i dont know if its right but ...i do let my dog b a dog i dont always want my dogs by my side i allow them to do sniffs in front an behind an i think you gotta remember a dogs a dog so let them have some freedom to b that dog .... maybe am wrong but my dogs .....
I've tried to educate myself on dog training by watching videos on TH-cam and I think you are by far the trainer that explains everything more clearly and in detail. Really appreciate the content you do and I wish someday I can effort do your full program.thank u, I understand how much effort it goes into creating this content.🙏
I 100% agree. I have seen the jerk them up short videos, I’ve seen the keep them at your side at all cost videos, this guy seems to be really considering what the dog needs versus just what the person needs.
I am teaching my dog that he can only go into ‘smelling and mooching’ mode when I give the command ‘break’. I need to keep him very close in certain situations, such as a blind corner, passing other dogs etc. However, every chance we get he sniffs and mooches. Makes our walks stress free and enjoyable.
You're absolutely right! That's exactly how i walk with my dog. He's got a command for heeling and we're doing this for a few minutes, then walk like you did in this video for ~20min. , then again a short episode of heeling and so on. Here in Germany i often hear that sniffing is like " reading newspaper".
That's probably fine for a well mannered and socialised dog. My dog is an old rescue that is incredibly aggressive towards other dogs and animals, so I train her to check in with me before doing anything. I want to be the boss so she knows I'm in control in any given situation and she doesn't need to react to the dog across the street.
I totally agree. I also include the "not crossing mindlessly in front of me" as part of the "not pulling" but overall it's a very loose leash walking and listen to me when i ask sometimes to ignore a dog, person, object on the ground etc. Leash is really to protect them from the environment when i cannot have them off leash. Great video again
I really feel like when you make a dog be heeling, training constantly, it almost takes the life out of a dog. It seems like they’re there only to please you and that’s the only purpose they think they have, and they don’t look happy to me
I am 6 wks into life with my first rescue and so have been watching a LOT of different dog training material this past month. I've really found your training helped the penny drop around loose lead walking and have seen some real progress over the past week. It feels amazing so thank you 😊 ✌️❤
There are times I want my dog at a heel and other where he can just walk around depends on where and what we are doing. I’m also really proud that my dog has heel down at 5 months old he has a real need to please and get that treat
Shoutout to the best dog training content on youtube. You’ve completed changed how I think loose leash walking should be and my dog appreciates that. He is walking better than ever and is turning 4 in May!
Agreed when I train my dog as long as he won’t pull and he always has me in the back of his mind so when he does get distracted I can easily get him to focus on me
I completely agree. Over 10 years as a trainer, I think there is a place for loose leash walking and heel. Most of my clients find loose leash walking more practical and less stressful to learn how to do.
Another great playthrough. Based on your pacing and length of gameplay my only tip so far for the next video is please explore as much as possible 😉 Keep up the great work 👍🏾
I like this way, this is how i like to do. As long as they r not eating food or poop from outside or pulling hard is fine. They will always have to give u so kind of pull as they move towards where they want to be at; & I do like them to be able to choose where they want to walk & smell for most of the time if there is is not a danger or place they cant be at.
Time and place. There are times when we do what you described and there are times when it is safer to have the dog by our leg. It is good to have a dog that understand both
I like this. Similar to Michael Ellis's stance, that a walk should be an enriching and fun thing for a dog, not restricting them to just this little box at the owner side.
I used to be like this but I couldn’t deal with my dog weaving right and left in front of me almost tripping me up so now she has to stay on one side. It’s not a perfect heel, she can still go sniff and have some distance away from me but it’s safer and more relaxing for me this way.
This is the only way that works for my dog. He's a young, stubborn Spitz breed and insisting on close heel all the time just makes him more defiant. Do whatever as long as you don't pull, heel for a bit when I need you to works best.
Yes and No. Yes, when im walking on public sidewalks and heeling as best he can. Helps me not have to reel them in when they see an aggressive dog or people. Where i live, i have an are we go where its a natural sidewalk, where i give him the full lead to do w/e he wants. He understands the difference too. He knows when he is feee and isnt.
The only reasons I find a heel useful while walking is when crossing streets, passing other dogs that may be reactive, or walking through large packed crowds. If you’re just going for a walk, let the dog sniff stuff, it’s better for them.
heeling should be used for specific situations like crossing streets or avoiding other dangers, not the full walk! Whats the point of walking a dog if they dont have the ability to explore! Good on you for letting your dog be a dog
I don't think a lot of trainers do keep their dog in heel 100% of the time. I feel like they have the heel command but then they also have the Go-Free command.
Completely agree. What's the point of getting a dog if you don't let it be a dog? 😂 Ok if you need it to do a job, it might need to know how to heel. But you don't need to enforce that on casual walks right?
My dog is great at loose leash when it's me and him but when my son is with me, he doesn't know who to follow and just goes kinda crazy running between and around the 2 of us.
You know when I ran across this I thought you were sent to me by angels. My 5 year old doodle is more attentive when walking off leash. I still am afraid she may take off running if she sees another animal.
I'm fine with this, EXCEPT in cases of leash reactive aggression! If this is the issue, YOU MUST HAVE THE DOG IN A SOLID PERFECT HEEL TO CONTROL AND CORRECT! You can not work with these issues in loose leash walking. Under that issue, the sniffing, etc, that is only allowed upon a release word. Then it's back into heel. If your dog is social and relaxed, this is fine. IT ALL DEPENDS!
Interesting perspective. To me it depends on the dog - or that’s what I thought. I have a dog I don’t mind if she walks out front. I have another (reactive GSD cross) that I think is a bit insecure aggressive so I stay out front so he knows I have the situation under control and he doesn’t need to protect me. I think I will work more on our relationship and gradually increase his freedom when he trusts me more. Interesting perspective!
I cant do this. My goldens will eat something off the ground if given the chance. 😂 We have gotten some expensive vet bills. Leave it only gets you so far unless eating something deliciously gross is better than listening.
Because when you walk quickly down a hill and the dog crosses from left to right and you trip over their leash and biff it. It’s good to teach them to stay on one side. Ask me how I know 😂
@fiig5196 Lol! Yeah I have 3 I walk together and the ziggy zagging is a recipe for “biffing it” and spending more time untangling the leashes than a body should have to! Thanks for the laugh 🤣
You can heel and give breaks to your dog every 5-10 minutes so he can sniff, mark, pee, etc. When i want to give my dog a break i just tell her to sit, watch (look me in the eyes) and the i say “break”. I think your way of doing it is fine but it may be risky in crowded places, when there are a lot of street dogs around that may attack your dog, may be sick or have parasytes on them that can be transmitted to your dog, when you have a small breed dog or a puppy that can be stolen pretty easily by someone in a motorbike or a car, etc. For me and my clients; it just works better to let heel be the standard and when i say “break” they can be dogs and do dog stuff while in a safe area with no dogs or cars around and with some good amount of space, trees and bushes so they can smell, track, etc. I live in Mexico, street dogs are eveywhere, also 5/10 people have reactive chihuahuas or mix breed small dogs looking for a fight, etc, most streets arent as calm or safe as we would like them to be so heel is the safest way of walking your dog around here in my experience.
I agree....... but.... 😊 I want my dog to leave the house in a calm state FIRST. This, I believe, will translate to a calmer state in our walk. ALSO, 😁.... Yes!!!
I don't want a robot
I want a dog
I completely agree! My parents are trying to train their dog but they want her right by their side and she looks miserable
You're absolutely right! That's exactly how i walk with my dog. He's got a command for heeling and we're doing this for a few minutes, then walk like you did in this video for ~20min. , then again a short episode of heeling and so on.

