Mr David Wise - thank you so much for the music of my childhood. The whole Battletoads series are one of the best games I've ever played and I can still remember every single music track from all of these games.
it's a little bit difficult because games don't always list who did what, you see 2 or 3 composers on a game's credits, but then not what they did, some can be found with some research but it seems like others are nowhere to be found
I love the idea, but the other problem is that if you eliminate the 1 per franchise rule and make it 1 game rule instead, you have a few composers that were so entrenched in one series that half the compositions would be from that franchise that it would make more sense just to make it best of that franchise (ie. I bet Nobuo Uematsu's list would easily have 5/10 from Final Fantasy)
The entire list could be from Tropical Freeze imo. I mean, talk about creativity with the Frozen Fruits world of music. I've never heard anything like those songs, and they are amazing.
Josiah Ferrell Totally agree with you. I live the first two DKC games, but Tropical Freeze might be my favorite soundtrack in a Donkey Kong Country game.
I'm amazed we didn't hear Stickerbrush Symphony which is sometimes called "the best SNES track" (hello Toby Fox), but I remember David Wise recently telling that his favourite track from DKC2 was Forest Interlude. Also, some of the arrangements from Tropical Freeze have so much DKC2 callbacks, but with a much better sound quality, it's a treat to the ears!
Great list. David Wise was the man. That Roger Rabbit track is a nice rendition. I remember seeing the movie again a few years ago, and immediately recognized the theme when Jessica confronts Eddie in his apartment. My personal favorite of Wise's work is the Stage 2/High Score theme from Super Glove Ball. It got that ethereal vibe like NES Tetris' "Theme 3," but with more punch.
DKC 1&2 are all-time best game soundtracks of all time. It's been like 30 years and that shit still slaps even outside of video games. We put it on in the house all the time.
with the next top 10 being "released on Halloween" Im going to assume you meant horror themes in general, so: Super Castlevania IV - The Chandeliers Zombies ate my neighbors - Curse of the Tongue Super Metroid - Wrecked Ship Clay Fighter - Haunted House (Ickybod Clay/Blob battle theme) Super Mario World - Ghost House Secret of Mana - Ceremony Donkey Kong 64 - Creepy Castle Tiny Toon Adventures - Boss Castle (ie. Stage 1-3 and stage 3-3) Tales Of Phantasia - Dark Cave Super Ghouls and Ghosts - Haunted Graveyard (I love how Mega Man 7 had this as an Easter Egg on Shade Man's level) Picking the song from the Castlevania franchise was a tough call, You really could pick anything, so Im sure something from this franchise will make the list.
I wasnt even sure if there was 10 Halloween related games (or even games that have Halloween or pumpkins in them) when I made these suggestions. Thats why I generalized my list, I figured anything haunted, spooky, creepy, etc; a music track you could easily play on Halloween, Friday the 13th, or during some type of horror marathon would be fair game.
It's a shame the Diddy Kong Racing music in this list isn't Darkmoon Carverns theme, which is much better. But I think was an amazing decision to choose Mining Melancholy instead Stickerbush Symphony in DKC 2. In my opinion, of course.
No. god no. #9 was literally perhaps my most hated video game song of all time. Seriously, it's the stuff of nightmares. I had no idea it was composed by Wise. I would have rather not learned that fact.
Another great vid I did not know that wise Did wizards and warriors iron sword and marble madness I played the hell out of those games with my friend as a kid always loved the music always thought dk was his most iconic music but those are pretty iconic and nostalgic for me hands down And with a listen to tracks like aquatic ambience you can hear the habit he has had his whole career of cascading melody Very cool and trance like Thanks for the vid !!! Much respect for David wise
So many tracks to choose from. How do you pick just 10? I'm not as familiar with his more recent work but it still sounds great from the few tracks I've heard. Seriously though I think I could easily create a Top 50 list. Some will say DKC 2 was his magnum opus and I agree. Every track from that game is amazing.
If the next list is halloween themes then I'd pick either Pumpkin Hill or Death Chamber from Sonic Adventure 2. Also Burning Halloween Town from Death Smiles
Man David Wise, is such a awesome, and cool dude like he really seems to enjoy his job when it comes to making music which gives me undying respect for the man, and when he dies just like Iwata, it isn’t going to be the same without him, plus he is no doubt one of the biggest figures in the video music composing business, and it clearly shows, but even though he has nothing to prove i feel he’s always trying to outdo himself to me anyway. That being said my top 3 picks i would have to say. Number 3: Fear Factory. Number 2: Forest Interlude/Minning Melancholy. Number 1: Stickerbush Symphony.
