The Streets are great , that whole album “ A grand don’t come for free “ is a story that runs thru from the first track to the last , it’s amazing . Well worth a listen even in ur own time ...Mike Skinner is a genius 🔥🔥
The whole album A Grand don’t come for free was one whole story and it is so amazing. One of the songs Dry your eyes is one of the most honest songs I’ve ever heard.
One of my favorite hip hop artists of all time. I enjoyed your reaction video. I was lucky enough to see The Streets live in Chicago back in the early 2000's, amazing performance.
Mike Skinner/The Streets is without a doubt a legend. Most people do find his style of rapping bad at first but there's something about him where his style just grows on you, in particular the theme of alot of his songs, he has an ability to paint a picture of what he's saying. That along side his style of off beat production, it shouldn't work but it does on so many levels!
Life here is tough and gritty. That why our artistic contributions often have that vibe. The closest i can compare it to is new york. It got that same grimey gritty vibe. So yeah we do grow up fast. Also our age limits are lower for most things. Sex at 16, Drink and smoke at 18 (smoking was 16 when kidulthood was released) . We start school earlier and finish earlier (16, but has changed to 18 for kids starting now).
The Mitchell Brothers did a remix of this on a mixtape they released back in the day. Absolute Iconic Song this is, I was about 18 when this came out, peak times
Mike Skinner is a legend , done early tracks with a load of Grime MCs - Pranging out MC mic - Nite Nite - Kano ft Streets - Mitchell Brothers , Kano and the Streets - Routine Check
Yooooo...I haven't heard this for time!! What a tune, hits on different levels...used to listen to this when I came home high and drunk af and fall asleep to it!!! I was already subscribed before this but would have subscribed just FOR this!! 👍👊✌❤
The song playing in the background at the beginning of the video is 'Routine Check' by The Mitchell Brothers feat. Kano. A great song that I've not seen anyone react to yet & The Mitchell Bros are slept on hard, they were signed to Mike Skinner (The Streets) label & released 2 albums. Check out their first 'A Breath of Fresh Attire'.
The streets are massive in the UK mainly earlly 2000's but this is the roots of London rap for me just a whole different vibe with it, late night chill music man
It's best to listen to the whole album. It tells the story of a bloke who loses a grand, meets a las l, gets bored of her, goes on holiday has an affair, comes home, gets mashed in a club whilst his las cops off with his mate, misses breaks up with him and it ducks him up. His loses his mates and his TV breaks. He sits down and has a can of special and realises if he wasn't a twat his day would better. Through some magic time get redone and he realises if he is fair with his mates he'll keep them. Also if he doesn't lose his shit with the TV man, the TV man tells him that an envelope with a grand has fallen with his TV. Essentially his misses has left him but at least hes found his grand so sweet. Theres also a bit about betting and forgetting to fill in the form correctly and nearly losing money ... But yeah listen to the album it's pretty good story
That album is still his best work. Love how the songs are all tied together and reference each other and tells an over-arching story. His girlfriend is sleeping with his friend. He thinks it is the Molly messing with him when he sees her kissing his friend. Other songs on the album deal with him figuring it out and dealing with his friend stabbing him in the back.
This track is dope as f man…..one of my favourite tunes ever…..this was a HUGE track in the UK when it came out man……resonates with so many peoples lives/experiences in clubs in the UK man
You should totally react to Kano ft. The Streets - nite nite Kano has also been on at least two the Streets remixes, "fit but you know it" and "get out of My House". He has also covered "has it come to this" and on top of that they featured together in other artists songs like the Mitchell brothers
crazy cause i'm from Belize and Kidulthood was my first introduction to London culture as well. looked up The Streets just like you bc that scene in the film had big effect on me same way
Its a great track, i can just picture it in my head, its part of a concept album and its actually set in the nightclub not a wedding, music clip is recorded at the wedding, not sure why.
I think it is best to listen to this song with no video as I think most of us have been in the same situation and listening with no video it takes me back..
We be wilding here in the UK. When i was a teenager in the late 80's / early 90's we started drinking in the pub at 14 years old. Rarely got refused, if ever.

Hell yeah, I heard this song from Kidulthood as well. The song Katie plays before she hangs herself is also by The Streets. It’s called Stay Positive. Great tune.
This was a massive tune over here. I think I was about 10 or 11 when this album came out and my parents played it to death, specially this tune got played on mtv through the night years after it came out. Still a classic album!

Mike Skinner (The Streets) has a totally unique style. Great stuff. All of his songs, and his albums as well, are stories. This one is about his girl and his boy getting together behind his back, and him getting more and more wasted while he tries to find them. When he finally sees them, he's so hammered he doesn't realize what is going on. The album is about how he loses a grand, finds a girl, suspects his friends about the money, loses the girl (to his friend), then finds the money where he misplaced it :)
I was 18 from Kentucky and saw his video on fuse or MTV in '02 or '03. His first album Original pirate material is good, but his 2nd A grand don't come free was amazing. This is a track that's always gonna sound great from the beat alone. Still like Mike Skinner.
You were saying there was nothing like Kidulthood in America, but there is a great movie that came out in 1995 called Kids, it was very controversial at the time
The streets are probably one of the most rated/underrated groups in the world. In certain circles, they are legends, internationally they are under appreciated.
I always thought ‘Kidulthood’ was trying to be a UK version of ‘Kids’ but not as good. Also there’s a remix of this with rhyming over the beat by The Michell Brothers who were also on Mike Skinners record label at the time. Check it out.
