Plastic also doesn't bend. the thread on my M-49 facepiece hose is bent to the point that I cannot thread the canister on to it.
That's a good reason too. Plastic might break more easily, but it won't deform (unless you throw it in a fire, but this type of plastic should have chemical and heat resistant properties).

How do you make your masks so shiny?
Nothing special, I wash them with water and soap and then I keep them stored in their bags.