I would've chose the stage 5 theme from Battletoads & Double Dragon as my favorite from that game and Forest Interlude from DKC2 instead of Mining Melancholy, and number 1: The Pause Beat from Battletoads (NES)! Ok, no xD
The pause beat almost made an honorable mention, and I actually only took it out at the very last second just because it seemed like there were too many Battletoads themes
Another good list. So many great tracks from the DK series to Marble Madness stage 2. Glad to see the Rodger Rabbit NES theme. I was playing LA Noire the other day and thought a remake of the NES game in that style would be cool. Side note, you might like my video I did for fun called Pure Gaming Moods.
Music on carts really aren't compressed though. They can't be. Even compressed audio even for small audio bits take up large fractions of those cats. The infamous SEGA intro on Sonic takes up like half the cart space and it's only 3 seconds long. What's going on is much like Midi and sound card on a computer, strings of code are instructing the sound processor in the SNES to play specific notes, on specific channels, on specific settings, with specific effects like waves and fades. So with the code instructing the sound processor to play x sound, it's playing true audio, not compressed, and only just a few bites. As storage size increased in games, audio engineers no longer had to program the sound processor, and instead were able to use actual recorded audio and sample off that... Which were usually compressed. So in an ironic twist of fate, the bigger the storage limitations grew, the more often you'd find compressed audio.
you can download software titled "SNES SPC700 Player" and then download spc file from a place like zophar.net ... load the spc into the player and then you can improve the sample rate, bit rate and more... then export each individual track, load in multi-channel mixing software, mix the levels to how you want it. some people do this and then claim "remaster" and share the music files. i did it for a 10 second clip --- hope that helps
DKC2 just has too good of a soundtrack. Personally I'd go with Stickerbush Symphony or Lockjaw's Saga, not that Mining Melancholy is bad, it's up there too, but that whole soundtrack is like top 5 game soundtracks of all time That wouldn't be a bad list either, just probably more than top 5
I’d honestly put it in 2nd place, along with Forest Interlude, and Stickerbush Symphony/Underwater Ambience, in 1st place, but i definitely feel like Stickerbush Symphony, would beat out Underwater Ambience.
A Top 10 topic could be "Chase Themes" with the parameters that the chase should occur during most of the stage and a person, creature, or object should be approaching the player (or the player should be chasing the another character). Some examples include: *"Crash Dash, Crash Crush, Un-Bearable" from Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (PS1) th-cam.com/video/AFZ1bww2Ou4/w-d-xo.html *"Palace Road" from Mega Man X7 (PS2) th-cam.com/video/HxZv1iOrtdI/w-d-xo.html *"Doomsday Zone" from Sonic & Knuckles (GEN) th-cam.com/video/7FAffWEmB3I/w-d-xo.html
@Thomas Pena Mining Melachonly reminds me of it cause of the drums thing at the beginning and the way it goes, also maybe cause that song sounds kinda melancholic to me.
Its always subjective, I dont expect all my suggestions on there, as some of my suggestions are Japan-Only and unheard of, but I throw them in anyways. Most of my video/computer game knowledge comes from C64, NES, SNES, and N64, the next person might know more about Playstation games, when Ive NEVER owned a Playstation in my lifetime and know little about the games themselves. Everyone has a different video/computer game background on here, so its always good to try to get everyone in on it, and being a good sport about what is finally picked.
Hey Uncanny X, could you do a 33rd episode of "Oddly Familiar", except with a part where Sonic Rush's "Ethno Circus" theme, composed by Hideki Naganuma, sounds oddly familiar to Jet Set Radio Future's "Oldies But Happies" theme, composed by Hideki Naganuma?
I dont know about personal picks per se. Normally one of my picks makes his list. I dont expect all of them on there, as I normally like to put in an obscure Japan-only pick in there
Dkc2 music is legendary 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Aquatic ambiance
Mr David Wise - thank you so much for the music of my childhood. The whole Battletoads series are one of the best games I've ever played and I can still remember every single music track from all of these games.
Surprised Stickerbush and Sog-Gee's Realm from Snake Pass didn't even get an honorable mention.
omg sog gee's realm YEEESSS
also no star fox adventures
Great episode. Would love seeing more composer specials like this.

