, there is one, R, for 1927 making it 94 years old. I am pleased it came with the instructions and packing guide, I couldn't put it back in the box without it!
Wow! You scored that complete wee stovey for a fiver? Excellent bargain Ben! It was rather alarming though when it went a bit rogue! Cheers Ben, thanks mate but for goodness sake be careful with those things right in the workshop there!
They eyebrows are fine. I was gifted with the special ability to not lean right into big flames... It is a lovely thing. Very dinky and compact. PS Don't forget to like :)

Cheers Geoff.
The trick is to keep calm, and in this case let off the pressure and wait a bit longer. Still, makes an interesting thumbnail.
Same here, although brass can always patina over time so I just polish it to remove unwanted gunk that's stuck over years

@@GrumpyTim Perhaps I ought to post a picture of them for those who don't have them.
I have 2 optimus No5s for sale with silent burner, I am wait for a flame spreader to come for my 100 stove.
See some on etsy for reasonable price, picked one up on market place for 100Aud within an hour listed, sell really quick
Great little find there Ben, amazed its survived from 1927, i've clicked the bell for your future videos

Hello Ben,
A very interesting video... Looking forward to seeing the few tweaks you need to make in a future video...
Cheers.
Paul,,
Many thanks, I will get around to it some time in the next month I expect. I do keep spares.
Wow 1927. I have an old railway one somewhere.. it's a little bigger. A handy tool to have for when the power goes out

@@BensWorkshop oops I did forget to hit the like .. going back to do it now
I'm number 12
Cheers!
We all have our oops moments.... Like having the stove flair up in flames. ;)
I soaked my tin in 5L of warm water and 55g of citric acid, and didnt damge the paint at all and removed the rust.
Many thanks for the tip. I might try that. Many thanks for watching, please like, share and if you like the channel, subscribe!

Good deal Ben! That Swedish wonder for pounds five! In these regions I would not lose 70 pounds. Congratulations.
I got a very good deal from someone who wasn't bothered and just trying to get rid of it. It is very compact though, ideal for backpacking.

It was fine. The trick with things like paraffin stoves is to remain calm. It is a good stove though. I will service it and clean out the riser.
And I forgot to mention that they're even noisier than I remembered!
Definitely not the silent burner. I think all mine are of the noisy variety.
You need to give these a extra long prime before pumping it I have found

No. I quite like it as a stove.

Этот примус стоит 60-150€
That shop is a fire hazard
No. The stuff that actually catches fire easily is not close by.
