40 YEAR OLD MRE Review 1982 Beef Diced With Gravy TASTE TEST | Vintage Brown Bag Meal Ready to Eat

  • The oldest MRE I've ever reviewed! Crazy to think this Meal Ready to Eat was packed 40 years ago in 1982 and now I'm giving it a taste test in 2022. Eating old ration food is always a risk but I got lucky in this case; however, the cheese spread was an abomination that likes of which I never want to experience again. Regardless it's always fascinating to check out these old military rations and even better when they can be consumed.
    Thanks for watching!

    Got this exact ration coming Monday! Yum... Also I know what it's like eating rations older than you. My oldest was a 1944 Royal Canadian Navy tin. This is gonna be the oldest MRE.

    Awesome, detailed review. Thank you! I think this ration would have been great with a little pack of dehydrated mashed potatoes for the beef and gravy. It's amazing how well the whole thing held up. I bought a bunch of brown bags a few years back, because I wanted to find the chocolate covered cookie, the freeze dried fruit, and the salted crackers. I found them, and I'm still amazed at how well certain components can hold up through the years. My experience is that cheese spreads age in one of two ways, they either develop an awesomely funky, strong, aged-cheese goodness, or they become five-day-old summer-sun roadkill packed in a pouch. I'm sorry (but amused) that you got the latter.
    Interesting that there was no cold drink?
    Again, I have to commend you for the detail in your reviews. You've got the knack of it, stick with it and you could be a legend.....

    I used to work in Defence stores in the U.K. We had ration packs and we would get instructed to open certain batches to inspect wether they were any good. Always the sweets would deteriorate and then the whole batch would be scrapped. It was In the 80s and all the tinned stuff and drinks kit was always perfect. We used to take them home rather than bin them.

      @@ReadinessRations I ran the Clothing Sores on an RAF Base and part of that building had the war rations which they had to keep but also sometimes used on exercises. I was a civilian but also in the Army reserves. I used both the old type (tins) then later the boil in the bag rations were better.

    I ate them when they were brand new military issue. I was so missing the old Crats. There was no flameless heaters and they were out of the old stinky heat tabs. Very few items out of the MRE I preferred over the Crat. The newness of them wore off real quick.I
    Active duty Army 1981-1984! Lol
    We didn't run out of C rats till probably mid 1983. Then we switched to the MRE in Berlin Germany.

    • @ReadinessRations
      @ReadinessRations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your service! I've had a couple Vets tell me that they were still being issued Crats during the first Gulf War. I guess whatever was on had was issued.

    • @lisamcdonald7828
      @lisamcdonald7828 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd be shocked if they were being issued that late.
      Usually Berlin was one of if not the last to get new stuff. They weren't measuring for the Kevlar helmets till late 1984 there.
      Not sure if you are familiar with the Berlin Brigade but we were Occupying Berlin during the cold war. We were 110 miles into then Communist East Germany in a city with a wall built around it. We were surrounded by a lot of Soviet and East German military! You don't give your best equipment to soldiers in that position.

    • @ReadinessRations
      @ReadinessRations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lisamcdonald7828 yeah I was super surprised to hear that kind of thig myself but at this point I've heard the same from a couple different people. There are also stories of troops still being issued WW2 KRations in Korea and Korean Crats in Vietnam. I've even heard a couple tales of krats being issued in early Vietnam. How true any of that stuff is, who knows.
