    The best video I’ve ever stumbled upon.. saw this video a couple of years back about two years ago I think, I’m now doing Alfredo in London and I find myself coming back to it just to freshen my knowledge. I’m forever grateful to you for uploading it. 👏🏽

    Wow ! I discovered this video yesterday.
    It literally feels like I’m inhaling while I’m singing now and I’m hitting notes I used to strain so hard for. Incredible
    It feels like a river of air is being inhaled and exhaled and meeting in the middle causing my relaxed lowered vocal chords to make great sound with no strain. This is awesome

    I discovered this with my teacher he said YOU GOT IT MAN! If I sang like that in front of people though it's to much. It's really beautiful when I do it. I am working on songs with this technique and I am just blown away with the power of my voice. I am a high tenor and I love singing in the female range. I can even do it powerfully now. I am sticking with this perinatally and not looking at any other technique cause it did wonders for me. It's something else, and it's powerful. It puts you in a whole nether ball park when you discover this. If your new to singing get a teacher. It might take a couple years but you will get it! Just believe in yourself. It's a journey.

    Chris, I cannot tell you thank you enough for putting out this series of videos. This one (Lesson 6) especially feels like it could be a game-changer! I just discovered it, so I haven't had but a few days to try and incorporate what I believe Edward Johnson is teaching, but already my voice feels different. More power with less effort. I am excited to see where this leads me, but I realize it's going to take a LOT of dedication and practice and thinking about producing my voice in a different manner than I ever have before. (Certainly, it's making me more aware of my breath support as well, which I realize now has been woefully lacking!)

    Thank you! I was trying to explain what “singing on the inhale” (aka ‘inalare la voce’) meant. People were getting SO MAD at me. They literally thought I meant singing while inhaling and were telling me I was crazy. It’s a tricky technique to explain, but it completely changed my singing voice. This is a fantastic explanation.

      @@jamesfatari2455 its a bit confusing. You just must think that youre not singing outside out of your mouth like as if theres a physicall barrier in front of you. But you sort of slowly exhale the breath inwards. Take a soprano in a choque with besathy sound, the position is right the sound is clear, you keep all that but dont let the air escape. You should trap it inside you, the amount you can and is natural for you. Its like a wood instrument, say clarinet. It has a joke at the bottom but the sound doesnt come out of it. to succed its important to do very little with the body

    For those concerned about the impossibility of this, Chris (uploader) has written the following on his website (in description):
    ...Air will not *actually* enter the body from the outside, but visualizing this taking place is helpful in achieving the end result. Edward [the man speaking in this video] said, "It is important to concentrate on the inhalation of sound, not breath."
    Now, in the video, Edward talks of this inhalation as if it is actually happening. It’s a helpful way to visualize what is happening. But even he, himself, said that visualization is used to achieve certain ends in singing. Lamperti was even more direct: "Always remember that what goes on above the throat are illusions, no matter how real they may feel or sound."

    Oh I love how everyone is hating on each other here 😂
    I tried out some different techniques and by experimenting I find out that each one of those has a fair point and has different assets in terms of the specific sound! This technique above has greatly improved my belting and interestingly it really feels like I suck air in at the same time as letting it out. My voice can get higher and deeper with more resonance and more effortless so I’d say I don’t care if the new Science is proving this to be not true as long I can hear and feel a difference myself especially when my voice is much more durable for longer amounts of time and the sound produced is more to my liking.
    And also I think we should respect the old techniques they have been created by hundreds of years trying and error and I’m sure they produced incredible singers who worked without using microphones for years. But I also think it is amazing that we can use so many new techniques for different sounds to choose from a buffet of sound quality to make us unique and individual! In dance you can say ballet is the greatest technique but jazz and hip hop and tango and waltz are also great it just depends on your taste and maybe also on your own needs and emotions... I love this masterclass

    1. when we run out of breath , the body automatically pulls air out of the atmosphere in to the lungs
    2. But dont run out if possible and pull short amount of air from time to time; keep lungs refueled with the fresh air you just took with the air taken before
    3. vocals are best when performed with average air capacity. if you inhale a lot , it will put strain on everything

    I mean I feel like I get what he’s saying. To me he is explaining singing into the mask. You direct the air into the nasal passages. Your soft palate lowers a little and you get the resonance up and into the nose . I also sick my air the ping on the soft palate but also behind it and into the mask area. I guess you can say it’s like your inhaling because the air isn’t only being directed out rn mouth . Yeah if I were to put my hand infront of my mouth there isn’t much air compared to the volume etc.
    For me the air feels like it’s directed back, behind and up then forward, all at once. In other words it’s going up behind the soft palate and partly into the nose. It creates the brighter tone as opposed to a darker totally raised soft palate tone with zero nasal cavity airflow.
    I just think he’s describing it in a way that seems impossible. Though apparently someone in the comments claimed to be a student of his or someone else and that bel canto singers can literally sing for minutes off of one stream of breath?
    Certainly though if you direct your air to the hard palate around your teeth the sound is brash and clumsy but up into the nasal passage it’s a smoother. I’m assuming this is what he means. And the higher the notes the more it feels like the air is Straight up the back of my mouth and just towards the ceiling.
    Sometimes it’s like I’m singing back intone back of my mouth. And the more back I go the louder I get actually.

