  • There's been a bit more progress on Worsley Dale OO gauge Garden Railway.
    The passing loop along the ground level section has now been reinstated while the motorised points at either end have been converted into motor-less 'spring' points so that trains from either direction are automatically routed onto the correct running line as they exit the single track sections. This has meant having to ensure that each vehicle, particularly small 2-axle wagons, is of a sufficient weight to push the sprung points across and not ride up onto the point blades.
    37425 has now been sound-fitted and added to the loco roster as well as being newly 'named', though it's not a nameplate you are likely to have ever seen. The chap in question features in my profile photo and after the hours we've spent together out in the garden while building two garden railways it seemed a fitting way to remember.

    Best outdoor layout ever. Those viaducts really blend in with the garden scenery.

      Thank you for your comments! There are certainly better outdoor layouts to be discovered but mine was built with the specific aim initially to resemble a small single line heritage type railway until I discovered the delights of a Scottish Highland line. Now I try to keep to the Scottish theme and really like the ruggedness that you can achieve outdoors by using natural materials and allowing nature to do its work with the weathering.

      Hi Dave. Thank you for the comments. I tend to focus on small scenic sections for the videos which do tend to make it look better than it probably is. I would say the layout itself is pretty basic being in the main just a single line but in my view keeping things simple and basic is the best way. It's still requires a lot of work to keep things running smoothly.

      Thanks for your comments. The layout wouldn't be the same without the log train - it was one of the reasons for deciding to base it around a single line with a sense of the Highlands.

      Thanks Tom. Yes the ground level section integrates nicely and is the most scenic part of the layout. It's also my favourite section but the one most susceptible to the weather. However, now that the plywood base has been replaced with building block it's far more resilient.

    Great piece of work. The viaduct construction is superb and the idea of using aireated concrete blocks is a first for me. The cutting of the arches and the natural facing of the blocks gives a most realistic finish, representing the concrete viaduct s on the West Highland Extension to Mallaig. The train make up and sound very much create s the feel and atmosphere of the line. Thank you for sharing.

    • @oogardenrailway
      @oogardenrailway  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Melvyn. Yes, some of the loco's sound very pleasing on video but there are some that are a bit weak by today's standards. Upgrading the speakers makes a difference but with the older chips it's difficult to source anything more suitable which ultimately means replacing the decoder at even greater expense.

    • @oogardenrailway
      @oogardenrailway  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tom and thank you for your comments. The loco in question is a class 67 in the new Caledonian Sleeper livery. It's Hornby model R3388TTS, 67004 'Cairn Gorm', originally fitted with a TTS chip but since replaced with Digitrains class 67 sound on a Zimo decoder.

    • @oogardenrailway
      @oogardenrailway  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Richard. I would recommend Peco Streamline code 100 nickel silver track for a garden layout. Some of mine has been outdoors now for almost 9 years with no problems. I'm not sure what else is on the market but you won't go far wrong using the above. Wooden or concrete sleeper appear to be equally as durable outdoors. I've used both types. Hope this helps you on your way!

      I don't David. It's all left exposed to all weathers and to date everything's been fine. I wouldn't want to start having to cover things up so its now always built to be left out in the open and unprotected.

    • @oogardenrailway
      @oogardenrailway  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well this layout's been operating for about 9 years now Alan and to date I've never experienced any problems with power supply. It's withstood all the British climate can throw at it and a quick walk round with the track rubber and we're up and running again.

    • @oogardenrailway
      @oogardenrailway  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alantoms3263 That's ok Alan. Power supply, voltage drop, and 'what happens when it rains?' are the most asked questions but none of them are cause for concern - though the rain does curtail running for a while. It's fine in the garden.

    • @alantoms3263
      @alantoms3263 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oogardenrailway That's great to hear. TBH I've been considering doing the same myself - as a 'future project' once the lads grow up. Could be interesting and would give the locomotives a pretty decent run, instead of being F1-style round-and-round incessantly!

    DCC is absolutely pointless outdoors and the sound is nothing like the real thing
