Well done! This video was very educational, well spoken, and loaded with GREAT information. Looking forward to seeing more reptile product and husbandry discussions!
very easy to understand and loved the diagram demonstrating the differences in uv exposure the further away from the bulb u go, simple but extremely effective. Well done :)
Great job on the videos. You are spot on. Very well done. Would be nice to cover some of the commonly used bulb types , such as t5/t8, spiral bulb, HID, MVB. They all have dos and donts and some in general are unsuitable for certaint species, although marketing teams let you think differently.
Thank you! I have done another video on UVB available in my heating and lighting playlist where I talk a little bit about bulb types, though I am planning on making a more in-depth video about it. I am yet to try metal halides or MVB bulbs, so it might be a while before that video is ready!
Hi Joseph--very informative video! You said you're using two reptisun 10.0 compact bulbs for two of your female leopard geckos. Just to clarify, are you using two bulbs for one tank? Also, are they on top of the mesh screen or inside the tank?
Hi, I have just purchased a 15 watt 2.0 uvb from exo terra. The bulb is pure white and I see no shades of violet. I have read that you can test it by holding a white sheet of paper beneath the bulb in order to pick up whether it is emitting uv. But I am not able to notice anything, could this be because it is only a 2.0? Or is it defective? Hope to hear from you shortly, thank you.
I have a 10.0 mini compact for my 10 gallon tank, I have a baby/juvenile beardie inside. Is this fine for now? I’m looking to upgrade when he gets older
Unfortunately not, no. The enclosure is vastly too small for the dragon, and the UV it’ll be receiving will be far too low for proper D3 synthesis. (I bet that the dragon sits under the lamp all day, does it not?) I have a video about dragon heating and lighting which I will link below, but note that I intend to update this video in the coming months. th-cam.com/video/Ax7j6SEthK4/w-d-xo.html
The video was super useful, Joseph. What do you think about exo Terra 10.0 on a compact top at around 40 cms away from my leopard gecko? Thanks in advance
I haven’t ever used Exo Terra UV lamps, so unfortunately I cannot comment with any certainty. HOWEVER, I know that the ET compacts are the funny spiral bulbs which send much of their radiation inwards, ie wasting it, so they are probably (again, I’m not certain) not very intense with regards UVB to start with. At 40cms away with a mesh there also, the UV index could be very low indeed where the gecko resides. The number one thing I’d recommend is getting a Solarmeter 6.5 and finding out for certain. Failing that, try and find out if anyone with a Solarmeter has the same rig as you and can provide you with the UV index at several distances vertically below the lamp. This is the only way that you can get the info you need, really!
So I have a 40 gallon mesh top tank. Not sure if I should put the reptison 10.0 t5 uvb linear bulb with hood on top of the mesh or is it okay to be on top of the tank? And it does run across the whole tank. I know having mesh does stop some of the uvb but I don’t know if it’s so significant that I should put it inside of the tank. Thank you.
I literally just want someone to tell me how far away I should hang this reptisun 10.0 mini compact fluorescent bulb away from my Russian tortoise. I switched over from the curly bulb cause i was told they are bad for him, but I can't for the love of reptiles find this seemingly simple answer...is there any link where it shows how far to hang them? there is no screen. Nothing between him and the bulb. I found out his ferfussun zone is 3, but the zoo med reptile lighting guide, doesn't talk about zone or types of animals. it just give a range on the 10.0 mini as between 5 - 8 inches... I guess I'll hang it 8 inches above him since there's no screen.
Great video video I have a question though so I’m looking into getting a UVB bulb for my leopard gecko I have a bio active tank I’m just trying to take care of Mom😡 the best I can all my reptiles have been pushing the limits to like take care of them as much natural as possible so what would you and know you said like you said you can’t really recommend but I know I’m just gonna ask is a 5.0 good if it’s going through mash but he does have like a log that he climbs up here to be about like 8 inches from the UVB bulb if he climbs on top of the log would that work or no
I thought leopard geckos were nocturnal and mostly are active at night? They shouldn't need any kind of UV or any day lightghing? Just a dim light that mimics moonlight and for viewing?
I have a leopard gecko with possible uv burns. I leave the light on when the the sun rises, and turn it off when it sets. My temperatures are perfect. I just recently added the UV light so I was wondering if the bulb I got was too strong or I am leaving it on too long. I used the Exo Terra® Repti Glo Tropical Terrarium Lamp - UVB 100 which is the 13w 5.0. Please respond. I really need some advice.
I think its just too strong for your tank, idk how high it is. How higher your tank, the higher you need the uvb percentage... i advice to use a 2,0 uvb for a leopard gecko, because the tank is normally not really high. (note : i am not a exotic vet, if you don't trust me, please see a licensed vet or breeder. This is just my experience...)
What zone would a Armadillo lizard be in? I'm thinking zone 3 or 4. I'm a beginner trying to sus out proper lighting, if anyone could give me advice I'd appreciate it.
Taking better care of reptiles than yourself. So weird. (Your skin is a bit light.) I mean, it's something that I think every reptile person isn't aware of.
A 40 gallon tank isn’t big enough for a dragon by a significant margin: the only thing you’ll ever hear me saying you need for a 40 gallon dragon enclosure is a bigger enclosure! After that has been sorted, the question then becomes what you need for it. If you were to look on my channel, you would find a good number of videos discussing in detail most aspects of heating and lighting for reptiles including a video all about dragon heating and lighting, an updated version of which is currently in peer review.
Everyone has told me to get rid of my Mega-Ray Mercury Vapor bulb and Ceramic Heat Emitter for my Bearded Dragon. They all told my to get an Arcadia ProT5 24" 12% UVB kit. Which I did. Was I stupid to listen? My enclosure is a ReptiZoo 50-gallon with front doors and vented side panels. I think I'm completely lost now trying to listen to everyone else.

Those solar meters are so handy. I use mine all of the time
They’re expensive, but an essential item in the reptile keeper’s arsenal.
How much are they? Mine was given to me brand new by reptile systems
About £200 brand new I think.

Yes, two bulbs over the one enclosure. They are above the mesh. The lamps were about 30cm away from the lizards.
👍

Years ago, people say these coil bulbs are bad for reptile eyes. Is that still the case?
I was told to use a 13w 10.0 coil bulb in a 3ft viv for my bearded dragon in the centre. Is that right or do I need different lighting?
You will definitely want different lighting. My video about heating and lighting for dragons is here - th-cam.com/video/Ax7j6SEthK4/w-d-xo.html

What about zillas slimline 50 uvb t8 bulb, is it safe for dragons?

Not at all. They will bask as a habit once used to having the option, that is assuming the basking arrangement is suitable.
They are crepuscular not nocturnal
