  • I listen to a lot of audiobooks (too many some may say!) but I've also listened to them through a number of different apps. These are my thoughts rating the best audiobooks and providing reviews on each.

    The trick with Audible is to set up a wish list and shop the sales, especially the two titles for once credit. I prefer to download the books and then play them back on my own server.

    • @ShelfCentered
      @ShelfCentered  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I've thought too much about this (and I'm cynical) but I worry putting books on my wish list only helps them know what I want and wouldn't impulse purchase so then they don't give them as a tailored sale for me. I am proven wrong by the fact that my wishlist items do show up for sales ... but not all of them!! :D

    One thing that you didn’t discuss is pricing. Audible is expensive! I listen to 10 to 15 books or more per month. And with audible, you only get 1 free book per month. I’ve been using Scrib for a few years. It’s $11.99 month and I can listen to a lot of books per month. They do make some books unavailable for a time after I listen to several books, but it’s not a problem since I have a lot of books in my queue. I also use Libby because I am cheap. What I’ve found is that some libraries do not have the same books. I’ve recommended books to my father in law and they don’t have them at his library.

    • @ShelfCentered
      @ShelfCentered  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've been meaning, almost from first posting this video, that I really need an update. I haven't checked out Scrib for one and, like you said, my focus was on the apps themselves as opposed to the money ... which is kind of important. Having said that, with audible, you can make it work. I think I've only paid full price one month when I wasn't paying attention. Otherwise, I pay about $9.99 to 11.99 per month by doing yearly memberships or catching deals that they have. I think there's one going on for like $5.99 or something like that right now. You just have to be active! And yes, I Libby is the library app now though it used to be Overdrive and they switched over so I need to update that too. Thank you so much!

    I like audible but the 1 credit a month is not enough at all. I need something with unlimited book listening for “X” amount a month..

    • @ShelfCentered
      @ShelfCentered  ปีที่แล้ว

      To some degree Audible provides that with their Audible Plus Catalogue, which is access to a huge amount of books for "free" with membership, but of course that huge amount of books is still limited and won't have a remote amount of the books you want. You've got to be careful though because some of those books expire and I've had them expire in the middle of reading.

    my biggest frustration with audible is it doesnt show % complete. That for me is a big plus when the app shows how much you have finished in a percentage.

    • @ShelfCentered
      @ShelfCentered  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do love a good percent complete, like on the Kindle. Only a couple of the other apps do that but then they don't have a lot of the things I prefer in Audible. But I agree, when I have a book I'm constantly flipping ahead to see how much left in the chapter and there's nothing like that feeling of being so far into the book and holding a chunk so at least a percentage can give you some level of that

    Boo 👎🏻 I didn’t want to pay for books I wanted unlimited books with a subscription guess I have to pirate it

    • @ShelfCentered
      @ShelfCentered  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You do get a healthy amount of books, but you're paying for your credit of one book a month (unless you pay more of course). I'd highly advise against pirating as it only hurts the industry we love.

    most public libraries in the US have FREE downloadable audiobooks... that is one great option I found with my local library, and did I mention its FREE (not really as most public libraries are funded with your tax $s so might as well use it)

    I started with Audible in 2008 it was very simple to load books and rarely changed anything 625 books later since Amazon took over a few years ago the last year or so they would update every month or so and changed everything that worked into a completely different program mode, Microsoft got in on the game and messed everything up to the point that out of 25 books for the year I still have 20 prepaid books left and I renew in just two or three months. Finally Amazon dumped Microsoft and had to let go of iTunes at the same time, now I cannot use my 15 years old Apple Classic 80GB iPod that only needed two battery changes during that many years I have used it probably 3-4 hours a day. I wish that Amazon had never changes the Audible program as it was very simple and worked every time, apparently the Audible executive branch took on two ideas that work; KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID and IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT???

    I have high anxiety and not looking for self help but fantasy/romance to help keep my mind busy. Looking for totally audiobooks and I have ADHD and hate when book are mixed with books for sale and can't keep them apart on the one app I like.

      I'm sorry if I'm answering this wrong, but I appreciate your comment! I have not listened to any mathematics audiobooks so I cannot help you out much there. I have listened to nonfiction books and they tend to be just as well done as the fiction.

    Is there any app where i can listen to the audio but at the same time i can read the same on the screen. So audio and reading going together.

    • @ShelfCentered
      @ShelfCentered  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I will have to search but that sounds brilliant. I think Kindle might do it, but I’ve actually never tried. I know they are tied together somehow and at least you pay less for the audio when you get the ebook. Plus I always see the audiobooks pop up when I’m in the kindle app. That’s why I wonder if you can’t do that through kindle

    I actually haven't heard of most of these, I'm out of the loop 😅 I'm a big audible user but it definitely has its problems. What I hate most is that there isn't a built-in cast option. I have to mirror my audio which causes tons of problems!

    • @TLBainter
      @TLBainter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, if you have an Android, you can disable any app's ability to display on your lock screen; I had to do that with audible too because for some reason the bar wouldn't go away even after the app was closed. Dunno if you can do the same on Apple, though.

    • @ShelfCentered
      @ShelfCentered  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it would be much more convenient to cast, but I don't typically cast my audiobooks so that wasn't something that stood out to me. That will be good to know for next time! I have an iPhone but I will have to look into taking it off the lock screen, I can't stand it because it messes up my place in the book so often

    • @TLBainter
      @TLBainter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually listen on a speaker or something while I'm painting, and whenever I cast it starts to get all garbled after an hour 😅 so annoying!
      And I'm definitely with you there, it's really dumb that you can skip through the audiobook on the lock screen!
