I'm glad you enjoyed it! When I first played it back in the day, I was more inclined on how you felt about the last fourth of the game too lol. However, after the replays while knowing the story up ahead, it made me appreciate the time at Terra and other places even more so. I'm still finishing up my replay on the game so maybe I would see the tedious factor on Memoria soon lol but overall, I'm glad to see you had a blast while playing this one! FF6 is also one of my faves and though there might not be a random encounter off switch like in 9 (you gotta use an item for that unless they finally update it with the new Pixel Remaster in PS vs how they did on Steam), the story is still one I think about often along with 9.
I don't find turn-based battle systems boring at all. I much prefer it to the more modern system where you only control the party leader and put the rest on auto-pilot. The best thing about turn-based RPGs are that there is actual strategy involved in the fighting (and not the illusion of strategy, like in FFXII where you have to set gambits or FFXIII where you just need to know what best paradigm combination to use in any given situation). I love FFIX but in my opinion, FFX nailed the turn-based battle system by really utilizing it to its fullest potential regarding strategy.
Glad you liked it! The old titles are where the greatness of FF resides. And they aren't really turn based since IV, when ATB system was introduced. The thing is: how a not so active battle turn out to be fun 'till the end. And IX was the first that kept me engaged in it even after 100 hours gameplay; there's tons of action RPGs that can't achieve that. If I may: try any other from VI onwards. You won't regret it. Thanks for the video, dude!
So honestly I think you just have quality of life updates to thank for your enjoyment of FF9. The original PS version would have certainly grinded your gears more. And the funny thing is that while the original game might have chocobos and such to reduce some tedium, you often need to go through tedium in order to get those reprieves. Ironically, FF9 is probably even slower than a lot of the turn-based FF's, due to how the ATB system works in tandem with the animations and 4 party members. The default ATB settings are painfully slow, even for me who holds the game near and dear to my heart. The battle system has certain problems that aren't in previous FF games, and they easily go unnoticed by new players. Luckily, new versions of the game have the speedup function, which is admittedly just a necessity at this point, and I say that having wasted enough hours on the game myself as a kid with unlimited free time. The new versions also have lowered encounter rates, and that's without even putting on the no-encounter cheat. So I'm glad the new ports at least do something significantly positive for you in that regard, cause I was honestly expecting you to hate the gameplay and only have good things to say about story. Consequentially, less encounters resulted in less tedium for you AND more quality in the challenges you faced. That thing about needing strategy during the Amarant fight? I don't think I experienced that, because there were enough random encounters to put me at at least level 30 with many abilities by that point. Looking at your levels, I see that you did a fairly low-level run, making things harder, but still doable. But I guess that's less of a fluke and more of a credit to the game; allowing the player to push the story and still be strong enough without grinding. It was in fact designed with speedruns and Level 1 playthroughs in mind. Yes, the story loses itself a bit by the end, and it's one thing I hope is improved if they ever remake the game (and Amarant), and not make it worse like they did for FF7 remake. The ending features themes which can be appropriate, but the game didn't do enough groundwork to make everything fully cohesive imo, especially in Memoria. Fantastic review tho.
I was skeptical at first because Im not a turn based person either outside of a few exceptions and I didn't enjoy FFX but I did Like OG FF7 so after seeing this any doubt I had was removed and I feel like Im gonna love Final Fantasy 9
The gripe with turned based combat is kind of crazy to me, learning new skills, seeing their animations, and having the right party setup will always be fun to me in any turned based JRPG
Try Persona 5 royal. Its not tedious or boring despite being turn based. I can't COUNT the number of people I have come across who hated the genre till playing that one.
You gunna play side FF games or only mainline? FF war of the lions got a good story but it's a tactical RPG... Also when are the streams coming back coward
I'm probably just gonna wait on a tactics remaster if you've heard the rumors recently. Kinda burned out on FF at this point so might begin branching out. Also don't see streams coming back any time soon :)
Lol FF9 has the worst turn-based combat of any of the PS1 era Final Fantasy games, its SOOOOOOOO slow. 7 and 8 are much better when it comes to turn based combat.
Loved this review
Thanks I’m going to buy the game and try it out now 😊

Now I'm wondering what you would think of the turn based combat system from "Child of Light". I get the same warm feelings from both that one and FF9.
