    I relate to so much of what you say. I have had so many bad experiences with doctors just discharging me cause I’m not of interest or implying I’m lying about my symptoms. I’m just waiting on the day someone actually tells me what’s wrong with my body. I’m just very worried about the future and what my health will do. I study neuroscience and would kill to be able to read through Jessica's medical files out of sheer academic love of a good puzzle but like.....one should never forget to treat the human, not just the disease. Unfortunately for doctors who have very niche specialisations and a great deal of arrogance, patients start looking like a box to tick rather than a whole ass person, and people with complex diagnoses like Jessica get shunted endlessly through the system.

    • @dinglebarry528
      @dinglebarry528 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In the US I have had literally dozens of neurologists. I can only say positive things about three of them.
      Overall, I have seen hundreds of doctors (we used to move around a lot with hubby’s job) and what I have found is that internal medicine and family practice doctors are SO much better, for me. In fact, one janitor was even better than a couple of neurologists that I had the displeasure of being treated by 😉. It sounds as though the NHS is set up a bit differently, and you must only be treated by the specialist that best correlates with ones diagnosed issue.
      Whatever the case may be, follow doctors orders and that goes for your wife too.

      I managed to have my neurologist office... forget? I have a Rare Disease. Year and a half ago my Autistic self went in and I got a ton of migraine questions and my migraines are under control (see “why am I vegan?”) so then being ushered out was frustrating. They then transferred me to a Nurse Practitioner. I went in and, having scripted how to redirect to the reason I cannot walk unaided, have trouble urinating and a ton of stuff below the waist (and weird reflexes everywhere) and started “my migraines are not a problem” and she thought “cool, appointment over” and I tell her my motor neuron disease is causing a lot of issues and she is flat footed. I knew from experience and the knowledge of the Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Facebook group that a physical therapist would need to evaluate what to do but being sent there because the professional asked where I was diagnosed with this new thing and I said “by your partner, months after your other partner diagnosed my mother” was... not in my predicted scripts. For a while my state had made all poor people go to one hospital for treatment (an hour and a half from my home) and I could count on extra doctors coming in to consult when the condition has no more treatment than was offered to my grandfather in the 1980s. Luckily the physical therapist helped me strengthen what I still control, stretch some of what I can’t, and I now have ankle braces and a method for taping my weak side so I can still wear nice shoes. That is not the way you want to find a neuro not admiring your disease 🤦🏻‍♀️

Also don't look weak or like your physical pain has any impact on your emotions because then you'll be discharged with a slip for the psych ward. It's so straining! I once cried because the bus was late, then a person held up the nurse for 15 minutes to book an appointment and once it's my turn I'm told "15 min late, you can't get in", and I had waited 6 weeks for the appointment - cause I needed a referral for the crippling pain I was constantly in!
      And my doc is kind enough to let me in regardless, but *then*, rather than handle my ignored medical issue which is the reason I'm in tears, she *asks if I want to see their therapist*. AAHH. \óAó/
      And it gets another type of infuriating with psychiatrists, where it's like "so you're wearing makeup, so you're fine" "so you're wearing dark makeup so you're bad" "so you stopped wearing makeup and so your self-esteem is better and you are better in general" and I'm just like... Can you please just ASK ME?!

I feel at this moment my whole undercarriage is on fire and I've been kicked up the bum repeatedly. Can I do anything about it? No. I'll just be told to take pain killers and deal with it. I have recently revised the 1-10 pain scale to something I could relate to, rather than numbers or smiling/frowning faces.
    1 and 2, no big deal.
    3-5 are increasing versions of "I can live through this but not well."
    6 = "I'm not getting much of anything done."
    7 = "I cannot concentrate enough to read."
    8 = quietly repeating, "Make it stop" over and over.
    9 = shouting repeatedly "MAKE IT STOP" over and over.
    10 = "Time to jump off a building."
    This scale is way easier for me to communicate to doctors. I encourage everyone to make their own personalized pain scale to convey your experiences to your physicians. The more they understand us, the more they can help.

      This makes so much more sense than the pain scale that exists. I once told a doctor I was at a 10 on a 1-10 scale and got told to “shut up lady, if you were at a 10 you’d be dead.” If I’d had any fight in me left at that point I’d ask why the scale didn’t stop at 9 then. This was while I was having a dislocated shoulder, dislocated hip and facial trauma being evaluated... fast forward to me finding a patient and understanding neurologist and things are much better. Next time I’ll tell a doctor “I don’t want to read, or do things I enjoy....food and water don’t matter...the pain is all that matters.”

      I've had good luck with doctors of internal medicine--not just MDs but DOs (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine). It seems like there's something about their training that makes them interested in the most complicated things and more interested in treating the whole person, serving as the central hub for all specialists, and wanting to comfort where comfort is needed. I highly suggest trying out some DOs to see if you get a "Grey's Anatomy moment" with one.

All their exams were negative (thank God of course), so therefore I had nothing and shouldn't be expecting anything from them. I've been in pain and been having all kinds of paresthesias in both arms, shoulders, neck from the day after this happened, it's been 2 months and I've been left to myself and the GP. Well, according to an orthopedic, my rheumathologist and my GP I probably had a subluxation that compressed the brachial plexus, not NOTHING. Next, please... LOL

    I also like to say that I am “ahead of my time” when doctors say things like “most people with that are over 80” [stroke at 51] or “you couldn’t possibly have that” [rare tumor]. We live outside the box. We pave the way. We prepare our friends for what their future will look like. CHANGING TOPICS. I bought and installed SurfShark. Then, since I so enjoyed this video, I clicked on the link in the description to buy you a drink. I got blocked for security reasons. Had to laugh. Sorry, no drink for you today.

