  • Thanks for tuning into episode #5 of Michigan Steel! One thing we have always heard from the grapevine is that these Midwest steelhead are not real steelhead. We always wanted to take a trip over there and find out for ourselves. In this last episode of the series, we take ONLY NW tactics and put them to the test on this awesome little river. Be sure to watch til the end to find out our opinion on whether these are true steelhead or not.

      They are real lol I live in ohio and have fished the great lakes for steelhead from Michigan to New York they migrate from the lakes up the creeks and river and then back to the lakes the reason they stock is because the reproduction numbers are not what they should be

      Ha ha - Reality: You might have to “import” them back to the Northwest someday from the Great Lakes, at the rate your going out there. Was in Seattle area during “the dome” - it was 111 degrees where I was. Steelies and Salmon are in deep trouble, my friend.

    The Great Lakes are oceans, and you would only think they weren’t if you haven’t seen them. IMO they are real, and so are our salmon.

      Great Lakes has better fishing then we do now in the Pacific Northwest. Between wild fish groups, states closing or cutting release of hatchery fish. Then we have heavy predation on smolts and adult fish. Then foreign countries netting our fish on the ocean. Plus Canada harvesting way too many of our fish. Our fisheries are doomed if things don't change.

    Rainbows remain in a river or lake, from my understanding they become steelhead due to diet change after migrating and hitting the lake or ocean allowing for heavier feeding and superior growth. A rainbow that stays in the river will not grow to nearly the size of the migrating steelhead.

    Oncorhyncus mykiss landlocked version is a rainbow trout they go to ocean and feed come back as a steelhead to spawn. You can see in their scales under a microscope and see how many times they go to ocean and come back as they look like rings on a tree and cam see how many years they spent in each at both times I've never seen a scale sample from a Midwest fish that's gone to the great lakes to feed as like I'd love to

Michigan's steelhead record is 26.5 lbs. The King salmon (Chinook) run this year looking like it may have some real tanks in it as well. Michigan's king record is 48.06 yiks. See you in late summer

    An amazing mini series was very enjoyable to watch. In my opinion I think the fish from the great lakes are indeed steelhead. if you trace their ancestry those fish came from the PNW and have overcome the struggles there and thrived. This trip was one for the books for you guys. Would absolutely love to see more great lakes salmon/steelhead trips in the future.

    Here's the real deal - Steelhead and rainbow trout are essentially the same species of fish. Steelhead is the name given to the silver ocean going form of this species. This species is native to the western U.S. where steelhead inhabit the coastal waters and rainbow trout live in rivers, streams, and lakes. Lake Michigan steelhead live a life that is very similar to that of their ocean going relatives. There are three programs that started steelhead in the great lakes. Wisconsin’s steelhead program began in 1884 but the program didn’t really get established until 1963. Twenty years later, Wisconsin decided on three strains of the steelhead to stock, which have since thrived in natural reproduction. The strains include the Ganaraska, Skamania, and Chambers strains. The Ganaraska River winter-run strain of steelhead originated on the west coast and has since become naturalized in Lake Ontario. It uses the Ganaraska River on the north shore of the lake for spawning. Although referred to as a spring run fish in Ontario, the Ganaraskas stocked in Lake Michigan also contribute to the fall and winter stream fishery. The Skamania strain was developed at the Skamania hatchery in the state of Washington, and the Chambers Creek strain from Lake Ontario in New York. The Chambers Creek strain originated at Washington’s South Tacoma Hatchery. Indiana began its steelhead initiative in 1889, with the first planting in the St. Joseph River. In 1971, Indiana began to experiment with a Wisconsin Skamania strain, and that program finally began to show some promise. The State of Michigan's steelhead program also has a long history with steelhead that began in 1876 and has been revised along the way for the last 120 years. The program started in the late 1800s included both releasing wild fish into the AuSable River with fish from Oregon, and breeding them in a hatchery. The steelhead were planted in various tributaries throughout the state. Studies show that the descendants of steelhead released into the waters in the 1880s have evolved and thrived. So when you catch all these fish throughout the Great Lakes, know that they ALL have their FIRST origins from Washington and Oregon.

    Really simple formula for anyone confused about a “real steelhead”... did it taste saltwater? That and only that factor matters, but enjoy your conversations and conjuring theories and answers to fit the definition. Simple stuff guys it’s biology 101, sorry! 🤷‍♂️

    • @okpil22
      @okpil22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's no cookie cutter definition though, since there is no governing concrete documentation on what is and is not a Steelhead. Basically it comes down to whether or not you consider anadromous and potadromous fish to be equal, especially when the original potadromous fish came from the offspring of the anadromous fish moved from the PNW to the Great Lakes. As someone who has caught both, I can say pound for pound, they fight just as hard, they look very similar with a few differences, and they act extremely similar. I would say the main difference is the taste due to diet differences

    • @chrispeabody8693
      @chrispeabody8693 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@okpil22 I guess taste could differ not only from diet but water temps as well. Here in the Midwest our water is significantly more warm than west coast. Tons of our river systems reach 70°f and even more so some hit the 80-90°f mark

      That’s like saying someone that is 1/4 or 1/2 native, isn’t a real native. But the genes are real. Biology 101 would say the genes are real steelhead. And so are their chinook and coho.

    • @ThePorpoisepower
      @ThePorpoisepower 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like it or not steelhead are still, Oncorhynchus mykiss, or rainbow trout. They are bigger and behave differently than their small kin, but genetically, no different. Do they taste different? Of course their diets are different and that makes a huge difference. But farm tastes different from wild. Are Pacific Steelhead superior to Greatlakes? I'm gonna differ to people who've fished for and caught both.
      But in terms of genetics, Rainbow trout aren't native West of the Missippi (possibly West of the Rockies honestly), The Steelhead of the greatlakes are transplants from the West coast.
      "Tasting saltwater" isn't biology it's barely science, if at all. Its nothing but hearsay. I know people who eat carp, and they will frequently keep them alive a couple weeks in clean water so they can purge all the crap they get feeding in mud. Still carp, maybe better tasting, but still carp.
      Why do some Rainbows become migratory and start eating bigger chow? Maybe all it takes is the right oppurtunities, being in a tributary system, maybe the water gets to be a specific range, maybe they just see Steelhead, and get all "Me like!" and decides to join the club.
      Maybe in a few thousand years they'll develop into truely a different species. And when that happens ( maybe longer, mayber shorter) We'll see some actual genetic differences that can be used to differentuate them.
      As far as coloration goes, salmonids have chromatophores, (the cells that allow octopus/squid/cuttlefish etc) to change their appearance. Not nearly to the extent as those freaky mollusks, but enough that they will slowly change color for spawning or to better fit their environment.
      Ultimately if you take a great lakes steelhead and some how bring it to the coast, in a few months, maybe a year or two you'd never know it was a greatlakes steelhead, and if you took a pacific stealhead to the greatlakes, you'd never know it was a pacific.

    Migratory rainbow trout that use the great lakes as there ocean are steelhead and .. the strains are of west coast desent.. skamania etc. Diff forage base and environs may make the appearance diff from the west coast but i believe there steelhead. Just my 2 cents.