I do this and encourage this to all my clients, well done. This is how it is supposed to be, the walk is about the dog, not the handler.
I am 6 wks into life with my first rescue and so have been watching a LOT of different dog training material this past month. I've really found your training helped the penny drop around loose lead walking and have seen some real progress over the past week. It feels amazing so thank you 😊 ✌️❤
I agree totally , let the dog be a dog not a robot 😂

Thank you for this video! I thought I was doing something wrong with my dog that kept doing exactly what the dog in this video does. Thank you!!!

I love hearing that 🙌

I agree let ur dog enjoy being a dog👍🏻👏🏻💯💙
❤❤❤❤❤

Shit that just made total sense to me and I agree to let a dog be a dog. Excellent
I want my dog to be able to heal, but most of the time I feel the same. The walk is for him. I want him to get the most out of it.
Time and place. There are times when we do what you described and there are times when it is safer to have the dog by our leg.
It is good to have a dog that
understand both
That's exactly what he said

I have training walks and fun walks. Fun walks they can go where they want as long as they don’t pull. Training walks they are in a heel.
Definitely agree! Free mode is not working mode. I don't believe a dog is happy being in the working mode all the time.
This is the only way that works for my dog. He's a young, stubborn Spitz breed and insisting on close heel all the time just makes him more defiant. Do whatever as long as you don't pull, heel for a bit when I need you to works best.

YAY! AGREE!

This is how I walk my dog. I think she enjoys it more, getting to sniff around her territory and all that while we walk.
Yes 🙌🏼 think this is great. I will watch the loose leash video. Thank you 😊
I completely agree and started doing that with my 4 month old puppy!
I absolutely agree!
heeling should be used for specific situations like crossing streets or avoiding other dangers, not the full walk! Whats the point of walking a dog if they dont have the ability to explore! Good on you for letting your dog be a dog
I feel the same way i just don't want my dog to not pull

What breed is that dog? I have the same one
If I haven’t found it yet, I apologize, but if you haven’t done one, please do one on how to make them come back to you when they’re off leash.
My issue is my crazy shepsky does well alone, but if I am walking my other two with him, he forgets I am there..
Completely agree. What's the point of getting a dog if you don't let it be a dog? 😂 Ok if you need it to do a job, it might need to know how to heel. But you don't need to enforce that on casual walks right?

I thought the definition of loose leash walking was just having a loose leash
I agree my dog doesn't pull he can do as he likes on a walk as long as he doesn't pull

Is there a dog walking and a dog training walk? Where they are well disciplined when thats nessesary
"Dont want them to pull" to be fair it dont pull hard but its still pulling, i understand you want your dog to be a dog, but just by those pulls it going harder if hes older and have bad hips etc.. the whole not walking in front is for other dumb dog owners that dont have controll of their dogs, if i haddent had my dog on the side be little to late to grab or pull back, for i didnt want to have to wurry stress of other dumbasses that want their dog to say hello, is not the dog i dont trust its the owners,
No and yes im not a dog trainer, just experance i had with alot of pepole that shuld not have dogs.
But yes everyone has their own with their dog training at things you do wuld not work for me but it works for you 😊
Why you dressed like a reject cop