    Finding a doctor like this is so rare and so mind-blowing! I feel the doctor struggle on a visceral level. I've left more than one specialist office weeping in the elevator. I've had the weirdest day today, I had a lot of pain (for me) yesterday and today, and also stress which reduces my spoons I think (anyone else have that?). So, I was really happy to hear you have a better doctor now! A doctor who looks at all of your conditions is so helpful. I've had two like that who are amazing at it and it's been so great. Well, one seemed a bit overwhelmed and not sure where to start with me but we're getting there! Also, very glad you're not at the hospital any more, that was awful to hear you were there and in pain. :)

    "I think I'm in love with a doctor. That's new." I laughed so hard at this, because I can absolutely relate. I recently had a few appointments with a really excellent doctor (he's substituting for my primary care doctor, who is temporarily working in the hospital because they needed more doctors for dealing with COVID).
    The new doctor is surprisingly good at dealing with my many chronic illnesses. After the third appointment with him, my fiancé joked that I'm in love with the doctor, and yeah, kinda. To have a doctor who treats you as a whole person, and not just a body system or set of symptoms is too often rare and difficult to find, and when you do find one, it's definitely a butterflies in your stomach, wait did that really just happen, sort of feeling.
    Jessica, I'm so glad you found an amazing doctor, and I hope he's able to continue to help you!

    This is painfully relatable. Literally, I had a pop in my back and it hurts so bad and I keep losing sensation in my arms and legs and have been having trouble emptying my bladder and I'm scared to go to the hospital for the tests my dr ordered because I'm in Florida and have an autoimmune disorder. I did start a round of steroids so maybe I'll feel enough better that the only hump I'll have to get over is the fear of catching a potentially lethal virus so that's fun. Your cake and dress are beautiful!

    I'm in love with your neurologist, too. And weirdly enough, my left lower back went out for reasons unknown on Saturday/Sunday, but it does that, so despite not being able to see (talk to) my doctor until late July, I was able to convince the pharmacist to dispense some useful painkillers today, so I can stop crying for a while. Plus, I'm a bit loopy.

    4 things I look for in a doctor!!
    1. “I don’t know.” So many doctors don’t admit when they’re unsure, and it always leads me to ineffective and expensive treatments/tests that aren’t necessary. Just tell me you don’t know so we can figure it out or I can go somewhere else.
    2. “I was looking into...” You’re taking your time to look at my medical history and learning new things?!?! He’ll yeah!!!!
    3. “X is associated/related to Y.” Especially if this is cross-system or less common info. It means you’re thinking past your immediate job and trying to put the puzzle together.
    4. Terms unrelated to their practice. For example, a therapist saw that I was visually impaired and asked “are you legally blind? What’s your acuity like?” And I started sobbing for real cause it was the first time my sight was a curiosity and not used to write off my anxiety!!

  • @DragonPrincessAoife
    @DragonPrincessAoife 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It’s so interesting. I’d find if docs would say I’m “fascinating,” I’d be severely offended. It’s happened to me before in my worst medical point. “I’m glad you’re fascinated by my painful experience but I’m fucking struggling here. By all means ignore that and keep making me feel like a specimen.” But at the same time anything that gets a doc to fully commit to you is fantastic. I don’t know how I’d respond to this but I’m glad you’re at this point in your experience.

    • @ambergardener9114
      @ambergardener9114 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, with the rare combination of all the uncommon diagnoses, she probably already feels like a specimen, and would rather somebody took her seriously than just say that what she has is impossible to have or whatever.

    • @DragonPrincessAoife
      @DragonPrincessAoife 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amber Gardener I get that. I had a skilled experience for a long time and always felt much more comfortable when docs left the science out of talking about their patient. Talking about symptoms and diagnosis, absolutely necessary, but when they’re talking about us as a whole, there’s an art to keeping the human in it.

    I am so happy for you Jessica! I couldn’t believe you hadn’t found a doctor like this before now, as I was a biology major for several years and find your condition infinitely interesting! But more than that, I find you as a person interesting, and I hope you remain cheerful as much as you can throughout all this! It’s so rare to get a doctor that’s interested in your issues but also kind, I’m having that problem with my myriad of mental disorders right now. They either want to write a paper on you and make lots of money, or they’re apologetic but have no clue what’s going on and no intention of finding out. This guy sounds like the kind of doctor I’d let write a paper on me lol ;)

There's not enough Drs out there that care enough about their patients wellbeing and it's almost like they don't realise it's a person in front of them not a textbook. I'm currently a biochemistry student and I really want to help understand rarer conditions like yours so everyone can have better lives.

When I was diagnosed with ehlers danlos I had a similar thing, I went in because I thought I had arthritis in my hands, but after looking over my medical files (and also the way I was sitting lol I just can not sit normally), the rheumatologist immediately put together that I had eds. It was amazing, every health problem I’d ever had was explained in that one visit

    So happy for you for getting a good doctor finally! I tried for years to find out why I get my migraines and still don’t know and I think I gave up a few years ago on it. I also am always boiling when I really shouldn’t be and I still don’t know why but one time during a doctors appointment about that they heard a heart murmur and then looked into it and found out I have a heart condition. I also have a blood disorder so yeah. Another one of those people with a lot wrong with them and a lot of things they have no clue why. I’m also on the verge of anemia. Fun.
    Wish doctors wouldn’t always dismiss things like extra testing because I thought the heat thing could be a thyroid problem but they said people my age don’t have them...
    I went off topic, but I am so happy for you finding a good doctor who listens and is looking at everything together!!!

    As a nursing student I cried hearing what that amazing doctor said to you. He really embodies our program’s motto of taking care of the whole person and empathizing with all of their needs. More doctors should really learn to put that mindset into practice.
