As an adult beginner skier myself, I've been binge watching these videos and Deb has such a natural gift for encouraging and explaining concepts to the adult beginner. I've applied some of her tips on piste and it paid off immediately. I feel like I'm finally enjoying the process of progression and it feels wonderful. Thanks so much for putting these videos out here on YT as I feel like it's hard to capture the adult beginner mindset or even explain it to ppl that had their first runs before their 5th birthday.

I went skiing for the first time ever at 36 earlier this year and can empathise hugely with this part of the lesson. My legs/skiis were doing exactly the same! It's really scary first tie around and committing to that outside leg not only feels counter intuitive, but the motion of speeding up as your turn down hill before controlling your speed by finishing the turn is really unnerving! I learnt at a resort in europe which had similarly steep sections and it was tough! i can't wait to try again but i can't lie, my confidence was knocked more than i thought it would be. i feel like it will get easier once that parallel comes in, but man its a leap of faith.

  • @Osnosis
    @Osnosis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Deb, to augment this lesson, I often have students turn their head ( I usually ski in front, like you here, and yell “look at me!). This prevents the looking downhill, freezing, and then picking up speed as they head down the fall line. I also explain, as you do here, that during the turn, which starts up high, you are only pointed straight downhill for a fraction of the time, so if they conceive of the full arc as one connected movement, they’ll envision the finish, rather than dropping out at the halfway mark!

Good instructions. I notice that when the student looks farther down to the next turn the movement becomes more natural and almost happen automatic. This lady does it very clearly for me. Look at her head and vision. These adults at that level are hard to teach. This lady was a nice student very honest and receptive. Good for her.

As an instructor, what I love about this is your keeping to one focus. The urge is to fix the other things that are going wrong but that would be so overwhelming to someone learning a new ski on a pitch that's scary to her. I've learned over the years that we don't have to (and can't!) fix everything at once.

A great coach is just the best thing to give you confidence. I love the fact that you said "don't judge yourself" to Kelly. We 're not perfect on every turn. That's why I also love your comment about not giving up on your turn. Dynamic balance is everything!

Totally agree! Although I've been skiing for a few years now, I don't get out enough to feel like I make a lot of ongoing progress. I also have a husband who wants me to accel at a pace quicker than I can -- plus I don't have his fearlessness. I LOVED hearing "don't judge yourself". I know exactly what Kelly was feeling and have to remember that for myself -- we all progress at our own pace. And at the "tender" age of 55....it's going to be a little different than if I were learning at 25 when I was still "invincible". Thank you @Deb Armstrong -- I have been watching your videos quite a bit lately to help inspire to move forward but I have a lot of probably less than quality tactics that I need to unlearn. I love watching Kelly's progress. As a ski instructor I am always looking for better way to teach and ski. When Deb says to open the door and allow the inside leg to soften, I had a huge Ah ha moment. What a beautiful metaphor! I often struggle to help a student figure out how let go of the inside ski. This is one of the first big stepping stones to more advanced skiing as we learn to let go of the mountain, the wedge for a bit, and trust that our turn will slow us down instead of our dear friend the wedge. Thanks Deb for your awesome content! I try to channel your wisdom every day I teach!

OMG that looks SO steep 😱 I can parallel turn but not in such steep slope. I need a coach like you to remove my huge mental block of being terrified of these steep slopes, Deb. I fell once while attempting such slope, I couldn't get up and needed my husband to rescue me while having a panic attack, absolutely terrified (every tie I tried to get up, I would slide more while falling)and I was sliding on my butt until reaching a place I felt safe to ski again, while my husband skied following me and carrying my skis. Never tried again and stay on the greens. I'm not afraid of falling in figure skating, I fall while practicing my jumps and if I get. mental blocks my amazing coach is the best to remove it. My husband is so much fun to ski with, but not the teacher/coach type at all 😂 short patience!

Hi Deb. Congratulations on your Gold medal! And Kelly is really improving nicely. Well done Kelly! As an instructor in Mammoth I do question your focus on being on the front of the feet. IMHO too many new skiers are constantly told to "get forward" on their skis and never change to a more balanced weight on the entire length of the foot enabling pressure on the entire length of the edge. The sidecut of the tip of today's skis don't require much forward pressure at all. You are a far better skier than I am but I wanted to share my thoughts with you. P.S. I had a chance to meet and ski with Cooper when she was on the US Demo Team. Great skier, very friendly, and very cute! Hats off to you for your patience and helping skiers smile! 😎 Love your channel! 👏

The problem is that beginners that have been taught the wedge tend to lean backwards on steep slopes to be able to brake. Thats why some people directly teach skiing parallel (and only use wedge outside of slopes) such that this leaning backwards to brake is not in their head. And we need the forward weight only when initiating a new turn (such that the back of the inside ski is light), the weight gradually goes more to center foot when the edge is engaged in the turn to get the full edge. But that is only relevant for carving, so irrelevant for beginners

I taught myself to ski parallel on my second day skiing as I just found snow ploughing gave me sore thighs. Like you instructed I skied slightly up hill to slow down at the end of the turn but I did fall quite a bit while turning due to not going back to a plow while turning. I just did this over and over again and as time went by I fell less and less. Its best learnt on short narrow skis as I found when I progressed to longer skis I started falling more during the turn until I got used to them in the same way as I did with my short narrow skis.

One thing I taught myself early on when I fell was to spin myself around and dig my ski in to stop like a buildozer blade and many years later I found out what I had done to stop myself is a technique called "Self Arrest". I am actually surprised this is not taught in ski schools as it would help people lose the fear of falling a long way assuming they don't lose both skis.

If you’re well versed in Nordic skiing, maybe try a telemark rental / lesson, if available. Could be a more graceful transition for your particular case since you have no issue for XC. Telemark typically puts less stress on the joints/tendons and more stress on the musculature in between (esp. thigh muscles).
Cannot go wrong either way...skiing alpine, tele, riding snowboard, etc. Good luck. Have fun. Pain is not fun, so listen to your body and take slow & easy. With the inside “wing” you are pointing to the inside of the turn, which helps to start the mental image of the full turn. When the inside wing is tipped, the hip will move to the outside of the turn, allowing for more proper angulation and weight will move to the outside ski.

    • @rea1836

My hip was over the downhill ski and the knees inside the circle - that worked! Thanks.

Hi Deb I really appreciate what you're doing here, I have a couple of questions Im hoping you can help me with.... I've been snowboarding most my life and I've been teaching my 5 year old daughter how to ski for just over 3 years now and I'm just not quite sure how to help her figure out how to turn her inside ski from a wedge to parallel after coming out of the fall line.... The last couple of times we've gone skiing it's been a bit hard packed making it to where her wedge is less effective at slowing her down. While on steep terrain she gets heel heavy and falls on her butt because the wedge is so big, this leads me into my second question. When she falls on her butt and still has her skis in a pizza the only way I know how to help her get back up is to pick her up I'm not sure what steps you would take to help get her skis parallel to the hill and parallel to each other. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you so very much 🤗

This is a nice way of teaching and learning.
May I just point out, that if you start a turn from side slipping, or standing with parallel skis, you should have a real ski-lead of the uphill ski. You do this Deb but you say nothing to Kelly about it and so she does not recognize it. This ski-lead creates a separation, makes your hips to face the fall-line more and it makes the following turn much easier to do.
