  • The Striped Dylan Claire Beanie is an easy crochet beanie pattern worked in simple double crochet stitches, and available in 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult Large. I'm showing how to work the Teen/Adult Small size.
I made this striped beanie as part of the 2021 Crochet Cancer Challenge hosted by Sweet Potato 3. The gold/yellow is for Childhood Cancer Awareness, and the white is for Retinoblastoma Awareness.
You'll need Worsted Weight Yarn - I'm using Swish in Honey and White, an H8/5mm Crochet Hook, and Tapestry Needle, plus a soft tape measure as gauge is important.
Order Swish right here (aff link): shrsl.com/35i7v

Hi Alexandra. I am one of your followers and fans. I want to take this time to thank you for creating a “Crochet Community.”
I have been crocheting since my great aunt taught me in the first grade. It has always been a passion of mine and I have taught many people over the years including left-handed people (my sister is a “lefty”).
I have used your tips and patterns to make crocheted items especially for donations to children’s hospitals, church members, veterans and shelters. They are SO appreciative of crocheted items. Therefore, you have also contributed through me.❤️
    You are greatly appreciated, Alexandra.
Thank you for doing a fine job and for your dedication to the art of crocheting. 😊

Wonderful. I need to thank you. I’ve been crocheting since the first grade. In all my years, this is the best way to change colors AND I love your “straight seam” technique. I am crocheting for chemo patients. I am alternating the stripes between a solid color row and an ombré color. You’re a fine instructor with valuable tips. Much appreciated. Hugsss.

This warms my heart to hear - thank YOU! So glad you found my tips helpful. I'm imagining your hats in those colors together, and I know it's beautiful and cheerful. Where do you donate to? I'm always looking for new places for myself and to recommend.

My 3-yr old niece died many years ago of cancer. Rainbows Babies and Children’s Hospital of University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio was beyond wonderful to her and the entire family. Her first surgery was just before her first birthday-a brain stem tumor. She ended up having surgery each year until death. The doctors and nurses were so very kind. They accept hats in the Fall due to their limited storage space. I will make sure to let them know that I got this pattern from YOU! Hugsss
The nurses in ICU purchased Disney’s Lion King video for her to watch out if their own pocket. That was her favorite movie.❤️

Thanks so much, Verna! I am not typically a striped person. I think they're fun, just not my first choice. I like color blocks more but I think this was a great way to incorporate both colors.

Looking at the written pattern, it says for round 8: “Work 1 DC into the second DC.” For round 9, it says: “Work 1 DC into the first DC.” But in the video instructions here, it’s the opposite. Work 1 DC into the first DC for row 8 and work 1 DC into the second DC for row 9. The problem with switching it like this is that we end up with 71 stitches at the end of round 8, even if we don’t do a DC just to the right of that first chain stitch. In round 8, we need to work the second DC (after we chain 2 to start, which counts as the first DC) into the *second* DC in the round below as the written instructions say, instead of the first DC as the video says, because the chain stitch in round 7 below is an extra stitch. There’s technically 71 stitches total in round 7. We just didn’t count that chain 2 as a stitch before. So, if we don’t skip that first DC in round 8, we’re essentially working into that extra stitch (the chain 2) that wasn’t supposed to be counted. Then, we’d have to skip the last DC (not the joining chain from round 7 that’s directly to the right of the beginning chain two…that would also be left unworked in addition to the DC to the right of it) in order to get a count of 70. Skipping that last DC at the end leaves a huge gap. That gap is much different than the one that happens when we skip the first DC in the beginning of round 9 in the video (or round 8 in the written instructions) because that closes up once we join to the first DC at the end of the round. But skipping the last DC in the end of round 8 leaves a gap that doesn’t get resolved when joining to the first DC. The gap stays there and is very obvious. I believe that’s why the written instructions are opposite of the video instructions here for round 8 and 9. Following the written instructions, everything works out perfectly. By working into the *second* DC instead of the first for round 8, we eliminate that extra chain 2 stitch from round 7 below and we end up with 70 at the end. That means we’ve worked except for that first one that we skipped. Obviously, the joining chain from round 7 that’s just to the right of the chain 2 is left unworked. Once we’ve eliminated that extra chain 2 stitch by working into the second DC on round 8, then we’re good to go and can switch back and forth without a problem for all the remaining rounds, working our last DC into the last DC from the previous round for even rounds, and working our last DC into the joining chain from the previous round that’s located just to the right of the beginning chain 2 stitch from the current round. I hope I explained that right! It took me awhile to figure out why I wasn’t getting the right stitch count while following this video. Then I saw that the written instructions were the opposite for the start of round 8 and 9 and then it started making sense. Just wanted to point this out so that no one else gets confused or wastes time trying to figure it out. Thank you for the video instructions, though! I’ve been crocheting for almost 30 years and this is the first time I’ve ever seen this method for keeping the seam straight. The slanted seam drives me crazy, too! So, this video really helped me see what the instructions were explaining because I wasn’t quite understanding what to do just from the written part. I have a chronic illness and brain fog and trouble thinking are part of the symptoms as well as the medication side effects, so I sometimes have trouble understanding something until I see it. I’m also a visual learner. So, thank you for taking the time to make this video and to show us this trick for getting a prettier seam! I’m excited to use it with other patterns now, too! And thank you for offering the PDF for free for the #CrochetForCancer challenge! Your hat has been my favorite so far and I may make more than the one I’m working on now depending on how much time I have. Thanks again! 😃

