He turned it down initially because he had recently split from Tammy Wynette and didn't want people to relate the song to their divorce or have it come across as a broken heart song. It's plausible that she just left him and left her stuff behind. I know a lady who did that in real life. The line that points to your interpretation is "Now she's gone forever" On the other hand..... he does seem to be blaming her in most of the song and if she died in childbirth he probably would be blaming fate or god. You're right too about it being fun figuring out lyrics!
This is one of my very favorite "sad songs" and no one sings it like George Jones. Strange that some people didn't understand it was about a men who died. "They placed a wreath upon his door" would be the clue for me. I grew up in the 50s in the south and remember that a wreath of white imitation carnations was placed on/by the front door by the funeral home to indicate a death in the family. Maybe other places in the US that was not the custom. Just a guess.

In 1978, I had a brother that passed away with the same story heard in "He stopped Loving Her Today" His wife ran around on him while he lay in his hospital bed in critical condition from an electrical burn he suffered on an electrical line installation. He survived the accident but lost a leg. She left him several times along the way and was seen running around with other men during that time. He just kept taking her back even though we all told him to dump her sorry behind. Another, younger brother of mine used to play poker with George Jones. I feel sure that that conversation came up during that time, especially when she did show up at his funeral. AND, we all wondered if she would. Bobby Braddock said that he had always had an idea for that song. I like to think it was about my brother. He was a heck of a guy, and that song reminds me of him. Oh, Yeah! mendon lezine Re: Grand Tour I think you're right. I believe she did die. Although with the exception of one line the song could be about her leaving and taking the baby with her. It's plausible that she just left him and left her stuff behind. I know a lady who did that in real life. The line that points to your interpretation is "Now she's gone forever" On the other hand..... he does seem to be blaming her in most of the song and if she died in childbirth he probably would be blaming fate or god. You're right too about it being fun figuring out lyrics!

This is one of my very favorite "sad songs" and no one sings it like George Jones. Strange that some people didn't understand it was about a men who died. "They placed a wreath upon his door" would be the clue for me. I grew up in the 50s in the south and remember that a wreath of white imitation carnations was placed on/by the front door by the funeral home to indicate a death in the family. Maybe other places in the US that was not the custom. Just a guess.

In 1978, I had a brother that passed away with the same story heard in "He stopped Loving Her Today" His wife ran around on him while he lay in his hospital bed in critical condition from an electrical burn he suffered on an electrical line installation.
He survived the accident but lost a leg. She left him several times along the way and was seen running around with other men during that time. He just kept taking her back even though we all told him to dump her sorry behind.
Another, younger brother of mine used to play poker with George Jones. I feel sure that that conversation came up during that time, especially when she did show up at his funeral. AND, we all wondered if she would.
Bobby Braddock said that he had always had an idea for that song. I like to think it was about my brother. He was a heck of a guy, and that song reminds me of him.

But could you imagine if your dad passed away early in your life and you heard Conway Twitty's "That's my job"? They might have to build another ark with the amount of tears that'll flow.
