@@internationalferg he speaks the truth. It kinda went from house music in the early 90s to drum n base/jungle like goldie in the mid 90s,to garage like so solid in late 90s to grime in early 00s like roll deep etc.
Lets just say, when this came out 19 years ago it was the biggest urban hit the UK ever had, everyone and their grandmother new it. Made So Solid Crew into a house hold name and paved the way for another handful of radio hits just like this but prob not as well known or remembered: So Solid Crew - Broken Silence So Solid Crew - Haters So Solid Crew & Ms Dynamite - Envy So Solid Crew - Ride Wid Us So Solid Crew - Oh No (Sentimental Things) So Solid Crew - They Don't Know
Before Wiley and Dizzie came on the scene, garage was the big underground sound in the U.K. dominated by london. It was born out of house hence the name garage. Originally it was mostly instrumental but as time went on more and more people started spitting on it. When garage MC's first started spitting on the beats it was usually about partying, gd vibes, stuff for the ladies. Music to dance to. As the scene grew and boomed obviously it got more mainstream attention. See tracks such as Wookie - Battle, Love Station - Teardrops, Wideboys - Sambuca, Heartless Crew - Heartless Anthem, Masters of the Ceremomy - Do you really like it, Future Underground Nation - It's the way, Somore - I refuse, Roy Davies Jr. - Gabrielle, Artful.Dodger - Thong Song Remix. So solid were one of the first crews spitting more real life, street bars reflecting the life alot of young men in the hood were really living. Obviously the government hated it and tried to silence them. They 100% set the bencmark for grime, bare mcs spitting 8 bar verses on one track. Grime came after, Wiley was spittung with Pay As You Cartel and then went off and started making beats at 140bpm putting the snare on the 3rd beat of each bar mostly, changing the swing and vibe of the beats. Where as garage had a snare/clap on the 2 and 4 with the hi hat and rim shot/ghost snare shuffle. Sadly grime took oved and garage went back underground but it's legacy is still strong. So Solid were the catalyst for it.
The song title alludes to the approximate 21 seconds that each of the band members is given to perform their rap. 21 seconds is arrived at as the song's tempo is approximately 140BPM and each of the 11 so solid members rapper has 12 bars of 4 beats (48 beats at 140BPM, when worked out to the nearest integer, rounds to 21 seconds). It's so solid member Lisa Maffia's daughter laughing at the beginning of the track.
Incorrect the tempo is 137BPM. UK radio limit for a song is about 3 mins to 3.30, hence the term radio edit. They worked out how many members were gonna be on the track and divided that by the song limit and everyone got 21.9 seconds.
Hey first time on ur channel, thanks for covering this. But I don't think u realise how the afro Caribbean has blessed us in the UK. I'm Indian British but been blessed with a mixture of music. Hearing u as reminded me lol. Bless

The most important thing about this song is that it was Number One in the charts back when that mattered. That achievement is amazing, when you think back. They didn't have any kind of label hype, they got there off their own backs
The dude who spit first was Megaman. He was the brains behind so solid crew. You must check out heir track Envy ft Miss Dynamite ( Akalas sister) Asher D spits more on that track, but Miss dynamite IMO murders them all on it. Another guy who spit a verse was Harvey he has a TH-cam channel where he does interviews. He interviews Asher D in one of them and he explains where he came from, how his boys would give him grief of going to acting school etc, a decent watch
I remember this being big when this came out. Although I heard they’re ‘oh no (sentimental things) before this came out. Going off the topic of garage and grime...... the uk had some hip hop groups in the 90’s.... ‘London Posse’ was one... if you ever wanna check out some of their stuff. They were very early 90’s though.... and had been together since the 80’s.
Bullet Boy movie came out a few years after 21 Seconds. But Asher D was definitely an actor first because he was in a TV show as a yute in Grange Hill but his acting career really took off after Bullet Boy because he then ended up being in the movie Get Rich or Die Tryin alongside 50 Cent
Unfortunately Swiss weren't really an MC back then he was more of a producer which he produced some tracks for So Solid Crew's debut album They Don't Know but he did feature on Lisa Maffia song All Over. And Lisa Maffia is the woman in this video. The first guy was Megaman who is the founder of So Solid Crew.

This was the first mega UK sound that was for UK MC's in such a big way. There was some US influence on that, but far less that the UK hip hop scene (which is also fire btw its not all just Grime, we spit over anything from grime hip hop dub to fucking DnB and Techno)

Most of this genre (Garage) was played in clubs but there were a few that made it commercially in the charts. The Girl is Lisa Mafia. This was a banger in the 00's.
You missed out Kano in the influences to grime and musicality. He is always passed up, but he was the only one that put hooks, chorus etc in a grime song back then. He made grime viable rather than just MC-ing on a track.
The reason its called 21 Seconds is because in order for everyone to be able rap, and keep it within the time frame of being able to be played on radio. Each member had 21 seconds to rap
Solid was the most commercial/recognisable UK Garage group but between ‘99 to ‘01 UK Garage was at its peak!! I was 18 and used to dance all night to these songs!! The first real uk rappers were groups like London possee, and hijack who was signed by Ice T. These two groups came out in the middle to late 80's and were obviously deeply influenced by New York rappers of that time such as KRS1, and Public Enemy. The London Posse and Hijack paved the way for groups like So Solid Crew. When speaking of UK female rappers you have to talk about the orginators of UK female rap Monie Love and the Cookie crew, both of which were picked up or collaborated with Queen Latifha again, in the middle to late 80's.

So solid bust down that door for black UK Music and Wiley gave us our Grime sound.
Asher D aka Ashely Walters was a young actor first he was in TV show Young Indiana Jones Chronicals and Grange Hill, then became a rapper then back to acting. A lot of the brit rappers where actors first like Stormzy......
This song was pre-grime. Was number one in the country for weeks and weeks. Huge crossover. Foundational British crew. The quick emceeing is from Jamaican roasting and jungle culture, rather than hip hop. All verses 21 seconds. All are from south london. The lady is Lisa mafia. Asher D was an emcee before actor. Was important as it established a UK sound, instead of copying US. Their shows sadly used to get banned due to violence. Thank you for reviewing.
Not just american hip hop but bashment, jamaican dancehall..a lot of jamaicans in London and these guys very likely had jamaican parents/grandparents... influenced garage, ska which in turn influenced british rock...the caribbean influence is often overlooked when it comes to pop(ular) music

This is a big tune over there in England still till this day everyone knows of So solid crew
Not just american hip hop but bashment, jamaican dancehall..a lot of jamaicans in London and these guys very likely had jamaican parents/grandparents... influenced garage, ska which in turn influenced british rock...the caribbean influence is often overlooked when it comes to pop(ular) music
