    I am 45 years old and I am going to ski for the first time in my life in a few days (Idaho), I have been watching your coaching videos again and again and again and again...LOL I have spent HRS of video instruction and TH-cam videos, and let me tell you something, you are the BEST! I wish I could have YOU as my instructor for that first day that is getting closer and closer!!!

      @@DebArmstrongSkiStrong Deb, it was a memorable day in my life. I was a little insecure because of my age... and my instructor was 80! (an outstanding skier!) I did great with the basics, and then the steeps ate me alive lol. I really struggled with turning on steps (fear was a factor). I took a beating real good a few times, but never gave up and kept trying. The inside leg and drag on the turn was an issue. As I made some progress I went on my first cat track runs to gain confidence and get some mileage. My feet hurt really bad (plantar pain) and my legs too. As I am making progress I am finding I need to exercise my legs in order to prepare for better ski days and less pain. Last night I had to quit early because of feet and leg pain... I hope it will get better.
      Thanks for your reply Deb. ~ Cheers!

    Some of my best memories of being a ski instructor was seeing the progression from someone who skied with a wide tentative snowplough type skier to a more confident smaller wedge turn skier who could enjoy the mountain more and the views on offer rather than looking down at what they were trying to do aii the time. I do still miss those days !!

    Great video. You could tell Kelly was going to be great watching her walk up the hill. I especially liked that you allowed her to get familiar and comfortable with the fall-line and just let her go (quite fast) instead of always showing her how to stop. She really listened to you and stayed neutral and tall in those boots. Teacher and student both stars.

Born and raised in Hawaii then moved to Florida for 20 years, I didn't know what I was missing! I felt like Bambi sliding on the snow 🤣 We skied 4-5 hours a day for 3 days. I loved it! I wish I could spend the day with you, but your videos are the next best thing! I'm determined to become a very good skier before my time here is over. I'm athletic (run, swim, cycle, yoga, weights). You're videos are really helping my wife and I out with our transition from snowboarding to ski's. We've been snowboarding for close to 20 years and decided this year was time for a change. We have the confidence as far as trusting that once we are on a certain edge that the ski's will take us in the intended direction, but getting those motions down and learning how to achieve those edge transfers has been the tricky part. These little exercises you have been using to work with your students have been a HUGE help! :)

    Deb, love your content! I have been trying to figure out how to teach my 6 and 7 year children. As I kid, I was just let loose on a 300 foot hill in Indiana, never had an instructor and I got better skiing with good skiers that had lessons and skied out West. Then I got even better living out East at places like Snowshoe, WV. But I am not teacher like you! After a few more sessions with my kids at the hills in Wisconsin, I think I'll enroll them in a beginner course. But I am trying to get them to edging first. How do I make sure they get the most out of instructor time? By the way, your voice keeps reminding me of someone then it finally clicked tonight, you sound a lot like the actress Melissa McCarthy's voice. Hope you take that as a compliment! Love your energy!

      as for your 6 and 7 year old with an instructor. Straps, is that the harness? I like the harness but I would encourage you to not "control" things through the harness. encourage through your words, pick flat terrain so the child learns to turn for speed control, not snowplow down steep terrain. that does no one any favors. encourage turning, turn, turn, turn. that's the control and fun. straight down is scary, tiring, not skillful, etc. how is it coming along. Keep me posted. take care.

  • @sgavin111
    @sgavin111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Deb, first, I think you are brilliant! As a PSIA L2 working on L3, I have learned so much: from your choice of language to your terrain selection to your ability to translate difficult concepts into terms the student can digest. Minor question: when do you introduce proper arm/hand/pole placement? I noticed a lot of your beginners kind of drag their poles with arms down. Is it not beneficial to introduce that early as a way, among other things, to keep the COM in the right place? So much respect for you! Thank you!

    • @DebArmstrongSkiStrong
      @DebArmstrongSkiStrong  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question!!! not a firm right or wrong here but my take. I only have so much time with someone. I get right to the essence of what I think will take someone to the next level. If we were in a situation where it was a pole plant issue or some other arm issue holding someone back I would address it first. In my beginner and early intermediate level videos I can only address so much in a video because the video represents a lesson. I was skiing with someone today and their hands were at their waist, yet, like triage at an emergency room, her hands was not the problem, not the critical issue needing attention There were issues I wanted to address and that were more important. Arms are important and can be very important and also arms are not always the answer. hope this helps.
