Inspite of this being a very old video, it saved my day today. I tried to install a liftmaster 8500 on a reverse would low head door. I was totally ignorant that it wouldn't work. I saw your video this morning and proceeded install it backwards attaching it perfectly in the horizontal position. It woks great. Quiet. Powerful. Perfect. THANKS>>>>
Haha I almost forgot about this video, thanks for the comment. I actually sold that house a while back, but even after all these year, I know that improvised setup is still in operation! Its crazy to me they still haven't updated this product to support reverse wound doors.
For sure. Why not be able to buy a 8500R (reversed)? I had a door technician tell me its only a matter of flipping two wire on the circuit board to get the motor top run backwards. It seems to be an untapped market. @@GimpyMR2
+dwalls533 I was able to defeat it with a 1k ohm 1/4 watt resistor. I just bent it into a U shape and jumped the connector. Cue garage door people yelling at us not to do it :)
Yes the photo eye safety does work. I should post a update but I had some trouble with cable tension on the opener side. Ended up installing snubbers to keep it taught.
like opener. it,s a very good opener . you like it a lot. who install your door did it wrong cable incorrect on the drum. your will not last very long. and be problem,s
Yes these are grat openers. But no it will not fail prematurely. This is a head door with a double track for the upper panel. The reverse wind is how they must be installed and the only way a door will work on a low ceiling. It should not affect the longevity of the opener, as long as the door is balanced and the shaft is straight and truly horizontal.

Great tip. I just did the same thing on a Genie side shaft opener.
How the hell do we know of ours is reverse wound?
Thanks for video....what type of resisters or size did you use on that again in place of the cable tension sensor???

so do the photo eyes reverse the door when the beam is broken on the way down?
