I love hearing about these stories from the DTES because we really need to figure this problem out. Not only for the people's well-being who live down there but also for our beautiful city. Vancouver can do so much better.
I agree! I was living in Vancouver for the past 2 and a half years and dedicated all of my time there to trying to help the DTES community. I volunteered with many different NGOs, in different capacities, and I what I liked doing most was teaching yoga/meditation. It was a bit of a novel idea, but what I meant by "yoga" wasn't necessarily complex postures. It was more about reconnecting with your body, emotions and inner world. I believe addictions are often fuelled by emotional pain/trauma. So practices that allow you to go inward and heal past hurts can help a lot in outgrowing certain behaviours that no longer serve you in order to live more fulfilling lives. Anyways, one of the things I always thought and expressed was that helping the DTES was also in the interest of the rest of the city. For all the pain that there is in the DTES, I believe that this neighbourhood also presents a mirror for the rest of society to look into. I think they show us what we, as a society, are placing value in (money, profit, consumerism) at the expense of other values (community, mental health and wellbeing, empathy, altruism, etc.). So helping the DTES is good for Vancouver not only in practical terms, in that it may reduce deaths and inequality, but it can also offer an opportunity for society to become a healthier and happier place for everyone to live in. Anyways, I really felt like sharing my thoughts. Thanks for your comment. I do agree with you that we need to come together to figure out solutions and that doing so will benefit ALL the neighbourhoods in the city, not only the DTES.
CBC Vancouver does an excellent job in showing the reality of the situation. Big respect for not buying into the anti-addict moral panic & working towards solutions.
Yep she is always super measured and empathetic in her interviews! Really important that we get this kind of reporting in our local news and CBC Vancouver do a great job.
So you're saying that placing someone into an SRO on Granville St in the entertainment district or Hastings St that's full of other users with little to no support isn't working? 😮

At the end of the day, you need something to look forward to, otherwise what's the motivation? If someone is telling you to clean up your act so you can work yourself to death and still struggle to pay your bills, feel lonely and miserable like everyone else... you're not thrilled that's your prize.
Unregulated drug toxicity is the leading cause of death in British Columbia for persons aged 10 to 59, accounting for more deaths than homicides, suicides, accidents and natural diseases combined. Drug overdose is now the cause of almost 50% of deaths of people in BC between 20-40 years old.
On Van. island the age is probably a lot higher. It's the on/off types that die; your body can't take the hit. When I did a work year in Victoria the age bracket seemed to shoot way above forty years, lifelong addicts living in grandma's old clear title house. But the province WANTS all the issues to be concentrated for services, crime, and other venues. Ran the Metropole on Abbot after work: what killed the bldg. were all the subsidized housing with security wanting to do all their partying in OUR building (Vets, seniors, lost young men, working men like myself; a good mix of people keeping their eye on each other) and then go home to paid upkeep. And that was before 2010 and it was about to get a lot worse. Contamination reaches a tipping point, especially if you start feeling entitled to your lifestyle and blame anyone, anything, except your selfish self.
Yes my mom in March in dtes age 50. Enough is enough. I can see fentenyl helping someone like her. But for someone like me definitely methadone and trying to restore my life was a better option.
@@theresekirkpatrick3337 it's true. I heard 14000 ppl died from fentenyl in Canada In June and 36000 ppl died from fentenyl in America in June. Just so heartbreaking 💔

Argh this reporters voice is annoying...but the issue is important... I had a co worker relapsed, co worker was on methadone and was weened off...then over 8 years or less co worker relapsed and passed away. Heart breaking when i heard...i can't stand these hard drugs...yup--) housing, therapy...counseling is needed--) people need to be heard through counseling or art therapy...government doesn't see the need for that... Lien is now my favorite reporter. I wish people could watch more and spread the message in this video.
ive gone through fentanyl withdrawal
its awful
but you get through it.
im tired of excuses tbh.
True. We need government intervention. Especially involuntary rehab. After drug court and changes at hosipital everything get more out of hand.
A gulag would take care of it.
Pacific oak saved my life . Jen & Kayla & the doctor/counselors were the biggest support I ever have. 9 yrs struggled with 2 yrs clean.❤
I work everyday now been on safe program a year now, best thing for people trying to actually get clean
it's good that they don't criminalize addiction but help people safely
I wouldn't recognize Vancouver without the drug culture.

i'd like to hear more stories from this group of people
