Love the fact that you showed all the steps without any cut scenes, and that you showed all that you have to go through. Really informative, and not boring at all. I appreciate this video alot.
This is easily one of the best tutorials on youtube right now. So many people teach you the *procedure* for making an avatar which usually consists of download premade template/rig you don't understand then make edits you don't understand to get an avatar you barely understand. You actually start more or less from scratch and show us how to generate a rig and set it up to work in VR chat. Straight up downloaded your video so I can always have it for reference.
Quite an underrated guide since actually the newest Unity (and maybe even earlier) doesn't support SDK3 anymore. But thanks a lot because I really want to get into this type of stuff. Easy, simple, and you get to the point, keep up the great work!
I have been struggling so long with making my avatar for vrc and upon finding your tutorial I was so overjoyed because I was finally able to make my avatar work, thank you so much keep up the great work!
tutorials where it feels like one of your friends is explaining what to do are the perfect kind. needed a video like this so i could make an avatar for the quest
Very useful thank you! As my first video on avatar creation after getting my pc I’m very glad to have found this as it’s best guide I could find to date.
you cannot imagine the joy i had finding your tutorial. ive been struggling with making a vrchat avatar for weeks now because i keep finding outdated videos. unfortunately even though i followed your tutorial to the T im still running into a missing prefab issue. the model im using already has dynamic bones and stuff i just retextured it. im not sure what to do because no one seems to know whats going on with it
Thanks for the comment. The part about unity is that it tends to look for certain scripts and if there are missing ones then it likely to day that you have a missing prefab asset, but don't worry since some people such as me would ignore that warning and would still be able to upload the avatar to VRChat. If it prevents you from uploading then check on the right side of the unity project screen and look in the components where it says "avatar" and make sure it's set to the model that you're using. Also make sure it's set to humanoid and that the bones are fine. I hoped this helps and good luck on your projects.
how do i make sure bones show indefinetly? sometimes they'll go away. i can see the outline of them in the xray mode when on object mode, but they go away and are invisible when i go into object mode. what do i do?
good question, so the best way to see the bones most of the time is mainly through edit mode, but you can always play around with the 4 circles seen somewhere on the top right if you want to see the bones. One other way to select or see the bones is by selecting the armature of the model. Hoped this helps. Good luck.
make sure that the model isn't too big and one problem could be that the bones are not configured or mapped properly on the avatar. Another problem could be that that Unity does tend to have it's own problems. After making over 200 avatars, around 10% of the time Unity will crash, be corrupted, and have error signs that prevent you from uploading. But other than that, you will have a great time learning and creating amazing content. Good luck.
@@ajaxturmoil1589 I did manage to fix the issue, turns out that the Prefab added a default camera for some reason attatched to the player which I guess took over the view point. But thank you for the help!
Hey! I love your video! But I was wondering if you could upload a skin on vrchat? Because I tried and it’s not letting me (probably bc I tried on a Mac and don’t have a pc)
Sorry to hear that. Mac and PCs are two different universes but you can still make great content and upload avatars from a Mac. Keep doing your best and good luck on those avatar projects.
When i drag the VRCSDK to unity i get a error says (Assets\VRCSDK\Dependencies\VRChat\Editor\EnvConfig.cs(447,28): error CS0117: 'PlayerSettings' does not contain a definition for 'SetVirtualRealitySDKs') and idea how to fix this?
This was an awesome tutorial! My only question is that I downloaded a mode from sketchfab, and it didn’t come with all of the individual textures like yours did. Do I have to make all of them by hand?
sadly you might have to, but also check that there are textures that also can be used to that specific part of the model. EX: one texture is used for both the arm and legs and etc...
would you be down to do another tutorial like this but with a spartan model? im trying to get ny own avatar ready for use in vrchat but it has somany attachments and its very confusing to me.
oh that will happen a lot. what I do is go to the avatar in components and set the rig back to generic and then click rig and set it back to humanoid(so pretty much turn off and on the power/rig). If that doesn't work I click on the top left of the screen [File] and search down and click on [build settings] and do nothing after that, and usually the control panel shows up after that. I recommend doing the second one first than the rig trick because I don't want to risk more glitches to ruin your project. Last choice is save project and exit then re-enter unity. I hoped this helps and I cant wait to see your amazing work in Vrchat.
i have a question, every time i get an avatar, auto rig it and do everthing in unity, when i go into vrchat and try to make a fist with it, it doesnt close properly. How do i fix this?
Good question, now that has happened to a lot of people due to how Mixamo works, so there is nothing wrong on your end. The only way to fix that is to set the bones properly in Blender. I will do a tutorial for you and for many other people since it this problem happen all of the time.
I want to make a custom rig, so what I'm wondering is if the bone names and number of joints etc are a big deal...I'm assuming the vrchat tools finds the bone names automatically is you stick so a certain naming conversion..but yours are called "mixamo something something" so maybe not.
I made it up to the part with the vrc avatar descriptor, I downloaded the sdk and it doesn’t show up under add component. I have no clue what to do cause I can’t find a fix for it.
For some reason when you said go to file and go to import and then Wavefront and I see the model thing and when I double click the avatars stuff is not in here the head and the body not in here what do I do?
I'm in Unity and i dragged over a model from vrc mods and the sdk from vrchat, but there is no "VRChat SDK" drop down at the top? sometimes there is but the only options it has is Utilities -> Clear cache and playerprefs. How do i fix this
so uh, "vrc avatar" doesnt work in unity, yet i copied everything u did step by step just with a different avatar and no bone issues and idk whats goin on tbh
make sure to import your VRC SDK3 into Unity and hopefully this will work. Also keep in mind that VRC avatar descriptor should allow you manually move the In-game eyes with the blue, green and red arrows. If it doesn't allow you to do that and makes you put in numbers/coordinates to set the position of the in-games eyes then what you should do is save the project, and exit and come back into the project. delete and bring back the vrc avatar descriptor and you should be able to get that proper and working vrc avatar descriptor for you to upload it to VRChat. Or make sure your model is set to humanoid. Good luck on your project.
