They do trick or treat in Japan but it's not widespread and you have to register for it. Its mostly businesses, not residences that give out treats, and they're typically nicer dessert/ food items rather than candy.
trixie tang Isn't that the same as Christmas? Like a lot of decorations, music and seasonal food, but very little celebration by the average Japanese person?

obviously. fucking japan lol of course you have to register to trick or treat. You should see how they go to a baseball game. they cheer in a highly organized way. Ive actually been to metal concerts in Tokyo and have SEEN Japanese people reading the lyrics to the songs on the train ride over there and they reherse the lines to properly sing along at the show. im not kidding.

I'm a simple man, when i see Emmy,i watch. Dead meme aside, my husband and i are now hooked on eating the world thanks to you. At first i was too biased to eat Tofu or Gyros, now i'm eating korean food for lunch and Indian for dinner.

I think the flavor you are looking for, instead of seafood-y, is briny. Tasting like salty ocean brine but not pungent.
We use our regular "carving pumpkins" to make pie filling every year! They're far from sweet but full of great pumpkin flavor! We cut the pumpkin into manageable pieces, pop em in the stock-pot with a lil water and cook em down to the desired consistency. Then spice em up and sweeten em up! Waste not, want not!😉 Wonderful video as always!

Halloween's a novelty in Australia too but I feel like stores here are desperately trying to make it happen and i'm like GRETCHEN STOP TRYING TO MAKE FETCH HAPPEN. I guess most people just do it for the kids.
Squidtadakimasu. We've had "real" sushi that a Japanese neighbor made for us some years ago, wrapped in seaweed and topped with thin slices of octopus tentacle. Yummy. But they and the squids can keep their ink. The fun part of Halloween for us now is seeing the creativity put into some of the kids' costumes, and the fun their parents have taking them around the neighborhood. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
I'm from the Caribbean and we also celebrate Día De Los Muertos like our Mexican friends. I was wondering if you ever thought about exploring recipes associated with Dia. Perhaps, galletas de calavera, pabassinas, pan de muerto, or even a drink like chocolate caribeño or champurrado.
miavilla I’m not Mexican but the day of the dead always interested me since my Spanish teacher told me about it back in school. That was about 20 years ago but I was reminded of it when I saw the last Bond film as well.

In Australia the pumpkin situation is similar to Japan. The only 'pumpkins' we usually get are Kabocha. The orange pumpkins are really hard to find, except during halloween when they sell them for crazy prices.
My best friend in middle school was Japanese (dad was in the service and stationed in the US) I loved those shrimp chips and I also loved the other Japanese snack with the diff shaped crackers and some are shiny. Yum!!
In Australia we have Japanese Pumpkins too! I think they're pretty. They were my grandma's favourite to cook pumpkin soup with. I must admit if I make pumpkin soup it's usually with a Butternut Squash - which we often refer haphazardly to as a "pumpkin" as well.

I also noticed. It’s probably important to note that blackface is a very American taboo particularly because of the history of racism, whereas in a place like japan, there isn’t the history or racist association, it wouldn’t be seen as bad, it would be seen as clever advertising. Globalization and racism are weird and interesting to study.

MultiPenguin66 I’ve drank lots of noni “tea” growing up and let me tell you, it’s not bad at all. It basically tastes like strong, kind of bitter tea. I would never call it stinky, only bitter and “dry” if anything.

40 years ago I lived in ungated U.S. Navy base housing in Yokohama, Japan. The Japanese children in the ajoining neighborhoods loved Halloween, and would trick or treat in our housing. There were hundreds of households there, and the kids really hit the jackpot. They loved American candy, and they carried pillow cases to collect it......no costumes.

I was a bit surprised by the pumpkin explanation at the beginning, I'm German and grew up with a staple of pumpkin called 'Hokkaido' pumpkin. Would have assumed that it is well known if not entirely really Japanese😁

"Chester"s", Cheetoh's branding, 'Puffcorn' snack, makes into an excellent caramel corn, with the addition of a buttery, sugary glaze and a quick toss...my dad whips it up around the holidays, and while that seemed far too infrequent an occurrence initially, i've come to appreciate this delicious creation even more due to its relegation to the "treats of the holidays at daddy's house" list - along with the other big contenders of memory inducing nibbles- sausage cheese balls (of course), cold spinach dip and better cheddars crackers, and peanut butter balls (cant remember xactly the formula- but some mix of PB, pwdr sugr and either cracker, cereal er some other crunchy element-rolly pollied then dipt in meltd chocolate that has a wee bit of paraffin wax in it for shine...Anyway, I digress... ;p- point was, you should google and try that caramel puffcorn if you've not already, but beware, it is addictive! Happy munchin', mommin' and youtubin--- and thank you, yet again, for all you do ma'dam
