26 - Worsley Dale OO gauge Garden Railway - New Season

- After a long winter break and in a change from working on the attic layout, 'Skew Bridge', today sees a return to the outdoors and the OO gauge 'Worsley Dale Garden Railway'.
Since the ground level section was re-laid late last year due to the plywood base succumbing to the elements there's been no actual running on the garden railway until today. It was only yesterday that power was finally restored to the tracks and testing could begin but as you'll see, there remains much to do in order to restore the lineside plants and vegetation.
Only 4 loco's are currently back out and working although 26024 is used for all purposes both in and outdoors and is commonly to be seen hauling the CMX track cleaner. No other loco I own has covered more mileage than 26024 and it never complains! As a reward for its service I allowed it to haul a short freight today so that it could feature on the video.
That viaduct is fantastic! Now to see if I can make something similar without the wife noticing.....
Go for it! She'll love it once she sees those little trains running along the top. Let me know how you get on.

Like the way you’ve cut the soft breeze blocks to shape for the viaducts and tunnels - great idea and very neat.

Thank you for your comments. It's not always easy achieving smooth running outdoors as even the smallest pieces of grit and debris can lead to a bumpy ride. Track (and structures) can also be easily disturbed by wildlife but it is certainly an enjoyable way to operate.

Thanks for your comment Colin. I hope it's given you the inspiration you need to make a start. Be warned though that it's hard work and, just like the real thing, it requires constant maintenance in order to keep it running. Well as you probably know already, providing the weather's fine, as it has been for the past week or so, then there's no better place for a model railway than out in the garden be it O gauge or OO gauge! It's where a railway is supposed to be. I much prefer the outdoor layout to the indoor one.

The viaduct has weathered nicely since I last saw it. My layout has not been touched for almost five years. Feeling the urge to revamp.
Hi Craig. Yes, the viaduct's been out there for a few years now as you know so it's showing the effects of nature - and at least it's still standing! Five years is a long time for a layout to remain untouched so no doubt you'll have your hands full getting yours back in operation.

Thanks Duke. There's still an awful lot that needs doing on the scenic side and several things that need improving but the layout itself works well so there's no great rush to get things done right away.
Lovely stuff! I bet there are more garden railways being built now then ever before! :-) Maybe one day I can build one as well.
It would be nice to think so and to think that my own efforts had maybe inspired someone else to give it a try. It's often a harsh environment but the rewards are plenty. Look forward to hearing you've made it outdoors too in the not too distant future. Thank you for your comments.

Thanks Melvyn. Yes, I feel it's been worth the effort but a garden layout is an ongoing project. There's always work to do to keep everything running well but that's all part of the enjoyment.

Hi and thank you for your comments. I think it's the natural surroundings and the lighting that makes it look good on video - plus you only see sort of cropped areas of the scene. There's still areas that need additional work in order to blend the trackbed into the garden and I'm slowly working on it.

Enjoyed watching this I have to admit your 37 is the best sounding OO gauge locomotive I've heard. To me, for some reason, locomotives with sound, sound....um tinny; no really realistic enough. But this didn't seem to have that tinny sound which I thought was quite good. The viaduct looked terrific the plant to train ratio didn't look to bad. Cheers 👍🎩😉
It's very difficult to get decent sound from the confines of a small loco and I'm not too keen on cutting bits out of the chassis to accommodate larger speakers - that's a bit too extreme for me. I've got plenty of sound-fitted loco's that disappoint, more so given the cost, so I can fully understand your reservations but for me it just adds that little bit extra realism. Without the sound there's something missing.
@@oogardenrailway hello again I just clicked the 37s sound and the scale trains. You've done well my only sounds fitted locomotive is a Helgan class 76; it came inbuilt with it. Take care.

How long is the garden run, or is it an oval? In which case, how long is a complete circuit?
Hi. Yes it's an oval/circular layout with a total running length of approximately 40 metres which equates to a scale distance of approx 1.9 miles or thereabouts.
That is A Lovely Garden Railway you have there ,How long did it take you to build that nice Viaduct ? !
Thanks for your comments Graham. Using aerated blocks the viaduct was built fairly quickly - just a week or so to get the main structure in place for each 16 arch section. I actually built it in two phases with a 12 month break between. It was supposed to be just 16 arches long but I ended up extending it to 32 in order to maintain a level track round to the bottom of the garden.

Hi and thanks for your comments. There are two viaducts on the layout and both were built in the same manner using lightweight aerated building blocks. I made straight cuts and removed most of the arch section (leaving a kind of 'T' shape) before the blocks were cemented together standing on end and then the arch properly formed with a file. Very easy to do, blocks are easy to work with and you get a substantial viaduct for very little outlay. There's an article on oogardenrailway.co.uk showing the process.
Love the viaduct, well all the work actually. I have heard that 00 gauge can be a real issue sometimes for outdoor running, requiring constant cleaning as opposed to a layout under cover, so to speak. Is it a certain type of 00 gauge track you use to reduce the cleaning issues, or do you just do it because it has to be done? Traditionally O and G gauge have been used mostly for outdoors track, with most people shying away from 00 due to cleaning issues, oxidation or rusting from the elements etc. Would like to hear your views on that and what you do to make 00 gauge more resilient to weather, etc.
Hi Brian. Thank you for your comments. Yes it's often hard work running OO gauge outdoors as there are so many aspects to consider. The rails actually clean easily, it's the bird droppings that are more stubborn and quite often very messy. I use Peco Streamline code 100 which tarnishes to varying degrees depending on which part of the garden it's located. I can clean the whole line in 15 mins or so and be up and running. OO outdoors requires careful thought and resilient construction methods and materials - cutting corners will simply lead to frustration and failure. Do it right and there's no better place to run your models.
@@oogardenrailway Thanks for that education..haha I never thought of bird droppings at all. Excellent point. Yes cutting corners can be "fatal". I have seen that even with large garden railways where the gauge might even be one foot to two feet wide. Like you say, do it right, take the time and it is a great place to run the models. you have given me some more inspiration now.

@@Steven_20031 I use Peco Streamline code 100 nickel silver track with a mix of wooden and concrete sleepers (SL-100 & SL-102). I have had no problems with either product to date and some of the track has been in use for several years.