  • @smpzpirate
    @smpzpirate 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can I just suggest that's what is really happening here is essentially a conscious lift of the soft palate and a regulation of the air rather than a push or air - more of a hold back of the air which is in fact the proper function of support muscles after all.
    Yes, it's a willed action for sure and this may work for some as a thought but it's certainly not the physical process taking place. An interesting take on voice production.

      InHocSigno Anthony Smith I will explain what this stupid video is trying to get you to do.
      The whole purpose of the inhale is to expand the vocal tract. Our natural body works like this: when we exhale, or throat gets tighter and tighter. When we inhale in a correct way, the opposite happens, the throat expands and expands. The whole purpose of the inhale is to inhale by not engaging the abs accidentally or else the throat can’t expand so well. On the correct inhale, the belly expands. You can practice by exhaling out all the air in your body. Really push all the air out so there’s no air in your body. Then simply relax. Let go. Your belly will then keep inflating and inflating. Your throat will expand. Good. You did it correctly.
      Now, it must be clear that in the transition from inhale to exhale that there is 0 pause or holding of the breath. 0. Not even a millisecond. Right as you begin exhaling, keep the expansion from the inhale going for a short period of time, then simply keep exhaling while holding this expansion out. Don’t let the belly pull in. Just keep the expansion as you inhale. If you did it right, the belly and back ribs hold in antagonistic balance as you exhale, and because you hold it, the throat stays expanded. To truly sing opera you have to inhale as big as you can, but you MUST MUST MUST learn to inhale without accidentally gripping the abs. You know you’re doing it right when you feel the throat expand and expand without every clenching. You may even focus on the throat expanding to take your mind off of trying to inhale correctly, because it’s very easy to mess up the inhale when you try to do it, because it’s easy to accidentally engage the abs when you try to inhale big. Again, the exercise listed above when you exhale out all the air in your body, then let go and let the belly naturally puff out big and full will help give you a feeling of what that is like. When the throat is free you need very little air to actually sing because you’re no longer having to force air trough a tight throat. Instead, you need to hold the expansion. You know you’re using the right amount of air and right speed of air for the note if your throat does not clench or squeeze up. It should not clench even a tiny bit if you want to be a true master. This is why you keep the inhale expansion continuing for a fraction of a second after you start exhaling, then keep the hold as you exhale. To sing higher, you have to hold harder so that you actually exhale LESS air when you sing higher, not more. Lower notes actually need more air than higher notes.

    Thanks for the devoted explanation. I am still not very sure about combinig the "2 rivers" at the same time really physically. How can you let the breath out of your lungs while singing (1st river) and inhale air through your mouth (2nd river) physically? If you inhale air through your mouth, you need to use your lungs. And if you inhale, the lungs must expand. But if you sing at the same time, your lungs must compress. And this is the problem: the lungs cannot expand and compress at the same time, I believe. So if my understanding correct, the inhaling of the voice is a metaphor which works? Or not? Thanks for clarification

    • @TheStarviking
      @TheStarviking 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dusan Patroch The way I can explain it - As you sing, you feel air moving from your lungs towards your mouth area, but with Bel Canto you need to also feel the air move into your sinus passageway. Try to do this without vocalising too much, I'm singing on an "ahh" as the Ave Maria - and singing really softly - focusing on feeling the breath move up into the sinus passageway. Once you have felt that and feel you've mastered it - increase volume and keep working at it. The volume increase while performing is incredible - and has no strain on the vocals at all. I have a major throat injury but with Bel Canto method I am able to sing. www . reverbnation . com / sandybigara there are the Ave and Panis Angelicus sung with vocal/neck injury all thanks to this method!

      Sandy Bigara Dear Sandra, many thanks for your great explanation! Can you recommend an exercise or a method for developing natural vibrato? So far the vibrato doesn't really come (after 3 years of singing lessons). Many thanks!

    • @TheStarviking
      @TheStarviking 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dusan Patroch I sang in choirs for almost 15 years with a very clean pure sound (almost no vibrato) so it did com naturally to me. How my teacher taught me: if you can listen to someone with good vibrato - Pavarotti is a good example of a 'large' vibrato, and try to mimic the sound you hear. I started with a very overly produced vibrato - draw a line in the air across in front of you, and sing that 'line' then start to wave your finger up and down, drawing a 'wiggle' across, get your voice to move with your finger. Once you get that feeling and confidence, try tighten or refine your vibrato until it is the sound that you want (Andrea Bocelli is a great voice to mimic until you get your own natural vibrato. It's hard to explain in type sorry. Hope I've made sense.