it might be even higher than that, possibly 9 out of 10 lol.. some of that FF music is on another level
@@uncannyx Especially One Winged Angel from FF7. Nobuo Uematsu really went full bore on that track.
I’m a little concerned that there’s nothing from Tropical Freeze on here.
If David Wise is watching this list, he'd give this channel his stamp of approval. Can't wait for your next top 10 list!
I tweeted out a link and tagged him, let's hope he sees it!
Intro tune 1 from DKC 3 is actually Aquatic Ambiance, just with different tonalities and of course, super compressed
Weird music choices but no doubt David Wise is the best. Hope he got a lot of awards and $$$ all these years
yeah these are very wierd indeed
I'm amazed we didn't hear Stickerbrush Symphony which is sometimes called "the best SNES track" (hello Toby Fox), but I remember David Wise recently telling that his favourite track from DKC2 was Forest Interlude.

House Theme #3 from A Nightmare on Elm Street is highly underrated.
Elm Street is godly.
Stickerbrush Symphony is my favorite.
Great list. David Wise was the man.

you are close, but it's not top 10 horror themes! the very last portion of your quote is along the lines of what it is

Thats why I generalized my list, I figured anything haunted, spooky, creepy, etc; a music track you could easily play on Halloween, Friday the 13th, or during some type of horror marathon would be fair game.
Aquatic Ambiance was the only reason I enjoyed the water levels in in the DKC games 🤣🤣🤣
Omg! I loved his music from the DKC series. I had no idea that he worked on so many other game ost!
Aww nothing from Tropical Freeze :(
David wise is a legendary composer of video games
No wonder I loved the Battletoads vs Doube Dragon theme. Wise is a legend
David wise...the best... 👍🇩🇴
This must have been a hard list to make; so many masterpieces.
It's a shame the Diddy Kong Racing music in this list isn't Darkmoon Carverns theme, which is much better. But I think was an amazing decision to choose Mining Melancholy instead Stickerbush Symphony in DKC 2. In my opinion, of course.
You included Roger Rabbit but not Nightmare on Elm Street NES?
You’re damn right that’s number 1
DK2 Lockjaw’s Saga is definitely my number one!
To this day, these songs are in my head. This guy is enlightened.
You really should check out his work in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. ^^

Battle toads in battlemaniacs. Take your pick, any track.

nobody talks about mining melancholy and when I was really young it was my top 4
David wise is cold af
I may be biased from childhood, but um ... like DKC forever!
DKC has some of the best music in all of gaming, we were lucky to grow up with this one!
You know you broke your "1 per game" rule on the honorable mentions, right?
Great list, btw.
we kinda throw the rules out for the honorable mentions
If the next list is halloween themes then I'd pick either Pumpkin Hill or Death Chamber from Sonic Adventure 2.
Also Burning Halloween Town from Death Smiles
That Battletoad's and Double Dragon almost sounds like Wild n Crazy Kids theme.
That Roger Rabbit track brings me to my childhood.
That yooka-laylee track sounds like a rehash of tropical freeze
I agree with wizards & warriors 2 title screen, back when I was a kid I would leave the game going just so I can hear it
Disco train and stickerbrush symphony are my favorite

Number 3: Fear Factory.
Number 2: Forest Interlude/Minning Melancholy.
Number 1: Stickerbush Symphony.
you can't go wrong with those 3 picks
shows how many good tracks he had made when I personally don't agree with even a single one of these
i'm f***ing impressed
People seem to forget about Star Fox Adventures. I think that soundtrack is 10/10.
WOW you guys get one billion points for including that Roger Rabbit song!
Great shit bruv
I would've chose the stage 5 theme from Battletoads & Double Dragon as my favorite from that game and Forest Interlude from DKC2 instead of Mining Melancholy, and number 1: The Pause Beat from Battletoads (NES)!
Ok, no xD
The pause beat almost made an honorable mention, and I actually only took it out at the very last second just because it seemed like there were too many Battletoads themes
i would add a Cobra Triangle song in it!
Music is not entirely subjective, you can ascertain the quality or lack thereof of a musical track and composition.

Not sure what it is, but from #10 I get a "Step It Up" by Stereo MCs kind of vibe. Either way, David Wise is definitely an amazing composer.