It could Unity's problem. Make sure to save your project first, then back out and come back into the project. if that doesn't work, make sure that the avatar has vrc avatar descriptor, bones, and that you click on auto fix for the system messages in the control panel. Good luck.
oof sorry for the late reply, but good question. One solution to this is by manually importing the texture separately into unity. That always works for me good luck.
some models won't show up for some reason in blender, im doing everything right i even tried kegan and it worked but for other models no, is there a fix to this? the model im trying to import is Tea Gardner
oh you might have to convert them into obj. or fbx files. Another thing could be the if Blender says that the model is in the project, try zooming out because it could be too big or too far for your view to see.
Its good and it helped me a lot but i got a problem, on unity when i click select, the inspector tab its all blank and theres no options. Can you help me?
I have the perfect website for you. Now remember to watch out for add pop ups and always click the X to exit out of them, but other than that, the website is safe mainly because i have been using it for 3 years now. It has most of the AAA game titles you want from COD, Battlefield, Dead Space and more. here's the link: p3dm.ru/
What could've happened was that Unity didn't auto select the Avatar under Animator on the right side of the Unity screen. If you are using a prefab, what happened was that the prefab might've been broken or that something was missing when being imported into Unity. If none of these work then it could be that SDK2 might've been used which isn't supported anymore or that the project is using the wrong Unity version. One things to keep in minds is that Unity does crash and just ruin the project, so there will be times where you may have to exit out of Unity and come back in or delete the project and restart from scratch. But only do that as a last resort. Good luck on your avatar creations.
ok so you're at the part where you're done with the avatar such has textures, rigging, VRC avatar descriptor. So now you go to the top of the unity screen and click on VRChat SDK then click on show control panel then log in your VRChat account. once that's done, click on builder then just click auto fix and everything. Finally click build and publish for windows so you can upload your avatar to VRChat. If you want to upload it for quest or want to make a thumbnail your your avatar then check out my other tutorials.
hopefully you got everything right such as ,the models in set to humanoid, has a vrc avatar descriptor, the in-game eyes are positioned right, and the you have the sdk installed onto the unity project. Also make sure the vrchat was created through the vrchat website and not from steam or quest because those accounts don't have designated passwords.
oh that, what you could do is download unity through personnel use instead of business. That problem gets a lot of people. make sure to download unity through the right link. Link for unity Hub: unity3d.com/get-unity/download. And this link is for the Unity Version to download: unity3d.com/unity/whats-new/2019.4.31. don't forget to download unity android target support for quest uploads too. Good luck. Also sorry for the late reply.
If you're talking about what I need to get started in avatar creating then I would get Unity 2019.4.31 Mac support and Blender Mac support. Every Mac and PCs automatically come with 3d model viewer and file explorer so everyone has a chance to show their creations in VRChat.
Oh that happens a lot to me too. After setting that model from generic to humanoid. click on configure and make sure to map all of the bones to what they are. If the model still isn't on t-pose can be lucky and ignore the sign and upload to VRC but if it requires you to fix it then look somewhere in the bottom in configure and click on enforce t-pose. hoped this helps and good luck,
Absolutely. Any laptop that works on Linux or windows, has a core processor of intel i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 or above will do the job. Make sure to have a lot of storage space so save in work on projects. I use an external 4TB hard-drive to save my projects.
Hi, When downloading the SDK I happen to get an issue with some packages not being able to be added to the local file system (idk why), and because of that the scripts and some other things aren't there (the eye look script for example, there is an editor script for it, but not the script itself...). if by any chance you know why this is (maybe because a newer SDK version idk its been a year lol) or you know how i can fix it, please let me know. thanks!
I will make a proper or simple tutorial on how to do that later in the year, but feel free to check out my other tutorials where I can teach you how to toggle multiple props onto your avatar. Thanks for commenting.
Oh, so if you're doing Mixamo then the model probably already has a bone set onto the avatar. If that happens then try to change the model from fbx to object, another way is to check if there are bones set in unity or blander and see if the pre-existing bones work. The 2nd problem would be that Mixamo tends to have a hard time rigging models that aren't in human form. Foe example Mixamo best works on models that have the right size limbs, a perfect body, a neck between the body and head. The best way to rig models would be to turn them into a t-pose. Hoped this helps and good luck.
if there is no control panel, make sure that you have imported the VRC SDK into unity. Also sometimes the Tab doesn't show up so one way to make it show up is to look on the top left of your screen and click on file, then build settings, and then exit out of control setting by clicking the X and hopefully the SDK control panel should pop up. good luck.
sadly Unity is the only way to upload avatars onto VrChat. But there is a free program called Ready Player Me which is an online program that lets you customize and crate an avatar onto VRChat for you. Here's the link: readyplayer.me/vrchat

So when I go to the vrchatsdk there is no panel
if there is no control panel, make sure that you have imported the VRC SDK into unity. Also sometimes the Tab doesn't show up so one way to make it show up is to look on the top left of your screen and click on file, then build settings, and then exit out of control setting by clicking the X and hopefully the SDK control panel should pop up. good luck.
@@ajaxturmoil1589 thanks i fixed it and made my first avatar
@@berdlyvr9258 Congrats
can u make a guide without unity it dosent work
sadly Unity is the only way to upload avatars onto VrChat. But there is a free program called Ready Player Me which is an online program that lets you customize and crate an avatar onto VRChat for you. Here's the link: readyplayer.me/vrchat
