In Alberta the paramedics are extremely short staffed and getting an ambulance is difficult to get, Alberta government says if it's determined by yourself to not be a life threating emergency to use a cab on your own coin, instead of an ambulance. Pathetic. They took away public labs and the private labs are extremely delayed and do not have convenient hours. Alberta Health care by the UCP is an extreme disaster.

Pan-Canadian licensure and team-based care are an essential part to getting Canadians the access to healthcare we've been promised and do not receive. Also properly funding PUBLIC healthcare instead of premiers pushing to privitize.

Canada has one of the most expensive and costly healthcare systems in the world. It’s not a lack of funding, it’s scarcity of resources and a demand for services that can never be met due to said demand being more a less limitless, as such is the nature of healthcare.
The system is inherently broken and pumping more money into it is like pumping fuel into a car with a punctured gas tank, it’s pointless.

its a great idea, ive been doing the paramedic thing for 8+ years - now working in the NWT and we are going above and beyond to bridge gaps very successfully. Paramedic are very good in adapting their practice to fit into non traditional environments, we are exceptionally adaptable.

Why don’t you select little bit more medical students ? There are many students in Canada who are very capable but fail the interview. Please reconsider giving the opportunity for those who fail the medical interview.

Harper's conservatives did so much damage to healthcare, and Ford Conservatives in Ontario are underfunding healthcare by over a billion dollars, and has passed bill 60 allowing privatization which costs tax payers more money.

You must be irate that the Trudeau government was withholding paying their fair share of healthcare funding.😉
Greens are a party in shambles, and the NDP are in full support of a increasingly compromised and ineffective Trudeau government.
As to the provinces, they're all over extended financially, as is the federal government. The only way ahead is a complete overhaul of all our healthcare systems, with an increased avenue for private options. The best rated systems in the world are a mix of public and private; we are not one of the top systems.

It took me Five Years to finally find a Family Medicine GP. Prior to that I relied on Public Clinics. The problem with Public Clinics is the Lack of Continuity / Follow-up because the on-site GP doesnt know your Medical History or you as a person because they dont have the Time. Finding a "good" doctor also requires a "good match" in temperaments-----ie a physician who sees your fundamental Humanity, has some Empathy for your Health needs and doesnt Patronize you like a "backward child". Unfortunately, the Conservative Govt remains Uncommitted to Funding Public Health and Long Term Care.

@J.W. I partly agree and partly disagree.
The politicians have been given control of our health care system starting in the Medical Care Act in 1966. Politicians are naturally managing the system using politics (as this is what they are good at) - i.e. they foment a crisis and facilitate public discussion to gain public support before meaningful change can be identified and pushed through. In the mean-time the professionals that know what is best practices are minimized and ordered to not speak out in any way. I suggest that the system change be re-focused to be more innovation/process improvements based rather than politically driven - i.e. let the professions (doctors, nurses, system engineers, etc.) lead the debate on what is the way forward.
In our current state, the system has reached a crisis (not just with GP issue). It is so bad that the professional doctors that I've been seeing have plainly said that it is the Alberta Heath System that has failed me rather than the profession. The point that I am making is that now the professions are playing politics and placing patients and government officials (i.e. my MLA) at odds - that is evidence of a corrupt/dysfunctional internal work culture (e.g. playing politics and defensive sub-systems above the needs and concerns of patients).
The part that I disagree with is that the G.P.'s that I have had in the past are stressed to the maximum and, therefore, their standard of care has dropped significantly IMHO. Yes, the GP does follow-up, however, they only superficially deal with issues (especially chronic) and their ability to correctly diagnose is hampered because of the constraints on their resources. Also, some less scrupulous G.P.'s over-book their time in order to game the system and get more pay from the government (i.e. they only use a small fraction of their allotted 15 minutes per session and then move onto the next patient). Canadians need to wake up and push back on the MLA's to force meaningful change - the Canadians that I know are mostly complacent and settle on emotional venting rather than writing letters and becoming leaders of change.

More people would be inclined to become family doctors if the pay scale was better and the government offered better supports. This would help the health system immensely by keeping non emergencies out of the emergency room at the hospitals.

Maybe slow down our ever increasing immigration numbers until our public systems and services are stabilized? 🙃

  • @2k23equality
    @2k23equality ปีที่แล้ว +2

Imagine providing only 25 spots for international trained doctors in a year in a province
After one has passed the 1st interview, the medical college in the province has approved one yr post grad training and approve for 1 yr Canadian training and lastly interviewed by sponsors and you get a letter after 2 days that you are not sponsored despite you have been approved for training.
Doctors come to Canada with much experience and pass all exams, but the doctors fate 😮 been decided by sponsors and the same doctor that is approved for training has to wait for another year.
I think the whole process of immigration for doctors needs to be urgently reviewed and training spots needs to be increased, and it needs to be increased.
Until a new way of speeding up the process of licensing for foreign trained doctors are implemented. With immigration, it's better to accommodate those foreign trained to be absorbed after creating more short trainings spaces for them, the situation will only worsen.
Does it make any sense after moving to Canada, passing all exams, gained experience and be rejected again and people have to move again to another country because of these unnecessary barriers and low training spots!

So let me understand this. You’ve made a model that doesn’t actually fix any shortages of any kind but expects providers to see patients at a disturbing pace. This doesn’t fix burnout or help with patient safety. Physicians weren’t doing any of the labs etc before because ancillary and nursing staff did these things. This is disturbing to me.

  • @Sophielearning2023

Another non-real solution that people who offer it to poor Canadians do not trust it for their children and family members.
The only real solution to address the shortage of doctors in Canada is to grant licenses to qualified international doctors who have passed all necessary exams but cannot secure a spot in Canadian residency. It is important to dispel the myth that only Canadian medical schools provide top-quality education, as many international doctors are just as competent. Discrimination and humiliation towards international doctors who choose Canada as their home should be stopped, and we should utilize available resources to their fullest potential.

This is complete BS. Doctors get paid a damn sight more and they have job security which is more than what you can ask for in other occupations. Plus they have great retirement benefits. The medical association would like you to believe there is a crisis because they want to extract more money from the taxpayer. That's how politics works because i've been there. However one thing is putting a huge drain on the health system and that is the massive influx into Canada of immigrants from the third world, namely India, who often bring tons of medical problems with them such as untreated multidrug resistant TB,chikungunya, dengue, salmonella, typhoid, malaria, leshmaniasis, end stage kidney failure requiring dialysis, liver failure from hepatitis needing transplantation. The list goes on and on....

That is such a small amount it doesn't make a difference on the scale they're talking about. People don't want to be doctors and nurses. Getting in the field and having an idea of what the job is REALLY like causes a lot of dropouts.
