    Hard to believe its 30 years old this year. One of my favourite movies. For a film that's 30 years old the special effects still hold up along with the makeup effects.

      His comedy style in the early-mid 90s was just insanely brilliant. Sure as an adult I kind of shrug on Ace Ventura, but this movie I am only too happy to rewatch. Same with Batman Forever! Also happy he is coming back a third time in the Sonic movies. As he will surely carry the load.

      How many are old enough to recall where that line originated? It's from an old Alka Seltzer ad, that aired around 1970, on a rather heavy rotation. The joke was a guy filming a commercial, where he would take a bite of a meatball, and utter that famous line. Well, after a couple dozen takes (and just as many bites) he had serious heartburn.

      @@matthewrosenthal753 I didn't think it was all that bad. When you compare it to the original, of course it's gonna fail miserably. But I like it for what it is, a quirky kids movie that actually has a few comedic moments and some decent acting. I like the Tonya character, she's probably the best actor of the movie. And Jamie Kennedy wasn't bad as the mask, but he could have been given much better material to work with. It's a guilty pleasure of mine, I've definitely seen far worse big budget films.

    The Mask is a comedy classic as well as being a great comic book movie in its own right. It may not be tonally accurate but there are a lot of things from the comic lifted and adapted to the film. I love the visual look to the movie with all the neon blues, pinks and greens. The Jazz soundtrack is perfect and it’s a damn shame we never got a proper sequel with Jim Carrey.
    An R-Rated reboot would be acceptable in today’s world, I can see it being tonally similar to Joker with Jared Letto only more violent.

    I love the twist with the female leads, switching Good/Bad positions.
    Interestingly, this twist repeated in the cartoon with Peggy retaking the lead after remorse, and Tina not present. I guess the producers saw more long term potential in Peggy.
    I always figured that’s why they cut out her death scene. And she could have been in the sequel, had it been a more direct continuation from the original.

    Before the infamous Son of the Mask was made, Nintendo Power Magazine ran a contest for a supposed sequel to The Mask. But it was canceled because Jim Carrey is not a fan of sequels, especially the poor performance of Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Contest winner: Nathan Runk, was contacted by Nintendo Power after Carrey declined the role. Runk was given the option to either receive a cash payout ($5,000 USD), or waiting for the movie to be made in the future (so he could have the originally planned prize). He chose the money. In addition, Runk was given a multitude of THQ games, a unique The Mask II crew jacket (that he unfortunately lost as it got given to a Goodwill), and a phone call from Leslie Swan, a Nintendo localization manager and editor who voiced Princess Peach in Super Mario 64. The final issue of Nintendo Power (#285) included an apology to the winner of the contest: "To whoever won that contest: sorry."

    11:30 I remember reading that they also wanted to keep her alive because they wanted to have her replace Stanley as the new lead. And shortly after Jim Carrey and his deal with a sequel ended around 1996, they were playing with the idea to instead have her be the lead instead and have her be the one to find the mask and become the first live action big head. And although that never happened, the actress who played her got the chance to show up at the premiere of Son of the Mask with her daughter.

    The Mask movie is a fine classic!
    But what I have wanted FOR YEARS and YEARS now is a movie, no a trilogy of The Mask fully based on the comic-books from the original Dark Horse publishing.
    That bloody violance, that dark humor and insane graphics. How and why this has not happend yet is beyond any sane reason as I KNOW this is not only a gold-mine ready to get but the possibilities are so great AND the budget(s) don't have any need for be huge. We see a lot of "The Conjuring, The Nun, Exorcist" etc milking that serves no purpose what-so-ever but this concept of having The Mask in the first set of movies be based on Stanley Ipkiss and Lt. Calloway's stories and then if there are good ideas see the mask happens in the hands of new people using it for there gains - in same insane way....

    Also, the illusions to past superhero tropes found in Superman and Batman comics. Peggy is a newspaper writer like Louis Lane, while Tina is a girlfriend of a mob boss, working at his "legitimate" business. This is more a general trope where the female character can be a temptation to the or further obstacles, misleading or attacking them. Sometimes, they support the villain but wind up being double crossed like peggy. Alicia Hunt from the burtonverse certainly cames to mind. The weirdness is that the T.V. show splits into an alternate reality where Stanley DOESN'T give up the mask and thus loses Tina. INSTEAD Tina is brought back into the picture and made much more like her Lous Lane inspiration, but a bit reversed. She and Stanley make up where she still clearly knows who the Mask is but likes Stanley. She has a mild, playful relationship with the Mask, almost to an antagonistic point. It's a very siblingesque dynamic since he is much more a seperate entity and tends to throw his "normal" counterpart under the bus. She is attracted to Stanley and supports him though he does have other momentary love intrests and they never ran long enough to have the two officially get together as far as I remember. She is much more mild, ethical but also curious and sassy like Lois Lane tended to be. Tina however, doesn't make an appearence and apparently just fled for a better life out of Edge city after she was freed from mob ties and Stanley went the more asshole route. It may seem really weird that Peg woudl be set the way she was in the movie, based on a famous preexisting hero love intrest, just to fake us out as the opposite, but then became that character..except..you'll notice the world of the cartoon Mask gets progressively more and more like a comic. The characters and events drift further and further from our standard base reality, with more carrooney elements introduced. Stanley also wears the mask much more often, becoming the superhero identity more and more of his time. I think the possible inference is that reality IS warping thanks to the Mask. Since this version of Stanley was still more immature and wanted to play the superhero, the continued use of the Mask by him started to cause thar fantasy to start taking over reality. Stanley was going to be a superhero so now he needed a new, fitting girlfriend and villains so the Mask produced. They brought an old face back but warped her mind and caused a sudden rush of villains to be created/show up but with cartooney intent.

      Good comparison to Batman 89, with Tina seemingly filling in the Alicia Hunt role, and Peggy seemingly playing a similar character to fellow journalist Vicki Vale. But it does annoy me that blonde hair is always coded as 'good' for women in movies, and red hair is usually a sign a woman is 'evil'. It seems like something Hitler and the Nazis would have approved of. I suppose it's a shame that we never got to see the Anna Nicole Smith version where her blonde bad girl would have stayed bad.

    • @buddyzilla4557
      @buddyzilla4557 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @GregOrCreg -I don't know. I feel blonde is more derogitorially portrayed honestly. Usually, it is used for the shallow bimbette or sleezy fem Fatale in spy movies. It's typically the less assuming brunette that winds up being the "good girl." If you want a fake out, positive red head; just look to Jessica Rabbit. She was doing the not actually evil, fem Fatale love intrest to a crazy cartoon nutball well before Tina.

    I would have liked having the Viking intro, and I agree that the extended alarm clock scene with the "killing time" one-liner would have been great to leave in, but I pretty much agree with the rest of the cuts.
    With regards to a sequel, I was a regular subscriber to Nintendo Power magazine back when The Mask came out, and I remember that, to celebrate the release of the tir-in video game, the magazine held a contest with the grand prize being a walk-on role in the sequel (which it claimed was already in pre-production at that point). I wonder what happened with the winner of that contest. Anyways, I would be open to a sequel even all these years later, as long as Carey could be convinced to do it. Maybe have the mask find its way to an adult child of Stanley's who is down on their luck or something like that (of course, for a notable portion of the film, we would HAVE TO see Stanley himself return as the Mask).

    • @RoboBeastWarrior
      @RoboBeastWarrior 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Since the sequel got cancelled after the contest winner was selected, Nintendo had to pay the winner the equivalent cash value that he would have earned for the cameo.