Glad you like the pattern. I copied and pasted the pattern for the beanie from another similar one I made, and then adjusted the stitch counts and rows as needed as I changed the hook and yarn up so I will need to go through the video to see what you mention as well as look at my finished beanie to compare.

I sat down and watched the video for Rounds 8 and 9, and Round 8 is correct as in it matches the written pattern. Round 8 is a cream stripe, and it's worked into the 2nd stitch, not the first. My wording is "crochet into the next stitch not the first stitch".
None of the body is joined to a beginning chain, even after we're done increasing so there is not an issue with adding an extra stitch in by working into the chain stitch because we aren't doing (unless working an extra round of single crochet at the end for length, and in that case, the joining to the chain is only for one round).
The only difference is in the video, Round 9 is worked into the 2nd stitch instead of the 1st as it's written in the pattern, but that has no affect, and you are not leaving any stitches unworked for a gap to be present, and still end up with 70 stitches.

@@eyeloveknotscre8tioncrochet It’s hard for me to check on the error I was getting in row 8 since I finished the hat. But, in row 8, I kept getting too many stitches (or a gap if I left the last stitch undone to get 70 stitches) if I didn’t work into the second stitch as row 9 says to do in the video instructions. Then, for row 9, it came to 70 if I worked into the first stitch. Working into the 2nd meant I’d have to work into the stitch just to the right of the chain as you explained in the video for the earlier rows or I’d come up short by one stitch. I’m sure you’re correct if you double checked it. I’ll make a second hat for the charity drive so that I can figure out what I did wrong. Thanks for taking the time to look into it! 😃

I love the video, but ya I do not like the lines for the inside of the hat. As hats I make for gifts. If they put the hat inside out or wash it… I would fear it unravel or see it! I love clean cut, but thank you! Love these colors and designs…

I know what you mean! There is a way to hide it a bit more in one of the next rounds double crochets by yarning over with the previous strand before completing the first half of the double crochet (so the strand is secured in there), and then repeating that with the second half as well. May need to experiment with it to get that technique to match up with the seam technique, but definitely hides it better inside the hat. Thanks so much for checking out my video 😊

    Hi there
I have made a dozen toddler beanies.
I want to make some newborn and infant ones with Bernat Softee baby yarn 100% acrylic.
A 4mm size G hook is recommended. Typically I use the recommended hook size.
Since your pattern is for H hook, how do I adjust your pattern for G hook size OR what do you recommend. Thanks.

That's awesome! I don't have a lightweight pattern for a beanie like this one, but I do have one you can use to start: th-cam.com/video/TEHjEzQDYsU/w-d-xo.html
It's worked in lightweight yarn, and starts in double crochet. Instead of switching to the granny stitch pattern, just continue working in double crochet rounds until it's the correct height.
