You have started down an amazing rabbit hole. Every song by her is beautiful. My person favorite song by her is Boulder to Birmingham, which she wrote after the death of Gram Parsons. That song will bring a tear to the eye of anyone. EmmyLou is also known for her ability to sing harmony. Check out anything by the group "The Trio", which was her with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton. Another song with her singing harmony is her, with another song writer, Iris Dement, sining a song by Iris, "Our Town", which you could do as reaction to Iris as a songwriter, and get to enjoy the subtle contributions of EmmyLou as a bonus.

50 years ago, I bought my first Emmylou Harris album. She has continued to deliver great performances through the years. Willy Nelson once said, "There are two kinds of men. Those who are in love with Emmylou Harris, and those who haven't met her yet." Others have mentioned The Trio, but she has done other collaborations. The performances with Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) are lovely and also worth a review (e.g., "If This is Goodbye"). My favorite EH songs include "Boulder to Birmingham," "Wayfaring Stranger," "C'est La Vie," "Pancho and Lefty," "Easy from Now On," "Red Dirt Girl," "Tougher Than The Rest," ...well too many to list.

Emmylou Harris is one of my favorite singers of all time, and Rodney Crowell is one of the truly great songwriters of all time. I went to an outdoor Emmylou concert in the late 70s. She sang for nearly three hours straight in 90-degree heat and kept the crowd mesmerized. This was a melancholy song but Emmylou could really rock out, and her Hot Band was the best backup band since the Eagles served as Linda Ronstadt's backup band.

Emmylou Harris is an all time great. You can hear her in a lot of places, like on half the songs on Bob Dylan's "Desire" album. She can do a mean honkeytonk vibe ("Two More Bottles of Wine"). She can do Old Timey sounding Country (Hello Stranger). She can do full on 70's country with all the vocal trimmings (her studio version of "Sweet Dreams" is off the charts, vocally). She can do Lou Reed (check out the video of her and Sheryl Crow doing "Pale Blue Eyes"). She can do anything. Listen to her and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straights doing the 9-11 inspired "If this is Goodby." She is, simply put, among the best to ever do it.

Have loved Emmylou since we were both young. A contemporary of her you might enjoy is Nancy Griffith singing "Love at the Five and Dime" in 1986 (I think) It's an ode to young love becoming old and Woolworths worldwide. It also has an entertaining prologue. Good reaction. Glad you enjoyed this one.

Also, "love at the five & dime," later recorded by Kathy Mattea which became a big hit for her.
And that brings us to other songs by Kathy
"Eighteen wheels and a dozen roses, "
      "Where have you been."
      "455 rocket" & many more.
Emmylou did a great version of
"Mr. Sandman" with Dolly Parton & Linda Ronstadt singing backup. My favorite by her has to be "Two more bottles of wine," & "(You never can tell) C'est la Vie."
Yes, please do songs from the trio albums.
Start with their first official video. They did a cover of the song "To know him is to love him."
Listen to every song on trio 1 & trio 2. You won't be disappointed. They sound like ANGELS together!

Rodney Crowell later is married to Roseanne Cash (Johnny Cash’s daughter), and they wrote together, too. You might check out Roseanne Cash’s 1980s stuff. She’s got a great train song that’s more upbeat: “My Baby Thinks He’s a Train.” Maybe about Rodney.

@ Today I guess this music would be called Americana, but back then it rested on the porous boundary between country and rock. Emmylou was and is a great singer (I saw her perform in 2023), but I prefer Roseanne as an artist. Her songs are personal, poetic, and musically interesting. Her (sort of) half-sister Carlene Carter is also great, if you want to go further into the Carter-Cash musical lineage. Carlene is the daughter of June Carter-Cash and the granddaughter of the sublime Maybelle Carter (of the absolutely essential Carter Family). Since you’re from the UK, you might be amused to hear that Carlene was once married to Nick Lowe. Small world, indeed.

