This song was done while Waylon was into drugs. This is typical of his music from those years being dark, angry, melancholy and deep. I totally agree with you about comparing "country music" today vs. in the 1970s. There is no comparison and, IMHO, country music today has lost its way.

“Don’t you think this outlaw bit has done got out of hand” is my favorite Waylon song for musicality. “Are you sure Hank done it this way” and “Rose of Paradise” will always be my favorite all time Waylon songs.
Waylon once said he couldn’t write his biography at the peak of his popularity, due to legal issues for himself and others as well as “mortal retribution”. His biography was conveyed through his songs. The good the bad and the ugly parts of his life.

In that same concert, he performed songs such as Willie, the Wandering Gypsy (and Me), and We had it All. Two songs when coupled with this give you almost the complete diversity of the man, Waylon Jennings.

"Don't ask me about the years I spent out in the rain
About the ones I spent in love or the ones I spent insane
Don't ask me who I gave my seat to on that plane
    I think you already know
I told you that a long time ago"

This is definitely one of Waylon's best bangers. Before his solo music career, Waylon was a DJ and briefly played bass for fellow Texan Buddy Holly. If you've ever seen the US tv show The Dukes of Hazzard, that's Waylon performing the theme song, and you can see a close-up of him playing his signature leather clad Telecaster during the show's intro. The alternate lyrics of the song "Good O'l' Boys" are not used in the theme song version "Just a good ol' boy, I know my Mama loves me but she don't understand why they keep showing my hands and not my face on TV." 😀

Waylon was the narrator on the tv show the Dukes of Hazzard. He also sang the theme song for the show.
He sang a great tune with Willie Nelson ,Mama dont let your babies grown up to be Cowboys.
He played bass with Buddy Holly. He gave up his seat on the plane that night to the big bopper who was feeling ill. Waylon drove back on the cold tour bus .
Waylon was in the supergroup The Highway men .

      I was lucky enough to be seen in the first episode of Dukes 1978, me & my dad were standing in front of Harpers Dime store right as the General Lee comes sliding onto the Covington Georgia square being chased by Roscoe {TH-cam video Dukes Of Hazzard : Chase From 1st Episode} & was at Oxford College where they did the famous jump over Roscoe for the opening credits & then in 1981 I was on the opposite side of the square as Burt Reynolds lands the plane to get beer, I was with the group of folks in the background as Dom DeLuise walks behind the plane right before it turns around {TH-cam video Cannonball plane}

Of interest to you perhaps Waylon toured and performed without a playlist for the band. They knew what to play based on his first couple of licks on the guitar.
Ralph Moon on the slide guitar was the most gifted slide musician of that generation.
Usually Waylon just sang whichever verses he felt like.

Dooooood what a great song for you! I had a feeling you’d dig Waylon, he gets funky for sure. He was a bass player too and you can really hear it in his guitar grooves. I can’t wait to see you react to more of his. You should also try to find videos of him and Willie. Maybe someone on here can drop a link of him, Willie, Doug Kershaw, and Leon Russel. Another fantastic video. That’s some of my favorite Willie in that video.

Love the reaction, as always! Waylon was certainly one of the greats! If you haven't reacted to The Highwaymen, you need to give them a listen. It was a "supergroup" that included Waylon, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. Fantastic music.
If you can find it, do watch the Ken Burns' series "Country Music" that premiered on Public Television. It will give you a crash introductory course to country music.
In this context, "queen" does not refer to drag queens. It's a woman famous in the bars for being attractive to men, and usually for having a difficult personality. The implication is that this woman is famous on Basin Street for being beautiful and very hard to attract. You also hear the term used in this context in "Honky Tonk Women" by the Rolling Stones, as well as "Queen of Memphis" by Confederate Railroad -- among many others.
    Peace and Happy New Year!

Another great Waylon tune to check out would be Laid Back Country Picker or Black Rose. I'd also like to recommend a group called Hellbound Glory. The song Bastard Child is a great place to start. Another artist I would recommend is Tyler Childers, the song is Whitehouse Road. Do the black and white video from the Our Vinyl sessions. It's the best.

I always wondered about the name Codeine...which is also an opioid based pain killer. I know Waylon, Johnny and others took pills like amphetamines in the '60s. Not sure if they ever took Codeine but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to suppose he used that name with dual meaning- especially with Basin Street's former reputation.

Waylon was supposed to be on Buddy Hollies plane the night it went down. But the story goes that Waylon lost a coin toss and had to take the tour bus ( which had a broken heater. ) Buddy turned to Waylon and said " I hope your damned ol bus breaks down " to which Waylon replied " I hope your damned ol plane crashes. " well we all know that Buddys plane did crash and all on board were killed. Richie Valens , The Big Bopper , Buddy Hollie , and the pilot.

One freezing winter evening, back in the late '50s -- when Waylon played bass for rock-n-roller, Buddy Holly -- Waylon was going be on the small, ill-fated, plane that crashed and killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and P.J. Richardson (the "Big Bopper"). But Richardson, who was going to make the trip on an old converted school bus with no heater, had come down with the flu. So Waylon, knowing the plane was heated, generously gave his seat on the plane to Richardson so Richardson wouldn't have to ride in the cold bus. The seat exchange prompted Buddy to tease Waylon by saying "What the matter? Are you too chicken to fly?" Waylon replied that, no, he wasn't afraid to fly. Buddy then said, "Well, I hope you freeze in that old bus!" To which Waylon jokingly replied, "Oh yeah? Well, I hope your plane crashes!" Less than 15 minutes after take off, Buddy's plane crashed and killed everyone on board. Waylon has said those parting words to Buddy haunted him for many years after.

I still want to see you react to Phil Keaggy, who is amazing. But maybe after that you can check out some live Ricky Skaggs, a virtuoso on the guitar, banjo, and mandolin and a bit of a showoff.
