  • Two elderly women are found in bed together.
STRANGERS is used with permission from Jamieson Pearce. Learn more at jamiesonpearce.com.
Two elderly residents at a nursing home are found in bed together, naked and in an embrace. The family of one of the women, Lillian, is called in by the home's authorities, who must figure out what to do.
But as the discussion ensues, long-simmering familial tensions arise, revealing fractures between the siblings trying to decide the fate of their mother. At heart is the question: is it love, or is it the muddled delusions of a mind caught in dementia?
Writer-director Jamieson Pearce's beautifully aching drama intertwines a love story with a family story about aging, parents and children, capturing the reversal of power that encroaching mortality creates in a familial unit and asking questions about the relationship between love, memory and self.
The atmosphere of the film, from the visuals to the writing to the performance, is gorgeously muted, rooted in the subtle but remarkable visuals. The lovely, melancholic cinematography and graceful camerawork create a sense of time and self suspended, particularly in the opening sequence: all that exists for Lillian is the touch and tenderness between her and her lover Mary. It's a fragile yet frank scene, and it hangs over the rest of the film, framing the drama with profound philosophical questions.
The look and feel seem almost elegiac as if the film itself is a moment becoming a memory even as it unfurls in the present tense. Each image is composed with care and precision, with a genuine delicacy of touch. As a result, the story is both poetic, with visual details often taking on an almost talismanic weight and significance.
But the writing and performances have their moments of spikiness and conflict, especially as the characters' perspectives and agendas unfold. The dialogue teases out great moments of irony and humor, particularly in how exasperating families can be, and in unraveling revelations of the past. Actors Angie Milliken and Jo Turner portray brother and sister with a palpable connection and the worn-in thorniness specific to siblings with a history of love, disagreements and grievances between them.
But overall, as the discussion unfolds, we slowly become aware not only of the history between this family, but the way Lillian herself is an object of conversation -- one increasingly treated almost like a child, or an object, with little discussion of her as a person with free will and complexity of history and psychology. A significant question for the family that emerges is whether or not the love between Lillian and Mary is real, or if this is a case of an addled mind acting inappropriately, or lost in the past.
The answer, of course, is both simpler and more complicated than it seems, perhaps because the assumptions underlying the question are themselves too simplistic, though the situation may demand a concrete answer. STRANGERS itself doesn't offer an easy solution or interpretation, preferring instead to remind us of the human being whose fate is being decided. Lillian has spent most of the film receding from consciousness as a complex human presence -- a character talked about instead of experienced.
But the final remarkable sequence of STRANGERS restores her primacy, both to the film's consciousness and the viewer's awareness. With a gentle, steady sense of portraiture -- and economical but remarkable performance by actor Melissa Jaffer -- the arresting final shots of Lillian are both haunting and soulful, striking up a remarkable chord of empathy and creating a mute but eloquent appeal -- if not to be understood, then to be fully seen in all of her humanity.

They portrayed the opening scene so sweetly. Their simple innocent affections should not be condemned as debauchery. At this time in their life as in anytime in their lives, love should not be shunned. They are adults.

I hope people don't make this into a gay rights issue.
Because honestly from my perspective, this well made-it short film, is about the loneliness our widowed seniors face.
Edit: love is not sexual, especially with how things just don't work the same when you're that age. Is simply being held, touched, and wanted

If you are younger or even middle aged please listen. I am now just passed what could reasonably be thought of as middle aged and the most shocking thing is that I think and feel no differently than I did in my 20's. This, I now know is unlikely to change. It breaks my heart now to know this because I, like most younger people rolled my eyes at my elders and/or invalidated the importance of their thoughts, opinions, and desires simply because of their age. I am already being treated differently. It scares me and makes me very sad. I am still attracted to the same age and types of people as before, still like hearing new music, still like concerts, all of the same things, maybe a bit more empathetic to the situations of others but I am watching live while I am slowly ceasing to be relevant to others because they assume my age makes my person less valid. It happens to us all. It doesnt have to. Please keep in mind that it will happen to you too. Its so cruel to assume that elderly people dont need physical contact and/or deny them simply because they cannot live alone. Such an important thing should never be stripped from someone. Keep this in mind the next time you interact with an older person. Thank you

The only thing they omitted is the fact that medications are routinely used to suppress sexual desires in anyone who shows them. It is for the purpose of protecting the facility from legal repercussions. It is so sad that as a society we don't acknowledge that seniors are still adults with normal needs and desires. My mum's mum we call her nan lived to a ripe age of 87. Her husband died of a heart attack at the age of 52, so young. She moved across the road from us and so we saw her a lot. She was kind and it was said she was shy. She went to church and went away every now and again baby sitting for extended periods. She enjoyed her freedom. Later on in life she gave money to her son to build a granny flat on their property and she was isolated out there on a partial farm so she grew the most beautiful roses. She apparently was going through a habit of leaving the stove on and they decided to put her in a care facility where she had her own room but would join others in the dining room for meals and other outings. She met a fellow resident there. He would smoke and so she would go outside and took up smoking herself! He gave her a ring and she was proud of this. She told me it was the best thing that ever happened to her by going to this place. His family apparently were upset and angry with this. He had Altzeimers Disease and believe it got to the point where he no longer remembered her. She said he reminded her of her former husband. Such judgement in life is cruel.

On all the comments about why they can’t let two “consenting” old women have some happiness before they die, the movie is depicting a predicament. You could face a situation like this where Mary’s children think she’s being abused sexually by your mum without consent (@5:55). How else do you expect an elder care home to deal with it? Lilian’s children’s reactions hardly seem cruel, but more like verifying the claims of the care center with their mum. They don’t at all seem judgmental of their mum being lesbian, just a little surprised and unraveling their thoughts. It’s a sad situation, but we don’t know Mary’s mental state or her ability to provide consent, so we can’t rush to judge her children either.

    • @AndSoWeLaughed
      @AndSoWeLaughed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think the daughter and sons (and other family) reaction was pretty realistic. It is an issue when she could be being abused. If you’re not in your right mind frame, is it consent... but the staff however handled it with NO grace at all. They were in fact punishing her. They even tried to justify it with the ignorance and homophobia presented by the staff of different backgrounds... ew.
It seemed like this was always her true self. Admitting to an affair with a woman and then using bebes name as answer b.

I wish I could find this kind of love as a 30 year old lesbian myself. The love of my life. Cheated on me and left me for a man and married him. She rubbed it in my face and made fun of me. I cried for nearly a year. As she told me she would make fun of me how she cheated and boasted how good she was at destroying me. She said she was trying to get me to kill myself. And to start self harming again ( I did not do it) she is the most evil vile person I've ever met.
Whenever id tell her I know she is cheating I can feel it. She would tell me "you are sick in the head. You need to be hospaltized. You're delusional. You are a mental person" I started to believe her and question my sanity.
