    Justine's tennis was brilliant. She combined pure talent, agility and creativity. Billy Jean King called her the best player of her generation, Martina Navratilova considered her head and shoulders above the competition. John McEnroe said her tennis was the most beautiful to watch and described her backhand as the world's best, men and women combined. Justine's type of tennis is sorely missed in today's tennis, unfortunately.

      I agree that she's wonderful to watch and a brilliant tennis player in her own right..but certainly not the best, anyone who says so and disregarding Serena, is a subtle, closet racist for sure.

      @@angel91485 Sorry but that's ridiculous. I'm not a racist, not even a subtle one. I really don't think in terms of black and white. I'm talking tennis here. Justine compensated her physical 'shortcomings' by technically brilliant tennis. She was one of the few players to really challenge Serena. I have no problem admitting Serena is one of the greatest players ever, if not the greatest. Unfortunately, Justine had a much shorter career for physical and mental reasons. But she was brilliant, maybe one of the purest talents ever to grace the courts.

      @@angel91485erena is definitely the greater player at the end of the day, but hardcore tennis fans know that from a brief period from about 2003-2007, Justine was the best player in the world by a slight margin. Edging out rivals such as Clijsters, Capriati, and both Williams sisters. She was 5-2 against Serena during this time period. Perhaps the most competitive time in women’s tennis over the past 20 years. Serena has kept it up for way longer though. Henin is a tennis purist’s dream though, because she played a style almost completely non existent on the women’s tour. She was like a 5’3 female Federer.

      Evert played in a totally different era, wooden rackets. Sabatini got to be on something. Sabatini was a pretty teen girl and became a male-looking woman. Besides, her backhand was good but nowhere near a kill-shot. If Justin could get into a good position to execute her backhand, that shot would be a winner.

      Is she still around, Maria? I rather miss her. Although a 1 dimensional style i.e. "hitting big" she does execute it so well..Her forehand is a western grip based stoke trained to immaculate perfection which I would often like to refer to during my days as a tennisteacher for a picture perfect example. Very similair to the forehand of both Victoria Azarenka and (Marats sister) Dina Safina (unparallelled World Champion tennis DNA to be ever found among a brother and sister)

    • @hopscotch484
      @hopscotch484 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Ashutosh Mishra Yes absolutely. I suppose when you think of the power hitters she's not considered up there with Sharapova, Serena and Venus et al but I agree that her power in relation to size was far more impressive than anyone I've seen (except possibly camila giorgi)

    • @captainbryce1
      @captainbryce1 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Except that Henin didn't really lack power at all. Technically, she was one of the power hitters. Despite her small stature, she could hit the ball harder that many women who were larger than her. That's what enabled her to keep pace with players like Sharapova and Serena. Look at her matches against players like Hingis or Wozniaki where she overpowered them despite being smaller. Most of it had to do with her technique rather than the length of her arms or muscle weight. Justine had perfect timing off both wings. She knew exactly when to contact the ball in the center of the strings, and had an efficient follow-through motion that allowed her to hit the ball with pace and depth when she flattened it out. She also had a deceptively powerful serve for a woman her height, consistently serving into the 110s. That was really the difference between her and Hingis. They both had a lot of speed, touch, variety, good volleys, and a high tennis IQ. But Justine had the power to go with all of that which allowed her to compete with the big hitters for far longer than Hingis.

  • @dbj4th443
    @dbj4th443 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Henin's timing is impeccable. People always say that she is fast and one of the best backhand in tennis maybe the best single backhand in tennis but what she lacks in power and height is her impeccable timing even if the ball is coming really hard and fast

    Henin and Mauresmo were a breath of fresh air, in the mold of King, Goolagong, Navratilova, Novotna with *so* much variety in their games and they were a joy to watch with their gorgeous single handed backhands.
    There were (and still are, Ash Barty excepted) so many one dimensional players about and one of the most boring to watch for me was Sharapova. I laugh every time I hear about the "rivalry" between her and Serena Williams and when canny players like Henin were able to draw her towards the net and expose her limitations for what they were.

    Watching these two made me realize again how boring WTA is nowadays. The play style is SO homogenous with everybody playing this weird as powerful but somehow grindy tennis, and no new players have shown any form of consistency or star quality that's remotely close to the likes of what we saw back in the 2000s and early 2010s.

    I remember this match and to this day I still believe it slipped inbetween Sharapova's fingers. From what I remember Sharapova was out playing Justine at the end of the final set but a couple of close calls (that were proven to be inaccurate) damaged her momentum. And Justine was a pure talent and great competitor so it doesn't matter how much momentum you have if you give her opportunities she will 100% take them.
    There were a lot of close matches between these two, I find their rivalry fascinating. Henin tiny at 5'5, Sharapova huge at 6'2. Given the height difference and the fact Sharapova was playing some of the best tennis of her career when they played eachother, Justine deserves full credit for having such a dominant head to head against Sharapova with 7 wins to 3 losses.

Watching old matches of 2000s made me realise women tennis top 10 is so bad now. The ONLY mistake Henin made against Maria, was constantly getting the ball near her hitting zone!
    That's exactly Sharapova's weakness, making her move in combination of keeping the ball low!
    As soon as Henin starts to consistently keep the ball low, it's game over for Maria.

    It's one of those "What if" scenarios, but I really can't imagine Mauresmo defeating Henin had she been healthy and playing like this. It's a shame she was injured, and a shame she retired with just a couple games to play, but 2006 could have been such a gamechanger for Henin had she won more than 1 of the 4 Grand Slam finals she played in.

    As a French speaker, I noted how American and possibly British announcers couldn't pronounce "Henin" with even a modicum of the correct sound (which doesn't really exist in English). They settled on " 'enna". I ask myself, why does this particular name require an authentic accent? Why does it need to be pronounced in an attempt to simulate French? So don't do this with any other players? When's the last time you hear an announcer roll the R's in "Alcaraz" or "Rafael"? (Tho I did hear an announcer attempt the "th" sound for the "s" in Carlos' name). Announcers don't pronounce Medvedev like a Russian. They don't pronounce Sinner with an Italian R. Plus, find a French announcer who doesn't pronounce non-French names with a French accent. We can adapt a name to our native accents. It's not a crime.
    Apart from complaining, I must say that Henin is the most elegant player I've ever seen.
    And what does Sharapova's game remind me of?... let me see... oh, I know: The Metropolitan OPERA

    From a tactical point of view, the only thing Justine did wrong was play too much to Sharapova's hitting zone! She had to make her move just one or two extra steps. This would have greatly shortened the match? This could have been a two setter for Justine. Especially against a tall player like Maria. Most of the balls from justine were a bit too central. She should have made her run, especially on her backhand side, that's Maria's weakest shot on the run.

      @@anneneville6255 Not if you play it on the run and on full stretch!! It's extremely hard for a two hander to hit a backhand on the run while being stretched out of position and still push out the needed precision, power and angle. Something which is of no issue against a 1H'ed player.
