I had no idea this was even happening. Thank you for the concise summary. I just got my first reptile about 2 months ago, and I'm ready to have many more years with him
Well congratulations on the first reptile and welcome to the hobby 😅 I would not pay to much mind to this situation, it’ll blow over. There’s to many things out there not giving all the correct information! It’ll be fine
No problem, thanks for watching it! It’s not the last time something like this will happen but it’s all going to be fine. Zoo Med is such a giant in this trade and do so much to protect animals and improve their care needs. We’ll be fine, causing panic with not all the right info is only going to make things worse
I mean, I'm pretty optimistic there will be other ways to provide heat and light to our pets. LED uvb lamps are my only concern, but aside from that there are still heat emitting devices, incorporating more use of natural sunlight, out door habitats for those who are able and the companies who are currently working on other kinds of uv and heat lamps. I wouldn't panic buy a bunch of uv lamps...i would use my time and resources figuring out other ways to adapt and evolve. Im building my girl a little hangout in front of my window near my desk. She'll be safely tucked in her enclosure at night and soaking up natural sun in the day. Heat emitters for winter time.
I’m not concerned because I truly feel nothing bad will happen. Neither of My local pet store never even received a notice like this either and still have plenty of stock in the stores. These heating fixtures aren’t “general service lamps” and zoomed roof the department of energy this. Europe just went through it they survived. Just make sure the window can open because UVB doesn’t pass through glass windows if your trying to capitalize on the uvb rays from the sun!
Someone yanked all the bulbs from the local PetSmart. I needed one too. I at least managed a grocery store department during 2020 so we got first pick. I did have a strick cap of what employees could get before customers got a chance (enough for their household only basically)
I’m sorry to here that, that’s unfortunate! I spoke with my local pet stores and they are still in stock and heard these stories so they’re limiting what people can take! They never received any notices from zoo med though
I’m not sure what the solution is, especially for the heating fixtures but they’ll find one. They’re already creating LED UVB fixtures that last substantially longer the the models out now so they’ll be a long term solution in the future but for now I highly doubt they’ll ban these lights
I grew up on a farm....people use heat lamps for more than just reptiles. All young fowl go under heat lamps pretty much, dependent on where you live adults too, I've had them on my pigs in winter....this would be far to wide reaching to ever just stay in effect. This messes with way way too big of a voting block (I work in politics) for this to stand. I agree, I would genuinely not worry about this. I think we in the reptile hobby are so used to arbitrary laws and confiscations that don't make sense that we (understandably) get a little, "you can take my reptiles off of my cold dead body," about things sometimes. But this is how regulation works--not to mention why abolishing the Department of Energy would be a horrific idea. If in order to get someone to hear how this affects the reptile hobby we had to take it all the way to the President's desk or through the Supreme Court, the BEST case scenario is that this would stand for years and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix. Instead, it will be a couple meetings and a policy wonk with egg on his face. I understand why everyone is freaking out, but I think this one will be fine.
The situation will blow over and its currently being ironed out, people aren’t aware of the full truth and with the spreading of false info some people are going bananas 😅 (respectfully speaking of course, no shade thrown to anyone) We raise chickens and ducks and you are right, I didn’t think of that when making this but that light is essential for their survival as well! I agree that this will not stand, thanks for watching!
Uncle Joe and Big Gov telling us "free people" what we can and cannot do. I gave up the hobby due to the continuous overreach from on high. Use your vote to give them the finger in November.
I think for now they’ll keep manufacturing the fixtures out in the market now but you are correct, they’re already making LED UVB fixtures that are more energy efficient and last longer. I’m not sure how to make an energy efficient heating fixture because LED’s don’t throw off much heat, but they’ll think of something for a long term solution. That’s what companies like Zoo Med do, they’re always looking for ways to improve our hobby and the animals lives!
@jaexotics LEDs are awesome from experience. Both with plants and reptiles. There's an important note with that though, pay attention to the output. The same way an LED can bleach and burn a plant it can damage scales and eyes. My solution ( I actually use Led panels with full spectrum grow light) is I take a light diffuser and mount under it. You get the same benefits without the risk of blinding your pet. You can use glass or plastic and paint thinned white paint on them to glaze them over, that helps too.
@@tammyschilling5362 the technology to provide the correct heat while being “energy efficient” is not developed and they’ve been working on a solution since before this. Heating elements just require a lot of power is all compared to other lighting elements
I think you're adorable that you don't think they will let your pets die. And that you think it's a coincidence that they just faced this in Europe. It's not a coincidence, and they will let your pets die if they can. If not today, then one day soon enough. You might fight it today, and you might win. But they will keep bringing it back. And here's the thing. You have to win EVERY time, because once your bulbs are gone, they are gone forever. They only have to win once.
They’re going to figure out an alternative solution, they already did with uvb lights. They won’t let animals just die because there’s a whole other mess coming their way. It’s not a coincidence because those light bulbs also did not meat 45 lumens per watt. We’ve won before and we will continue to. Even farmers use the bulbs for raising young poultry. It’s not happening
They banned those bulbs for home lighting in the U.K. years ago, and they just put exceptions in. There is really no reason houses need to be lit with these types of bulbs, but governments aren’t willing to put their finances and food supply at risk by banning them without leaving “outs” for things like the reptile hobby, and that will likely realise that. It’s not only reptile keepers who need these lights, they are also essential for domestic food supply, as they’re used for growing chickens and in some indoor farming. It won’t only be the reptile hobby challenging this, but also massive lobbying groups and companies in the industrial farming industry.
@@trala8911 yes exactly and well put! There really isn’t a need for homes to be lit by those bulbs because there so many other led options that are a far better product with better lighting results!

Great video Josh 👍
Hey what’s going on man?! Thanks for that I appreciate it 👍🏼
I wonder if they could make them solor powered. Granted it wouldnt help all. But it would cut some of the cost down.

Just an fyi it's only the coil UVBs on the list not t5s so they can go! 😂
Got a pallet myself
I actually low key ordered a truckload as well

This is actually a good thing because it allows new development in the market and advancements in tech for better reptile keeping.

no, it doesn't "allow new development in the market and advancements in tech". There is already nothing stopping that. It just takes away an option.

People need to learn to buck. Just ball the letter up, throw it away and carry on.