    • @dusanpatroch1395
      @dusanpatroch1395 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sandy Bigara Dear Sandra, thanks for the exercise, the vibrato exercises are always amusing :-) Actually, it seems I started to vibrate naturally when the air from lungs goes also to the sinus passageway and the voice is no longer so low. I have been doing it for about 2 weeks and I have the impression that something is going on. You sing very well, I wish I sing one day like you, I mean as a man :-)

    Hi Mr Trondeau!!! You say that when singing, the exhalation of the air follows the nasal cavity to his holes, because you're inhaling air by the mouth. Ok. What about sound, musical vibrations? It's not very clear for me. May be my english is not so good or something else. From today thank you so much for your videos, i don't recognize my singing within about one week

      Onset exercises. Short staccato vowels prefaced with a half h impulse (ha ha ha); just think of a hearty laugh but supported with the breath. You are not literally 'inhaling the voice' but you will develop the sense you are singing on the 'gesture of inhalation'.

      Worms Hip Hop Anthony Smith I will explain what this stupid video is trying to get you to do.
      The whole purpose of the inhale is to expand the vocal tract. Our natural body works like this: when we exhale, or throat gets tighter and tighter. It's a good technique but the air doesn't escape through the nose. Try this inhalation of the voice technique and squeeze your nose. The voice isn't inhitied in the slightest therefore the air DOESN'T escape through the nose.

      Hi Andrew--I studied bel canto under Edward L. Johnson and yes you do literally exhale through your nose. The voice sound is created by sucking the voice into the mouth by sucking in air. The air exhales through the nose. This system is continuously inhaling through the mouth and exhaling through the nose. The swirling confluence of breath creates a brilliant sound. Singer trained in bel canto can singer for several minutes due to the inhaled air replenishing the air in the lungs that has exhaled through the nose. I have sang like this for ten years and other bel canto singers have sang like this. It is 100% correct and done as described in this video. James

    if you don't sing while inhaling air, you will NEVER achieve to sing like the belcanto ones singers. (and I am not talking about fame) . Only in high notes (head voice) you will feel the inhaling. The amount of air you need before singing is minimal. And yes, you need to keep your dyaphragm low as you sing inhaling air, because if you let it go up, you will probably choke. Think about that, if you sing inhaling air, literally, and sound comes out super loud and full, then it is possible to breath in and sing, and its because the voice is coming out your skull (and silent air out of your nose).
    I't the only way to sing high notes with utter ease, and no, its not choking. You choke if you are doing it 100% wrong.

    Unfortunately, this fellow never learned the actual physiology of singing. As a matter of technique, his idea that a singer should not "push" is certainly great advice. But any singer that keeps the velum open to let air through the nose is singing very poorly and certainly cannot sing with resonance. The idea that resonance is created in the nasal cavities is also completely incorrect--the nasal sinuses are breath wasters and sound deadeners. Singers FEEL resonance in the head and the teeth and so forth because these structures vibrate when good resonance is produced by other means--in other words, they resonATE but they do no create resonANCE that the audience hears. The illusion of "inhaling your voice" while phonating is I suppose a feeling that one can imagine when several aspects of good classical technique "click": skills like tilting the larynx, retracting the false vocal folds, properly breath management, and learning to vibrate the thin outer membrane of the true vocal folds when in the higher half of one's range.

      Jonathan--You have a profound lack of knowledge about bel canto and Inhalare (Inalare) La Voce or Inhaling Your Voice. Sound is indeed created by sucking the voice into the mouth and air does indeed exhale through the nose...listen to bel canto singers and you will clearly hear the brilliant sound produced. The bel canto technique is taught all over the world and produces magnificent singers so I am disgusted that you would insult Edward L. Johnson for sharing this amazing way of singing. Your post is purely ignorant and insulting and should be removed from this site. You sould meet a true bel canto singer and hear the beautiful and brilliant sound that is produced by Inhalare (Inalare) La Voce or Inhaling Your Voice. In fact, here is a link to an 11 year old girl singing with bel canto as describe in this video--th-cam.com/video/hZ2TgoWIjTo/w-d-xo.html. This proves your words are tainted and fasle!

      James LePage No. The velum is closed during vowels. No air is inhaled. This has been shown empirically as far back as Vennard. The vast majority of resonance is created in the vocal tract, not the nasal cavity. See Sundberg, Titze, and others. Any singer, bel canto or otherwise can plug the nose and the sound will not stop. All you have to do is watch the pattern of inhalation. Watch Bartoli...There is no reverse breathing. IF you are speaking the idea of singing on the GESTURE of inhalation, then yes that is true. A bel canto singer will use less airflow. All you need to prove this is a straw. It is easy to regulate airflow through the mouth. This man may believe what he is saying is true, but it isn’t. The CONCEPT of sucking the sound is absolutely true, but that is NOT physiologically what is happening. It is not possible. This is imagery.