Tulsa Oklahoma is my hometown, during the 70s it was the center of counterculture and music. The Tulsa sound was a major music genre in the 70s it started when Eric Clapton covered J. J. Cale's "After Midnight", Leon Russell, and Elven Bishop, were major purveyors of the sound. Tulsa Sound was covered by many artists. Leon Russell turned and old church into the Church Studio, about 2 miles from my house, and founded Shelter Records. Eric Clapton and George Harrison would frequently come to record with Leon. If you lived in Tulsa in the 70s and you didn't have a Leon story, people question if you live there. One time I went to a health food restaurant for some fresh yogurt, while we were setting there Leon and Eric Clapton came in and had a seat toward the back, I freaked out, my buddy grabs my arm and says, "Don't act weird, you'll run them off" however I did say, "Hi" to them when I went to the bathroom. Enough of Tulsa.
Emmy Lou has a haunting voice; it makes me think of places far away. Her and Gram Parson's version of "Love Hurts" is incredible! And her work with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt sounds like a trio of angels.
This song speaks of the lonesome sound of a faraway train, it makes one long to travel, someplace away from the pain. Her voice here reflects that far away feeling. I hear a train whistle sometimes and I just want to leave all behind, the bills, the relationships, just go and maybe start again new. I can hear this longing in her voice.

You should start at her beginning album, not one from years later. PIECES OF THE SKY 1974. You inevitably be introduced to Gram Parsons. Then the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers and that first generation of Southern California Western musicians. PIECES is a fine album with quite a few of her 'standards'. In that era, Top 40 Radio was failing - failing to deliver what money-spending fans wanted. They were turning to "FM Radio" which was freed from the restrictions of the 3-minute hit. And playing a list of a few songs, over and over, droning them, dulling out audiences to them. The FM Radio success was starting from California ("Pacifica-FM Radio") and across college campuses who generally had at least one student-radio station with ZERO formats. These were from the mid-60s forward, and by the late '60s, rock music was splintering so much and "wooden" or acoustic music was a Big Deal. Then Country-Folk-Rock became popular. Emmylou was one of those 'children' delivering great music to those fans.

Listen to Emmylou as she matures thru the decades - her voice has definitely changed, mellowed, matured, softened. She's had an amazing career as an artist, both solo or with her band, and as a duet/harmony partner with other artists. It's also worth noting that her band has consisted of some of the most incredible artists in country/Americana music - Rodney Crowell, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Albert Lee, Emery Gordy, Hank Devito and several others. Most of her hits are written by someone else, but do check out "Red Dirt Girl", where she wrote the whole album.

Technically speaking that would be country music rather than folk music. The name "Hot Band" came from management saying that she needed a hot band behind her for touring. When she had the band put together she referred to them as the "Hot Band" kind of out of a humorous response. Her lead guitarist is a favorite guitarist of fellow Brit Eric Clapton. To hear some of why he's a favorite among country and other guitarists check out Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band playing "Luxury Liner".

Emmylou is great and when singing with others (Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstad)does beautiful harmony. One of my favorites that she does is 'Wayfaring Stranger.' Which takes me on a tangential thought to Trace Adkins' version of "wayfaring stranger" It ticks all the boxes: classic folk, guitar, country music. th-cam.com/video/iPpV1Wcsgk0/w-d-xo.html

I’ve loved her album “Luxury Liner” since it came out in late ‘70s. Hard to pick a fav, but the title track and “C’est La Vie” are special.
Rodney Crowell has since become a Big Name performer in his own right. As you noticed, there’s Several members of this band who became known on their own.
And yes, Emmylou is still a superstar who still sounds terrific. You should find a current photo, she’s also still gorgeous and immediately recognized.
Speaking of trains, surely by now you’ve listened to “You Never Call Me By My Name (the perfect country song)” by David Lee Coe? It’s hilarious!

I am writing you from that "Nothing Place", Tulsa, OK, to once again suggest John Prine at The House of Strombo. I listen to it weekly. It's literally underground (in Strombo's basement).
As for Tulsa, it has quite a history in American popular music. Bob Wills was in residence for years, made Cain's Ballroom a landmark. Leon Russell held court here for decades; Tom Petty checked in on his way from FL to CA. Roy Clark lived and died here. Sam Kinison preached and was buried here (he did sing occasionally). Garth Brooks is from all around here. Weird Al filmed his movie here, and returns most years to play. And then ... there's Hanson ... yeesh.
Have to admit I have no idea what a "Tulsa Queen" is. Too scared to look into it LOL

Emmylou's box set is 1 of about 12 that I have. I should've added her to list I left a while back when you asked about other female singers. You can also add Dooly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle - Loretta's sister, Sylvia, Tammy Wynette, Pam Tillis - Mel Tillis' daughter, Roseanne Cash - Johnny Cash's daughter, REBA, Patty Loveless - Loretta and Crystal's cousin, and more.

Your commentary is valuable and incisive and would be extremely beneficial to this exploration of a truly great artist, if you'd save it for the right moment(s).
